Moana! Mulan is quite good

EugenesAxe · 21/02/2021 19:41

I watched Brave and found it boring and not at all amazing - it's weird, given so many people love it. I should probably try it again; I think I had it on in the background, which probably means I didn't watch it directly enough to appreciate it.

I do like Mulan loads, but the film I go back to over and over is Zootropolis. Of the 'pure Disney' films, I think my favourites would be Mulan, Emperor's New Groove and Robin Hood.

I get mega niggles from the way that the Hun bloke says 'doll' in the sentence 'Besides... the littl' girl will be missing her daaaal... we should return it to her.' It spoils the film a bit.

imalmostthere · 21/02/2021 19:51

Yes yabu, because it's Aladdin, followed by Hercules, followed by hunchback 🥰

EugenesAxe · 21/02/2021 19:53

I also love Moana and Ratatouille - Jermaine Clements makes the first film and the reprise of How Far I'll Go when she meets her spirit grandma is awesome.

The best bit of Mulan is the 'prep music' when she's getting herself kitted out as a soldier. The 'bababa-bababa-baaaaaa' section gives me goose bumps.

Robin233 · 21/02/2021 20:03

Love Disney film.
1 beauty and the beast
2 little mermaid
3 Aladdin
4 the lion king
5 Hercules

Earlier
Cinderella
Sleeping beauty
Alice in wonderland
Peter Pan
Aristocats
101 Dalmatians
Snow White
Jungle Book
Dumbo
Lady and the tramp

debbrianna · 21/02/2021 20:09

Moana has to be the best Disney movie with the best message. The first disney movie where the character is not defined by being female. She is who she is. There was no expectation of male heir, no debating who she would become because she knows her role. All she needed was to learn and become the best leader. There was mo need for her to be a boy to prove her worth. There was no mention of marriage. A brave young girl willing to challenge and be challenged.

The whole relationship was just between her and the love of her people. Helped by a matriarch(grandmother) who still guides her in death. I find the film really incredible and with adult themes which needs deep thinking and exploration.

TheBuffster · 21/02/2021 20:34

@debbrianna agree Mulan has the best message/feminist credentials.
Did you know the original storyline was based on Mulan having brothers and her having to prove she was good at 'boy things' to rule?

I'm so glad they changed it as it's truly unique for a Disney Princess finding herself movie.

Also love the “If you wear a dress and have an animal sidekick, you’re a princess.” line and bantz.

TrickorTreacle · 21/02/2021 20:37

I think the Lion King was over-rated. Jungle Book is a better film imo, and even the sequel is quite good, quite different from the original too.

I like all of the fairy tale Disney films, even Snow White. Yes it's old fashioned now and isn't what you expect a woman to do. You just have to remember it was a film of its time (nearly 100 years old now!) but the animation is still gorgeous.

Now that Disney owns Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar, I think they have become too big. I preferred Disney when they were just (Walt) Disney. So that's from the 1920s up until the 2000s before they starting acquiring the other companies.

TheBuffster · 21/02/2021 20:43

Interestingly Mulan (cartoon) original storyboard had her doing badass horse riding and generally showing her to be physically very accomplished and sporty. It was scrapped for the heroine we know so her actions would be brave and not glory hunting. It's weird how the 2020 version went for this weaker idea of 'super girl' good at everything, not like other girls motif. Seems a bit regressive to me.

Oh and the original Elsa was a full on villain. But everyone knows that.

theDudesmummy · 21/02/2021 20:46

Moana for me...

littlepattilou · 21/02/2021 20:46

Nah, Mulan is not even in my top 20 fave Disney films... I find it a bit boring actually. The new (2020) one is even more tedious than the 1990s one.

@Bristolbongos YABU.

SecretNutellaFix · 21/02/2021 20:58

Mulan
Tangled
Brave
Moana
Hercules

My top 5 Disney (owned) animations.

But one of my favourite songs is "God help the outcasts" from Hunchback.
And I do love the live version of Cinderella- the ballroom scene is incredible.

debbrianna · 21/02/2021 21:04

I have only watched the old Mulan but didn't like the constant "she is a girl who will bring shame on the family" I started watching the new live action but I could not continue it. It felt lackluster.

Germolenequeen · 21/02/2021 21:08

Fantasia followed by Jungle Book

CocoPark · 21/02/2021 21:19

YABU because Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid clearly sit way above all other Disneys.

I do love Mulan though, agree it's very underrated Smile I'd put Tarzan in a similar category.

Robin233 · 22/02/2021 19:13

I'd forgotten about Tarzan.
It totally blew me away at the cinema.
Dh watched the new Mulan last and throughly enjoyed it.

Mavedrai · 22/02/2021 19:30

My favourite is Sleeping Beauty. Love the animation style, the music, the dressmaking scene. It's a close tie with Robin Hood -- I still think Foxy Robin is quite dashing. Wink

Mulan is definitely in my top five though.

Sleeping Beauty
Robin Hood
Beauty and the Beast
Mulan
Aladdin

MissMarpleDarling · 22/02/2021 19:30

Love them all but yes Mulan is great.

ForensicFlossy · 22/02/2021 22:39

The new Mulan is crap.

AJB3001 · 22/02/2021 22:46

The original one is the dogs bollocks! I bloody love it and so do my kids!

Yellownotblue · 22/02/2021 22:52

@Bristolbongos

I just think Mulan is iconic. Currently watching the new one
The leading actress in the remake came out publicly to support China in their annihilation of Hong Kong.

I stand with Hong Kong, so we’ve boycotted the film.

I encourage anyone to read about Hong Kong’s fight for democracy and civil rights before they support the Mulan remake. China is engaging in highly reprehensible acts in violation of human rights to wrestle power away from Hong Kongers. It’s nothing short of a tragedy happening before our eyes. And the whole world stands still as this is happening.

Zevia · 22/02/2021 23:05

@BrumBoo

It's Disney-Pixar. Just means that it's Disney in 3D.

No it doesnt.

Pixar was a separate company and, although it has now been acquired by Disney, it remains a separate studio, separate and apart from Disney Animation Studios.

Disney Animation Studios (who did all the traditional animated movies) now also work almost exclusively in CGI. Their biggest recent hits are Tangled, Frozen and Moana.

Most articles/listicles amount the best or worst Disney movies generally only deal with the stuff from Disney Animation Studios and exclude Pixar movies.

Zevia · 22/02/2021 23:06

Oh and my favorite Disneys are The Lion King, Aladin and Moana.

For Pixar it's probably Ratatouille Grin

babyinthacorner · 22/02/2021 23:15

Another vote for Moana here. Closely followed by Tangled.
And I’ll go against the grain and say I also love Frozen!

Anthilda · 22/02/2021 23:15

My top 5
Lion king
Beauty and the beast
Cinderella
Pocahontas
Lady and the tramp

My children's faves
Cars
Planes
Aristocats
Frozen
101 dalmatians
