Has anyone else gone against the grain? If so, what did you wear?

Very much open to links/suggestions for a classy (but not white/cream) wedding dress. :)

These all sound wonderful!
What on earth do I need to google to find this sort of thing?

Whatever i'm searching is bringing up "normal" day dresses or OTT american style prom dresses.

What does a gal need to do to find classy, knee-length dresses that are comfortable but elegant and wedding day-worthy?

Look on Pinterest for inspiration

@CassandrasCastle I did wear green silk! I picked the pattern and the fabric and had it made up by a local dressmaker. Very slinky, with big shoulders (it was 1990). I loved it. I had tried on one or two traditional wedding dresses but looked like an utter pillock in them.

I had a blue dress. My DM was horrified to begin with and said “but how will anyone know you’re the bride?!” and I said “if anyone coming to my wedding doesn’t know that I’m the bride, perhaps they shouldn’t have been invited” 😂 She saw my point after that!

Just think of the shops you like and start there. I bought the sort of dress you would wear to a very smart dinner.

I was really tempted by a few different coloured wedding dresses, but in the end I went with an ivory ‘non traditional’ dress from Monsoon. I just loved it and felt the most confident in it. I was on a budget hence picking a Monsoon dress which I also managed to buy in the sales.

Ooh I love those dove grey ones.

Or black with red accents.

Meredithgrey1 · 21/02/2021 16:05

Mine was dark green and knee length.

Afromeg · 21/02/2021 16:06

Mine was yellow. Something like these but not quite.

Friend got married in a gorgeous peach coloured dress right before first lockdown, couple years before another friend wore silver. No need to wear white or cream these days really

SaintLucy · 21/02/2021 16:08

I really would have loved a gold dress, gold suits my skin colouring but I couldn’t find one in budget or the style I liked.

AuntieMarys · 21/02/2021 16:08

Red

SplendidSuns1000 · 21/02/2021 16:09

I wore a dark green dress from 1957. My shoes, hat with veil and jewellery were all black.

I'd say look on Pinterest, type in any key words you can think of. Check what the name of the style of dress you want is to narrow it down. Also work out what material you'd like it to be and if you want pockets!

Snowymcsnowsony · 21/02/2021 16:10

My last wedding I wore a silver wedding dress.

SomersetHamlyn · 21/02/2021 16:10

I was breastfeeding a newborn and had a short black and purple maternity/nursing dress. With two of our kids there it would have felt a bit off to wear white plus I've never, ever wanted the whole princess for a day thing.

CaptainPovey · 21/02/2021 16:11

Mine was red. Still have it. Beautiful dress

rosie39forever · 21/02/2021 16:11

I eloped to Las Vegas 22 years ago and wore a sparkly red evening gown with red crystal tiara, I still have the dress, shoes and tiara along with my dried and preserved red rose bouquet. You should wear what your happy with OP.

My first wedding i wore a dark blue velvet tunic and trousers with gold
flats and a sheer gold kimono type thing - I'm quite theatrical and it was just the job. Think about outfits you really love and feel good in. I don't think anyone has bettered Bianca Jagger's wedding outfit myself, but woukd probably go full Adam and the Ants highwayman style if I ever did it again.

Bananalanacake · 21/02/2021 16:14

Ten minutes before we had to set off for the registry office I looked in my wardrobe to choose something to wear. Settled for a pink, summery dress by Principles. It was the last thing I bought in Debenhams.

BonnieDundee · 21/02/2021 16:15

A Scottish friend wore a beautiful tartan creation. I think it had a black velvet top and the skirt.was tartan. Gorgeous it was

C152 · 21/02/2021 16:16

There's nothing wrong with not wearing a white dress. I wore a champagne coloured dress with slightly darker lace on it, that I bought from a second-hand shop. I suspect it was actually a neglige, but was exactly what I was looking for! I also had a feather wrap that was a similar colour to the lace. (Good option if you don't want to wear long sleeves or a jacket / bolero, but don't want your shoulders to be bare the whole day.)

MsVestibule · 21/02/2021 16:17

I would have loved a burgundy 'proper' wedding dress but it was just too difficult to find. I could possibly have bought one online but I hate buying clothes online so definitely wouldn't have for a wedding dress.

Why don't wedding dress shops offer more colour options? Surely I can't be the only one who wants a traditional style dress but not white/cream/ivory?

FolkyFoxFace · 21/02/2021 16:18

Mine was green lace! I had it made because I knew exactly the style I wanted and it really didn't disappoint. Definitely go for whatever makes you happy! It's important to feel great, and if that's what does it then go for it!

ReggieCat · 21/02/2021 16:21

Navy/cream polka dot 40s style for me

BookWorm45 · 21/02/2021 16:21

Gold. With a gold lace long jacket.
