Cat pooing in neighbours garden

So my ndn stopped my partner yesterday and mentioned that our cats are pooing in their garden a lot. When he told me I was a bit Hmm because I'm not sure what she expects me to do? I've said to my partner we'll buy some sort of cat deterrent she can put in her garden but other than that I'm not sure what I can do. My cats (2) are outdoor cats and I won't be keeping them in as they love to be out. I keep a clean litter tray for them, which they do use but no doubt they will be pooping outside too as cats do.
We don't have the only cats on the estate so potentially it's not just mine pooing in it (I assume she's seen them rather than just deciding it must be mine).
Aibu to do nothing but provide cat deteerant?

I wouldn't even so that tbh. I've seen my neighbours cat poo in my garden I wouldn't knock on his door and tell him😂

MissMarpleDarling · 18/02/2021 12:30

Do**

heart80s · 18/02/2021 12:32

I'd offer to go round and pick the cat poo up if it definitely is your cats. It's bloody annoying finding cat poo all the garden especially when you have young kids. Luckily I managed to stop cats shitting in my garden but I was annoyed every time I found one.

LST · 18/02/2021 12:37

What your suggesting is fine. There isn't really much else you can do. I suppose you could offer to go round a couple of times a week to pick it up?

LST · 18/02/2021 12:37

*you're

TaraR2020 · 18/02/2021 12:37

Ah, one of these! :) there was an almost identical thread a few weeks back which had some good responses.

I wouldn't go round and pick it up Hmm

They can get one of those frequency noise deterrents.

As you say how can they be sure its your cats?

Adancewithdragons · 18/02/2021 12:37

I hate cat poo in my garden. Why should I have to check the garden for poo when we don’t have any pets before my kids can play outside. Not sure how you even train a cat go poo in only one area or the litter tray.

Nice if you to buy a cat deterrent (I brought on myself) which seems to work.

Suzi888 · 18/02/2021 12:42

Would you mind their dog Pooping in your garden? Of course, cats wander etc but in theory it’s the same end result. Poo in your garden, it’s not nice and I wouldn’t want to have to pick it up and put it in my waste bin, so that would stink of squit too. Grin
There’s not an awful lot you can do about it though. I’d probably just give them some poo bags and say ‘use my bin’. I’ve had cats in the past, I’ve now got a dog who eats cat poo. Envy- not envy! So maybe it’s causing more issues than you think...

Alexandernevermind · 18/02/2021 12:44

Gross. Growing up we were the only home without a cat, so our tiny lawn was the communal cat toilet. Sad My dad used to try to deter the cats by having a high powered water pistol by the back door.
I have terriers now so no cat issues. Smile
Please at least make sure your cat is up to date with worming.

burritofan · 18/02/2021 12:45

Either keep your cats inside or cat-proof your fences with nets and stuff so they can go outside and shit in your garden instead. Why should your neighbour have a garden full of shit because of your decision to own pets?

Carlislemumof4 · 18/02/2021 12:46

My sympathy lies with your neighbour.

I'm a cat owner and lover. My cat is an indoor cat with a litter tray so I fully clean up and safely dispose of all her poo.

My neighbour has an outdoor cat. We have postage stamp gardens, I have four children. He watches his cat shit in our small flower beds from his kitchen window, turning a space on our private property for my children to enjoy in to a litter tray. Then watches me clean it up. Disgusting, if you're not prepared to fully clean up after your own pet don't get one.

I feel no qualms in chucking water at his cat, it's the only thing that deters her from our garden.

LST · 18/02/2021 12:47

@burritofan you can't keep a cat inside that is used to going out. Thats cruel and not everyone is able to catproof their garden. I certainly couldn't.

AllBellyandBoobs · 18/02/2021 12:50

People get so precious about this. Presumably your cats aren't pooing on their lawn but in the soil? There could be fox poo, hedgehog poo, rodent poo, all kinds of poo hanging around, which is why we wear gloves when digging about in soil. I think your suggestion is a good one and little else you can do.

