We know it's "lovely and unusual".

Grin my favourite book in the world. The Hitchcock film is pretty special too.

I think she was a Naomi

OP posts:
Tanith · 21/02/2021 23:12

The narrator is surprised when Maxim has spelled her name correctly, implying that it's a name that's often misspelled.

So - lovely and unusual and either more than one version, or commonly misspelled.

TartanTexan · 21/02/2021 23:21

Any relevant/tying in myths? Off top of head:

Ophelia
Imogen/Innogen
Phaedra
Ariadne/Adriana
Ariel
Angelica
Portia
Ursula
Valeria
Viola

Biffbaff · 21/02/2021 23:22

Naomi is a horrible name.

nottomgates · 21/02/2021 23:24

My guesses would be
Hermione
Eliza
Francesca
Fatima

Pollypudding · 21/02/2021 23:25

I am going to suggest Christabel which is lovely and unusual and could also be misspelled as Christabelle!
Although also loving Marguerite @honeylulu

nottomgates · 21/02/2021 23:25

Or Skyler

TartanTexan · 21/02/2021 23:27

Jeanne - sister
Angela - sister or Shakespearean variant: Angelica
Flavia - daughter - fancy that
Christiana - like son Christian’s name
Christobel

alltoomuchrightnow · 21/02/2021 23:28

Lois

TartanTexan · 21/02/2021 23:29

Two votes, Christobel - great minds :)

DanielRicciardosSmile · 21/02/2021 23:31

I always thought of her as a Hermione.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 21/02/2021 23:32

Juliette

My 12 yr old got to read it for the first time recently & I was so so envious! As she read She kept asking if her name would be revealed Grin

DogsnKids · 21/02/2021 23:32

I've always thought Lalage.

Bainne · 21/02/2021 23:37

@nottomgates

Or Skyler
Pretty unlikely for a middle-class English girl born anywhere from around 1900 to 1910?
WillowKnicks · 21/02/2021 23:40

I wonder if Du maurier had a name for her? She must have surely called her something other than Mrs de winter even if only inside her own head!

DuMaurier always referred to her as 'the girl'

I don't know why but I always imagined her name as something over the top & flowery, like Amaryllis.

Another vote for favourite book

SunscreenCentral · 21/02/2021 23:45

This is the loveliest thread I’ve seen here in a while...
I’m amused to see quite a few of the names I had on my list for first dc pop up.
My vote would be for Iseulte/Ysolde

mumwon · 21/02/2021 23:49

@SunscreenCentralscree Oh I like them & because its two ways of spelling it covers the pp comment about de Winter spelling her name right

Indeed! 😀
Incrediblehulky · 21/02/2021 23:52

This truly is one of my most favourite books. The follow up book by Susan Hill is also excellent, I was worried to read it in case it somehow spoilt Daphne's book but it's actually very good 😊

chipperfish · 21/02/2021 23:53

Balonz

Scrumbleton · 21/02/2021 23:53

Esme

LunaHeather · 21/02/2021 23:54

@Felifox

Rebecca

Ooh I didn't know about this Love Susan Hill.
Marcipex · 21/02/2021 23:57

I wonder if we’re meant to infer that she had her fathers name ie Leslie/Lesley, Hilary/Hilary, Francis/Frances, Robin/Robyn.

CharlotteRose90 · 21/02/2021 23:57

I think Penelope for some reason she sounds like a penny to me
