Has anyone else gone against the grain? If so, what did you wear?

Very much open to links/suggestions for a classy (but not white/cream) wedding dress. :)

I'm also considering not wearing white because I haven't been able to find one I like, and our reception is just in a restaurant so a proper gown seems a bit much. I'm thinking about the attached but then if I get a £50 asos one there's a minor danger of a guest turning up in the same...

@GCAcademic That is a PHENOMENAL dress. Absolutely stunning.

@RaidersoftheLostAardvark

Try the Outnet - huge selection of designer dresses, knee length or floor length. I'm not even engaged but I love browsing the gowns on there!
This is what my sister did and found the most stunning Vivienne Westwood evening gown which looked amazing. It was obviously expensive for an evening dress but very reasonably priced compared to a lot of wedding dresses and it’s something she can wear again.

I wanted to get married in an emerald/kelly green dress. I was talked out of it because "it's your wedding day, you never get a chance to wear a wedding dress again, but you can always wear a green dress". It wasn't untrue. I went for two (off) white wedding dresses. One short for the registers office, one long for the church (abroad). Neither princessy though!

All the wedding dress makes made brides made/cocktail/ball gowns. Often they come in many different colours and there's lots of styles. Pronovias would be where I started. But go on Pinterest and you'll find thousands!!

That's gorgeous.

You can ask guests not to wear any yellows or browns (or bright red). Then whatever they wear, you'll stand out as being in something different aka the bride.

I'd word it as "the bridal colours may not be traditional so please avoid X colours". Anybody who doesn't avoid them is a dick. 😉

Mint green silk dress for me too.

Regular wedding dress colours made me feel like I was pretending to be a bride. They just didn't feel like me.

IggyAce · 21/02/2021 18:25

Dh is a wedding photographer & I get excited when he says bride wore an alternative dress, it’s so refreshing after a sea of lace. One bride wore a beautiful pale pink dress one shouldered with the train going from the shoulder, it was stunning. Another had an ombré grown.

@CassandrasCastle

I want pictures! These all sound beautiful. I've been married once, in white.

When I get married to current DP, I really want to wear green silk (I've got ted hair)...someone find me a dress of this description please? SmileWink

I got married in emerald green 🙂 I’ll see if I can find a photo

@CassandrasCastle terrible photo as it’s before the digital age but you get the idea...

I wore a long black crushed velvet dress with dark red trim. I still have it which is more than can be said for the man I married. Grin

I agree. It's gorgeous.

Did it come with castanets? Grin

muddyboots · 21/02/2021 18:36

Dark pink silk with pink embroidered lace over the top. I had it made for me by a local dressmaker.

steppemum · 21/02/2021 18:40

I've been to 3 with non traditional dresses. All gorgeous. All looked very much 'the bride' as they we dressed up and the centre of attention. All suited the personality of the bride.

  1. Was a bridal gown shape (fitted bodice, sweeping out into full long skirt and train) but it was medieaval. Soft blue, with cut out leaf shapes scattered on the skirt showing a deep green underskirt, long trailing sleeves. In fact 'greenlseeves is whatsprings ot mind)
  2. crushed strawberry velvet. very fair skinned red head and the crshed velvet was so pretty on her colouring. Long straight dress.
  3. Also long straight velvet dress. can't remember the colour, dark ish red/burgundy maybe? worn with a beautiful stole over the shoulders.
Hotzenplotz · 21/02/2021 18:42

@GCAcademic

Mine was this, without the veil. It was from Maggie Sottero. My mother's cats bum face exceeded all previous renditions.
That's gorgeous!
APurpleSquirrel · 21/02/2021 18:44

Mine was coppery red - got married in November with an autumn colour scheme.

notthemum · 21/02/2021 18:44

OP.
Type into Google
Knee length silk green dress. It comes up with loads. They could all be worn for other occasions and look great. With red hair they will look amazing.

steppemum · 21/02/2021 18:48

I have to say that anyone wearing cream, pale champagne or pale gold is not really going against the grain. To me those are all within the bracket of white wedding gown.

My own wedding dress was ivory with gold embroidery. So technically really not actually white. But I would have said it fitted 'traditional bride'

I did try on a magnificant dress. Gold embroidered bodice with a HUGE, skirt in a wonderful red. I walked up and down the shop in it, just open mouthed. Mum was there and we were just wow.

But after about 5 minutes, I realised that much as I loved it, this was my one chance to wear a white wedding dress, so I decided to go for tradtitional.

My all time favourite dress though is the 'greensleeves' one I posted above, because it was so pretty and suited her so much, and so so unusual at the time. And the bride made it herself. (I would have looked really silly in it though!)

Redannie118 · 21/02/2021 18:48

I married ex DH 27 years ago aged 20 and wore a huge white dress. Hated it. Just never felt like me. When i married my now DH 8 years ago I wore a scarlet satin ballgown and i felt like the most beautiful woman in the world. Go with what you want and stuff everyone else !

Eddmr · 21/02/2021 18:50

I would wear a long coat from Shibumi if I ever got married again. www.shibumistyle.com/collections/full-length-coats

therocinante · 21/02/2021 18:52

I wore green velvet, I love it and I will wear it every winter if I get invited to something fancy!

Heyahun · 21/02/2021 18:52

Hate wedding dresses - wear what you want

TwoChocolateFrogs · 21/02/2021 18:58

I wore very pale pink silk with embroidered blush pink roses with pale mint green leaves all up one side. It was knee length, and quite 50s inspired. No hat or veil just Alba roses pinned in my hair.

It was DH's second marriage and I am a bit of a mucking-ouyt-the-stables tomboy so white would have felt a little wierd for me.

I had my dress made for me. it cost circa £400.00 (18 years ago) and i got it dyed an emerald green so i could wear it to cocktail parties (until i put on 3 stone).

Mydogdoesntlisten · 21/02/2021 19:02

I love Hotchoc's dress too.
I once heard someone say don't spend loads on the dress, spend loads on the shoes as you can wear them again. Good advice, I think. Fwiw I wore a dark purple top and lilac crochet type skirt which cost next to nothing.

I love that dress! You look very regal.

pompey38 · 21/02/2021 19:04

I wore a dark brown skirt suit from Next 👍