Plutoh · 18/02/2021 12:52

Eurgh I'm not sure of a solution, but good for your neighbour for saying about it, it's so annoying. Thankfully not an issue where we live now, but used to have to go and check the garden everyday before letting DS out to play, so fucking annoying when you don't have pets yourself.

Hahaha88 · 18/02/2021 12:58

My cats are both rescues, who were already used to going out, I'm not going to then keep them in.
I don't disagree it's frustrating finding poo in your garden it's more that other than the deterrent what can I do? I can certainly offer to do a poop check once a week for her if she likes. But I've only ever caught mine pooping in mud/soil (like when I stupidly thought I could grow carrots in my garden!) as they like to bury it, and she has a lawn. So I'm not throughly convinced it's all from mine.
I'd fully understand her shooting then with water.

Fwiw she doesn't have kids either so no chance of them finding a poo!

Nnameechanged · 18/02/2021 13:01

I would definitely buy the deterrent as it adds up and shouldn't be at their expense.
One house where we live has multiple cats and they foul everywhere.
I hate having to pick it up, and since most of our neighbours got sick of it and paved their gardens, they seem to use our lawn more.
I think our only option is to get another big, protective dog when kids are a bit bigger, our old one chased them if they came near. But until then we're looking for something to give them a proper big scare so they stay away (sprinklers, noise deterrents, etc.), but it does add up.

TremoloGreen · 18/02/2021 13:02

I hate cats for this reason! Incredibly selfish to own and create a demand for breeding of animals that cause a nuisance to others then just shrug and say what can I do when the nuisance is pointed out to you. Ive tried various cat deterrents and none of them really work once the cat has marked your garden as their personal toilet. The best solution is probably to add spikes or something to your fences that keep the cat in. Maybe you can buy your neighbour a water pistol, but having soaked my neighbours cat several times it still comes back...

DogsSausages · 18/02/2021 13:04

Why cant you just catproof your garden so they poo in your garden instead

LST · 18/02/2021 13:05

Not selfish to rescue others unwanted neglected pets. Its an inconvenience to others. Op has said she'd offer to do a poo check. And that is literally the only other thing apart from buying deterrents she can do. Spikes are cruel. Not just cats will suffer then

SellFridges · 18/02/2021 13:05

You should at least offer something if you are sure it’s your cat. Some deterrent they can try perhaps?

Our garden is used as a toilet by all the neighbours cats and it’s very annoying having to constantly check the garden for poo before we let the kids out. And yes, it’s on the lawn not the soil.

I don’t mention to the neighbours, but it would be nice to have it acknowledged as a nuisance.

TooManyAnimals94 · 18/02/2021 13:08

This is why I would never have another cat. The one I had years ago was an indoor cat by her own choice but I hated dealing with the litter tray and I would feel so guilty if my cat was crapping on someone else's garden. Just buy them the deterrent and a water pistol.

justab0utsurviving · 18/02/2021 13:12

We had our garden re-done at the front and a giant fucking cat keeps shitting in it. I nearly vomited cleaning it up once as it was sloppy. We have bought those motion sensor deterrents now. I don't want a cat, I don't have a cat and i don't want other people's cat shit in my garden! And it was on the grass - not in the flower bed.

BadgeronaMoped · 18/02/2021 13:12

We have this problem too. It used to drive me mad but I think I've mellowed over the years, resignedly scooping up cat shit from the grass. At least the current cat tends to do it around the edges of the grass so the kids don't tread in it.

We once lived in a terraced house next door to a slightly odd lady who had at least 30 cats, all of whom used the tiny empty flowerbeds and paving slabs as their personal litter tray and none of whom were wormed Sad it was revolting. Luckily it was a rental so we only stayed for 5 months.

bluebluezoo · 18/02/2021 13:12

My neighbour is a keen gardener.

My cat loved to spend the day outside with him, chatting and playing.

Every time neighbour dug a hole and turned his back to get a plant, the cat would drop a shit in and fill it back in Blush.

Fortunately they loved the cat as much as we did so thought it funny.
