Has anyone else gone against the grain? If so, what did you wear?

Very much open to links/suggestions for a classy (but not white/cream) wedding dress. :)

out of all celebrity wedding dresses I have ever seen, my favourite was camilla's dress and coat combination.

So elegant, so pretty. If I ever needed to get married again, I'd wear something like that (but then if I am nearly the age she was when she got married to Charles.)

swampytiggaa · 21/02/2021 19:12

@TwoChocolateFrogs I was 5 months pregnant and that was a maternity ball gown 🙂 I hired it for £55 😂😂

Husband was quite shocked as he was expecting purple or red 🙂

Some fab frocks here.

As a previous poster has said, white wedding dresses are not really an old tradition; they originated with Queen Victoria. Before that, women treated their bride's dress as their best dress, and expected to wear it on a number of formal occasions. They also expected it - because (if they could afford it) it was good quality - to wear well - ie to last for several seasons. As late as the 1930s (I think) women were expected to wear their bridal frock to formal dinners for a whole year after the wedding. So of course it would not have been a white meringue. This is mentioned in one of the Nancy Mitford novels...*

Something like this? There's a lovely pale blue one.
Don't forget the petticoat too!

I bought a plain, white, satin empire line 'wedding' dress from Oxfam for £10. I dyed it cream, stitched fake pearls on the bodice and my mother altered the sleeves and bodice with gold appliqué as I was pregnant and expanded. I used a gold mantilla as a shawl, and dyed some white satin dance shoes cream to match with tea, and added some pearl detailing. From deciding to get married to wedding was 6 1/2 weeks. I was dressed fairly traditionally, but my point is that you can adapt something if you can't find what you want. You can find an evening or cocktail dress to suit, or find a style you like and get it dyed. Your wedding, your choice.

Wear what you like. Traditions are just peer pressure from dead people.

I wore a gorgeous pale rose gold dress, loved it!! Very simple design and sequins everywhere! 😍

Exhausteddog · 21/02/2021 19:43

My best friend got married in a tea length wedding dress in pale grey. It was fab.
Another friend had an amazing hot pink gown in a trdaitional style.

CassandrasCastle · 21/02/2021 19:43
@CassandrasCastle terrible photo as it’s before the digital age but you get the idea...
You look so beautiful and happy! That's the colour 👌
I'll have to Google Sali Hughes dress someone mentioned too for inspo.

Has anyone watched Atonement? Keira Knightley wears an amazing green silk dress at one point (manages to have energetic sex on a ladder while wearing it too; impressive as it looks so delicate...), and I basically just want it- if only I was about 6ft and rail thin. :D
I'm 5.4 and wonder about suitable lengths...

GCAcademic · 21/02/2021 19:54

@changi

GCAcademic That is a PHENOMENAL dress. Absolutely stunning.

I agree. It's gorgeous.

Did it come with castanets? Grin

Lol! It doesn't actually look that flamenco-like IRL. And I certainly don't look fit and lithe enough to be a dancer either!
Thehop · 21/02/2021 19:56

My friend wore pastel florals and it was stunning

I loved Camilla's wedding outfit too - it was fabulous.

My mum got married in ice blue. Of course, my dad's family started gonig on that mum must be pregnant because she wasn't wearing white. I turned up 2 years later, dispelling that particular rumour.

Mum always wanted a blue wedding dress, and she looked lovely in the photos.

If I ever get married (I'm 52 and counting), I think I'd go with ice blue as a nod to mum's memory. I'd like a 1950s swing dress with full circle skirt and petticoats anyway, and it would never be white/cream/ivory or any of that stuff. Ice lue with a big silver or turquoise sash/belt seems a lovely combo to me.

OP, looking at the things you've mentioned in your post, perhaps search for tea dresses, here's a couple that might kick off a search:

Tea dresses

dresses

And finally

MrsMop1964 · 21/02/2021 20:11

First time, pale blue and second time pale pink, but these were not ball gown/wedding dress type outfits.

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 21/02/2021 20:12

I had mine made- a copy of a Biba maxi dress in green moss crepe.

What’s your budget? Would you consider getting one made?

If not, what colours do you like? Slim or wide skirt? Sleeves or not?

Frozenintime · 21/02/2021 20:17

It's fine. It is a tradition that you don't have to follow. I've been to so many weddings and they all seem to be the same !

Notsureaboutmuch · 21/02/2021 20:19

Mine was midnight blue.

Cinderstella · 21/02/2021 20:31

I was married in a black velvet gown. Had heaps of compliments. My bridesmaid was in black too. It was close to Halloween so appropriate for that I suppose. We had red and cream flowers with lilac sea holly in the bouquets.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/02/2021 20:39

@CassandrasCastle

I want pictures! These all sound beautiful. I've been married once, in white.

When I get married to current DP, I really want to wear green silk (I've got ted hair)...someone find me a dress of this description please? SmileWink

I have red-hair and I wore green silk! Not a wedding-style dress, a rather lovely knee length dress from Monsoon. I've never regretted it
CKL987 · 21/02/2021 20:41

Black. Wore the same dress to my Mum's funeral. It wasn't wedding dressy like. My Mum would have appreciated that as she never understood the wear once wedding dress.

flapperdapper · 21/02/2021 20:50

Light salmon coloured

AdriannaP · 21/02/2021 20:53

I wore a light blue silk dress by Armani. Didn’t want white and loved my dress.

Mumdiva99 · 21/02/2021 20:53

@chanandlerbong01 I got married 2 years ago and that was one of the dresses I ordered. It didn't suit me but was lovely. I did wear a Roman dress....cream shift with pink flowers. The best thing was it was about £40. I haven't yet worn it again....but at that price I have no guilt about that. It was perfect for me.
