To think that the sex of cats is not on a spectrum?

Just saw this comment in the comments section of Times Article today talking about Play for Women taking taking the ONS to court for redefining sex in the census

Comment:
I thought that it was an exaggeration that there were extremists who denied sex. Then I went to a local meeting about the toilets in our town. Person after person stood up to say that segregating them by sex was wrong because “sex is reductive and must be replaced by gender identity”. My father - a retired vet - got chatting to one of them afterwards and asked if he knew humans are mammals.
“Ye-es,” he said.
“And if you were to get into breeding other mammals as pets - you would know which cat was of the sex class that could get pregnant by observing their sex organs. So you see, sex is not reductive but instead an absolute basic fundamental in the classification of mammalian life.”
His stupefying reply: “sex is a spectrum, so there would be no guarantees. In that scenario I’d buy a group of cats, leave them alone and they’d figure it out. By the way, you sound like a transphobe.”

AIBU To think that the sex of cats is not on a spectrum?

For those who think that this discussion is erasing trans people... is it only the discussion about sex vs gender in humans?

Or are people invalidating trans people also by discussing biological sex of cats?

334bu · 20/02/2021 11:08

My cat believes in a spectrum with him at the top and me at the bottom.

Thewithesarehere · 20/02/2021 11:09

@334bu

I told my cat they were on a spectrum. They ignored me. I told my cat they could identify as they wished. They ignored me. I told my cat that the tuna in the dish shouldn't be eaten as it identified as non cat food. They ignored me
Your cat sounds catshit crazy IMO.Grin
Shannon9873 · 20/02/2021 11:11

@Hepsie

Trying to erase the trans population is wrong

How is stating a biological fact erasing the trans population? Or are you saying that transpeople are only validated and real if we deny biological facts? Because they do still exist. And we know that transwomen are biological males and transmen are biological females. And that's ok. They're still there, they're not erased, you don't need to worry....

This.

Other side of the argument... someone disagreeing with you does not mean you are ‘erased’. What does that even mean? No tolerance for these pointless ‘woke’ phrases.

Again it’s hyperbole from both ends here. It’s a tool to shut down conversation on both sides.

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 20/02/2021 11:11

334bu I think it is great that you have these enlightening and respectful discussions with your cat. I am sure that your cat feels very validated.

334bu · 20/02/2021 11:13

Science deniers have always existed. The problem comes when their beliefs take over political policy and they censure all possible dissent.

kittykarate · 20/02/2021 11:14

One of my male cats was very ill last year due to a bladder blockage, the surgery to help resolve this involves removing his penis and replumbing his urethra (Perineal urethrostomy).

His lack of penis doesn't mean that feline sex is a spectrum. Or that he now has the health concerns of a female cat.

Jaxhog · 20/02/2021 11:14

Well, I have 2 cats who were formally male. I doubt the vet would have castrated them without being sure what sex they were!

For more than 95% of use, your sex is a fact.

Shannon9873 · 20/02/2021 11:15

@ErrolTheDragon

Ok, Shannon, so we agree but don't like each other's approach. 'Calm down love' and 'everything all right at home' (very much so, fwiw) are rather weird responses tbh.

If you're actually interested in women's sport, take a look at the research behind world rugby's decision to keep women's international rugby for women.

Smile yep, we don’t have to like each other! We probably do agree though

I’m Not that interested in sport and I bet most people on here aren’t either so why are so many people ‘actually furious’ (to paraphrase a PP). I saw another thread recently were a poster was practically frothing at the mouth over the same subject and they didn’t engage with sports in any way, why become upset. Live and let live, surely

Although apparently women athletes are out there dying! Mass extinction of sporty women! Good lord!

334bu · 20/02/2021 11:17

I am sure that your cat feels very validated.

I asked him that but he ignored me. I must be doing something wrong.Sad

Callingallmajortoms · 20/02/2021 11:18

Honestly I don't know if cats can be trans in the sense humans are but they can definitely be gay I've had female cats who have been lesbians and there are cases of male cats mothering kittens. There's the gay penguin couple who have been hatching eggs, so I don't know if cats can be trans and suffer disphoria.

When you say formerly male, of course they haven't now become female. Mammals can't change sex, they can only be neutered. We do it to animals, but it's nearly always considered unethical to do it to humans.
Thewithesarehere · 20/02/2021 11:20

Sorry @Shannon9873 but you must show respect and ask questions before calling it all hyperbole.

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 20/02/2021 11:20

334bu, I think that your cat is stunning and brave.

If they are ignoring you on this topic, it is of course your fault. You have to educate yourself and do better!

Shannon9873 · 20/02/2021 11:21

What are thoughts on trans cats in sports? Will that result in female cat athletes dying too?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2021 11:23

I'm not particularly interested in sports. I am interested in women's and girls' rights in general. Sports is simply one of the most obvious demonstrations of the fact that humans are dimorphic, and that categorising by sex has an entirely rational basis whereas there's no good reason whatever to divide it by 'gender'.

Shannon9873 · 20/02/2021 11:23

Must I? I don’t have to show anything respect! Neither does anyone else

High opinion of yourself though, good for you

Fair comment and I don’t disagree. See this is a more measured response I can get on board with

‘bUt wOMen aThLeTtEs aRe dYiNg!!!!’ Isn’t worth my time.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2021 11:28

Quite... it was actually that response which was hyperbolic.Grin

Thewithesarehere · 20/02/2021 11:29

It’s you who is throwing the word ‘hyperbole’ around @Shannon9873.
This is a thread for discussing a sensitive issue. So instead of asking politely, you have gone the opposite way. How is that ok?

TableFlowerss · 20/02/2021 11:29

No idea about the biology of cats in general, but I suspect, like humans, those with xx/xy chromosomes will be identified at birth as male/female by the vet.

Like humans, there will be a small minority that will have a congenital condition that makes it not clear cut, but that’s rare in humans.

nothingcomestonothing · 20/02/2021 11:30

My DC eyerolled at me for ranting about that CBBC series with the mtf trans child. Until I suggested maybe Dcat isn't in fact a cat, but is really a rabbit, maybe he feels like a rabbit, then they just grasped how ridiculous the whole notion of 'identifying' is. So maybe cats are the answer...

I mean I could agree with you until I was blue in the face but you would find something to have a go at. I get it you don’t like me, that’s cool.

boysvswomen.com/#/

Shannon, if you are interested in the differences between males and females, the link above compares college boys to female Olympians.

Scroll down and you will get a break down per area. In many areas, the women wouldn’t even qualify.

This difference due to male puberty exists in most sports. I am not that interested in sports, but it is difficult enough for women to earn a living from it. They don’t need competition from biological males.
