I just think Mulan is iconic. Currently watching the new one

The princess and the frog, moana , frozen 2 and the good dinosaur are our faves

WoolieLiberal · 24/02/2021 13:26

It’s good but not the best.

Lion King, now that’s the best Disney film in like ever, in my opinion!

I love Mulan (the cartoon) but a friend told me it was racist and I always feel a little bit guilty for enjoying it now.

Hercules is a good one, and Moana. Frozen took a while to grow on me, but I enjoy the songs.

TheBuffster · 24/02/2021 13:53

@BaggoMcoys was there any tangible reason for it being racist? I mean if it's about the Huns I totally get that, but otherwise am clueless.
Moana was accused of being racist because they made Maui bigger built. Personally, I think it's great to see that body type in a cartoon.

TheBuffster · 24/02/2021 13:54

Now the original Fantasia servant centaur.
Now THAT'S racist.

Zevia · 24/02/2021 18:11

I think Mulan was well intentioned but has some 'problematic' issues by more modern standards (that wouldn't necessarily temper my enjoyment of it).

Admittedly I'm not East Asain and haven't seen Mulan in some time but, for me, it isnt in the same league of 'offensiveness' as the aforementioned centaur, or certain characters in The Aristocrats, Peter Pan, Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp, etc.

doadeer · 24/02/2021 18:15

Live adaptation was crap I thought. Lost all humour... It was just a basic film.

I've watched Milan so many times as my son loves it.

We also love Moana, Zootropolis and Hercules. I think Meg is my favourite female character in any, epitome of sass!! Can't wait to see a live adaption of that.

doadeer · 24/02/2021 18:16

No idea why I've spelt Mulan like that 🤣

TheBuffster · 24/02/2021 20:15

I think as well Mulan must've been really important for little girls with Asian heritage. I remember loving Cinderella and Belle because they both had similar hair to me. Having a beautifully drawn character like Mulan must've been empowering for little girls at the time, despite the Americanising of the story.
She's possibly the prettiest princess, without being overtly sexy like Jasmine.
Esmeralda is gorgeous though.
And although I'd kill for Ariel's ridiculously unrealistic figure, I really like that Mulan, Esmeralda, Moana and Pocahontas have more realistic (to varying degrees) figures.

Having done a bit of online digging, I think one of the main problems with 1998 Mulan is Mushu is a small, yet sassy dragon. It's in direct contrast to the image of dragons in Chinese culture as powerful and lucky etc. Shame, because I normally can't stand Eddie Murphy but quite like his dragon performance.

Morgoth · 24/02/2021 20:42

Completely agree OP. It’s also my favourite. I think Make a Man out of you is the best Disney song too!

Changechangychange · 24/02/2021 21:43

I thought a bigger issue with Mulan were the faux-Jewish ancestors/granny.

Mushu was meant to be a bit of a failure in terms of dragon-ing - he was trying to be powerful and lucky but was actually more of a squib. He was on his last chance wasn’t he? I vaguely remember he had to help Mulan to avoid being banished as a crap dragon.

I had forgotten about Lilo and Stitch but yes it is criminally underrated and that scene where he runs off into the forest after damaging her photo always makes me cry. You don’t often see realistic depictions of child grief, but I thought it showed how damaged she was very sensitively.

I love Mulan. This YouTuber has made some great videos about things that were culturally right and wrong about Mulan (comic and live action).
They are both really good and worth a watch.

Much preferred Aladdin with Robin Williams. DH and I had a lot of laughs watching that film
