I guess to illustrate the Pixar/Disney distinction better - saying that Brave (made by Pixar studiois) is one of your favorite Disney movies is like saying Avengers Endgame (made by Marvel Studios) or Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker (made by LucasArts) is.

All are made by studios owned by the Disney Compant but, unlike Tangled, Moana, Frozen, the Lion King, the jungle book (and most other movies mentioned in this thread), they arent made by Disney Animation Studios

BrumBoo · 23/02/2021 07:42
@BrumBoo

It's Disney-Pixar. Just means that it's Disney in 3D.

No it doesnt.

Pixar was a separate company and, although it has now been acquired by Disney, it remains a separate studio, separate and apart from Disney Animation Studios.

Disney Animation Studios (who did all the traditional animated movies) now also work almost exclusively in CGI. Their biggest recent hits are Tangled, Frozen and Moana.

Most articles/listicles amount the best or worst Disney movies generally only deal with the stuff from Disney Animation Studios and exclude Pixar movies.
Disney separated from Pixar to make its own 3D pictures. No, Pixar don't make Disney Princess type films (Brave being the exception), but Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Ratatouille are all very much Disney branded/part of the Disney universe.

I don’t dare to google loin king. I imagine it would bring up some NSFW entries!

Disney separated from Pixar to make its own 3D pictures.
No it didnt. Disney Animation Studies was always a subsidiary of the Disney Company and transitioned into making 3-D films before the Disney Company acquired Pixar. Its just that they mostly weren't very good or successful movies (Chicken Little and Dinosaur being the obvious duds), although they seem to have mostly got the hang of it since Tangled.

I appreciate that Disney does indeed use Pixar characters in its branding, but Pixar and Disney Animation Studios remain entirely separate, just like Marvel Studiois, Lucasfilm and all the other studios Disney have bought out in recent years.

Admittedly Disney Studios and Pixar have more in common than other subsidiaries, but for the most part it'd be pretty easy to guess who-made-what based on stylistic creative differences.

Yes I know, that's what I said.

The Lion King, Aladdin, Dumbo, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast etc are true Disney films (as in, they were made by Disney's animation studios).

Toy Story, Brave, Finding Nemo et al are made by Pixar, a separate studio now owned by Disney, just like how the Avengers movies are made by Marvel Studios, who are another studio Disney acquired.

SEE123 · 23/02/2021 20:49

YABU, it's Basil The Great Mouse Detective.
(And another vote for Brave as a modern option)

JaquelineBeanstalk · 23/02/2021 20:55

Team Tangled here!

Aristocats and robin Hood from the early days, beauty and the beast, and pocohantas from the Renaissance.

EcoCustard · 23/02/2021 21:08

DD’s @ Ds’s favourites:
Moana
Tangled
Brave
Lady and the Tramp
Lion King
Winnie the Pooh
And Bugs Life ( Another Pixar)

My favourite is definitely Moana thought it was brilliant, funny, a lovely story.

I have fond memories of Mulan at the cinema and I am sure McDonald’s did a special edition McRib which I loved back in the day Grin

TheBuffster · 23/02/2021 21:12

Ohhh remember when McDonald's used to do tie in toys.
I desperately wanted a beauty and the beast one, but we didn't go to McDonald's enough.

wizzbangfizz · 23/02/2021 21:38

Of all the Disney films my fave new ones are;

Tangled
Frozen

Old;

Little mermaid
Sword in the stone
Robin Hood

Zevia · 23/02/2021 21:52

Well I think I'm going to have to give Brave a watch off the back of this thread. I think other than the Cars sequels and Onward it's the only Pixar I hadn't bothered with.

redastherose · 23/02/2021 22:04

Yep, Mulan is the best for me too. My Eldest DD is 26 so I've seen them all and Mulan is the best. I think Brave probably second The Emperors New Groove, Hercules and Tangled are up there too.

Changechangychange · 23/02/2021 22:13

I love Brave but I don’t think it counts as “proper” Disney. So Mulan is the best.

The Little Mermaid ruined my favourite ever fairy story. I don’t care how catchy “Under the Sea” is, Ariel is meant to find out she was never actually the Princess who he remembered rescuing him, and turn to foam at the end and wash away in the waves.

TheBuffster · 23/02/2021 22:27

I cried when I heard the original little mermaid. It's beautiful, but five year old me prefers pretty lies.

namechangetheworld · 23/02/2021 22:44

It's Tangled for me. That's the only film that I would gladly sit and watch without my children around and do on a regular basis Mulan is a close second though. The songs are fantastic (and I also really enjoy the fact that ultra manly Li Shang is voiced by Donny Osmond, of all people.) I also enjoy Frozen, every song is brilliant and I think it definitely deserves the praise it receives.

I'm suprised at the love for Brave on this thread, it was bloody tedious and took itself very seriously. It took several attempts to get all the way through and it really wasn't worth the effort. Ditto The Lion King.

Shrek blows them all out of the water though anyway!

DdraigGoch · 23/02/2021 22:45

FFS, I'm holding you lot responsible for the fact that "Be our guest" is now on loop in my head!

The Princess and the Frog was very underrated, shame really. Jungle Book must be the best though, for no other reason than that the Sherman brothers did the music.

If we're including Pixar, then Inside Out has got to be up there. It was so insightful.

MintChocAddict · 23/02/2021 22:59

Coco. The colours are amazing!

JamMakingWannaBe · 23/02/2021 23:18

Curve ball coming but Cool Runnings gets my vote! Love that film!

Unfucked · 24/02/2021 12:35

Excellent curveball @JamMakingWannaBe. One of the all-time great films, from any studio.

sheslittlebutfierce · 24/02/2021 12:50

definitely Robin Hood!!!

Of the more modern ones it has to be Brave

enchantedspleen · 24/02/2021 12:54

Lilo and Stitch forever.

Mykidhatespastabake · 24/02/2021 12:56

@WolfHunter

Moana and the new Aladdin. I love the old one but I like that in the new one Jasmine becomes the sultan.
