Has anyone else gone against the grain? If so, what did you wear?

Very much open to links/suggestions for a classy (but not white/cream) wedding dress. :)

I expected to choose a white dress, but fell in love with this one. I expected my husband to be as surprised as I was that I hadn’t chose white, but he wasn’t at all, clearly knows me better than I do 😆

Mine was green @CassandrasCastle - made in green silk by my best friend who was a wonderful seamstress. We co-designed a wrap in stripes of patterned blue and green silks that went around it. I still love it, 23 years on. It also cost about £50 in fabric - and an unrepayable debt of gratitude to my lovely friend.

I got married just before Christmas and wore scarlet velvet
Loved it.

muddyford · 21/02/2021 17:42

Married twice and wore a beautiful white dress with large blue flowers first time and a bluebell-patterned tea dress second time. I think I preferred the first. I never ever wanted the white meringue wedding dress malarkey.

VettiyaIruken · 21/02/2021 17:42

I wore a blue skirt and top

Midlifephoenix · 21/02/2021 17:47

Mine was a cream sheath with a moss green tulle coat embroidered with flowers. The collar stood up (seamstress wired the edge), it clasped under the bust then flowed out with a small train. The sleeves were long and dipped to a point (hard to describe). Obviously bespoke and I went with the designer to choose the fabric.

If I could I'd love a dress by Lucy can't dance. I found them on Instagram, they are beautiful

MixedUpFiles · 21/02/2021 17:48

Mine was ice blue

WhatHaveIFound · 21/02/2021 17:51

I wore purple, my sister wore gold and I have friends who wore yellow, red and blue.

BritWifeinUSA · 21/02/2021 17:52

Black. We went against the grain with a lot of things on our wedding day.

Divebar2021 · 21/02/2021 17:53

I wore a Pearl grey dress with a very nipped in black jacket in black silk and a vintage style hat covered in black feathers and a black veil. I used a website called Offbeat bride for inspiration but my advice would be to stop looking for “ coloured wedding dresses “ and just look for dresses. If you’re able to wander around the designer floor of a department store you’ll see fantastic dresses that will be appropriate but won’t be marketed as “ wedding “ dresses.

I bought a black, cocktail length vintage Givenchy. The shit I got off my DM & DAunt. I rolled over & wore a white number they chose*.

Have regretted it ever since. No wedding photos up & I’d never fit into the Givenchy now.

  • Diclaimer - I’m an only & my DA has boys (& I had yet to grow a spine).

Try Temperly, Ghost, vintage or eBay.

Agree with pp - Bianca Jagger rocked the (white) suit.

harriethoyle · 21/02/2021 17:54

I didn't! I wore a one shouldered dark navy Ralph Lauren floor length gown with a fur cape and I loved it ❤ (and will wear many times again, as a Brucie Bonus!).

VinylDetective · 21/02/2021 17:54

Mine was grey and white. It was second time round and I was 46 with an adult son. I’d have looked like a loon in a white wedding dress!

Alwayswrongneverright · 21/02/2021 17:55

Have a look at monsoon and coast, they both do amazing evening gown/bridesmaid styles but in different colours

SavageBeauty73 · 21/02/2021 17:55

If I ever get remarried I want to wear a gold dress

ReleaseTheCracken · 21/02/2021 17:56

Mine was gold.

WilsonMilson · 21/02/2021 17:57

I went for the massive ivory gown, pomp and ceremony for my first wedding, it cost around £2k and has never seen the light of day again since it was boxed.

Wore a green dress I got for £20 from Mango for my second wedding. Have worn it several times since too. Also am in an infinity happier marriage.

PixiKitKat · 21/02/2021 18:00

Mine isn't here yet but it will be pink, white and grey. I found it on Etsy and it will made to my measurements :)

GameSetMatch · 21/02/2021 18:01

I’ve seen a lovely pink one recently, I’ll see if I can retrieve the picture...

Mine will be scarlet with black roses.

Changeythenamey · 21/02/2021 18:05

A friend had a red one that was fab. Sali Hughes had a fabulous green one for her wedding a couple of years ago. It was awesome!

BigFatLiar · 21/02/2021 18:06

My mum's wedding dress was in a box in the loft. Surprisingly it fitted me and I'd always thought it looked lovely in their photos so I had it cleaned and wore it. Fifties full skirt, mid calf, white, so cost me nothing (other than the cleaning for the dress and petticoat).

OchreBlue · 21/02/2021 18:07

Mine was dark green

Girlwithkaleidoscopehair · 21/02/2021 18:11

I wore magenta pink. Issey Miyake Pleats Please jacket and dress. Its even machine washable and I will wear it for decades. So glad as it was definitely 'special' but will have a life. The lady who sold me my magenta Chie Mihara shoes event sent me a wedding card as she thought they would be ACE (they were)
