Cat pooing in neighbours garden

Hahaha88 · 18/02/2021 12:26

So my ndn stopped my partner yesterday and mentioned that our cats are pooing in their garden a lot. When he told me I was a bit Hmm because I'm not sure what she expects me to do? I've said to my partner we'll buy some sort of cat deterrent she can put in her garden but other than that I'm not sure what I can do. My cats (2) are outdoor cats and I won't be keeping them in as they love to be out. I keep a clean litter tray for them, which they do use but no doubt they will be pooping outside too as cats do.
We don't have the only cats on the estate so potentially it's not just mine pooing in it (I assume she's seen them rather than just deciding it must be mine).
Aibu to do nothing but provide cat deteerant?

We had our garden re-done at the front and a giant fucking cat keeps shitting in it. I nearly vomited cleaning it up once as it was sloppy

Giant and sloppy sounds more fox? We used to get foxes poo on our grass and it is disgusting.

Owl and bat pellets are pretty grim too.

O/p suggest they get their own cat, best way to keep neighbours cats away Grin

@TremoloGreen

I hate cats for this reason! Incredibly selfish to own and create a demand for breeding of animals that cause a nuisance to others then just shrug and say what can I do when the nuisance is pointed out to you. Ive tried various cat deterrents and none of them really work once the cat has marked your garden as their personal toilet. The best solution is probably to add spikes or something to your fences that keep the cat in. Maybe you can buy your neighbour a water pistol, but having soaked my neighbours cat several times it still comes back...
Nerf guns work well 😉

(Joke! By the way, for the professional moaners out there)

SomewhereInbetween1 · 18/02/2021 13:23

Wow I didn't know we could just shrug our shoulders and ignore the impacts our pets had on others! What a revelation!

I can't wait to tell my dog to shit on my neighbour's driveway, after all, he can't help when he gets the urge and why should I have to pick it up? I'll let my snakes free roam the gardens and see what local wildlife and pet rabbits they can snaffle, and the rats may as well be released to start a new population outside!

Ffs if you are not prepared to manage the impact your CHOICE of pet causes to others, then you are not responsible enough to have one.

The op has said she would go round, she has said she would buy deterrents. What else can she do?
Lockdownlumpy · 18/02/2021 13:28

Yep, it absolutely IS your problem, because you chose to keep a cat.
It drives me mad that people have these animals that shit all over my garden and that I have to play hunt the poo every time My kids play outside.
I got an ultrasonic repeller thing was was effective for when it was just one cat in one area. Now there are many cats and I would need many repeller things.

CaughtInTheCovid · 18/02/2021 13:28

I hate cats for this very reason. Our garden is full of every cat deterrent you can think of and they still poo in it. I scoop them over the wall into neighbours gardens with a spade (its the cats from their house I'm not just insane).

You can install cat nets that stop cats from leaving your property, so they can still roam around your garden. Best of both worlds then and at least this would actually solve the issue full stop.

We have the same problem - and its the most irritating thing to have to check our back garden every bloody morning for cat poop. We have a large dog and even that doesn't deter the neighbours cats - if anything, its gotten worse.

They poo on my vegetables / by the fruit trees...my herb garden. Anywhere they want! Fricking irritating and disgusting! This year, I will be keeping my hose to hand...

Anonmummyoftwo · 18/02/2021 13:48

Cats are roaming animals and there’s nothing anyone can do other that some sort of cat deterrent really. A good few of my neighbours have cats including myself and one neighbour complained to the council that all the cats were in his garden pooping and he was told it’s like trying to get a bird to stop shitting on your car nothing can be done really. Council worded it better lol. He threatened to leave poison out and told by a neighbour that if one of the streets cats died he wouldn’t be remaining in the street long after that. Guess who was loving the cats when work was being done in the next street over and mice invaded the street

Spinachtastegud · 18/02/2021 13:51

Bloody awful animals..and their poo is vile Shock

Tinkletwat · 18/02/2021 13:52

I think you need to work with your neighbour on this. If the 1st deterrent doesn't work then you need to pay for something else until you find something that stops YOUR pets from pooing in someone else's garden. I have shelled out around £100 in the past to try to stop this, it's unhygienic, smelly and tiresome to deal with. I have a dog and wouldn't dream of not picking up his poo.

LST · 18/02/2021 13:54

They really aren't. And I am sure your shit is pretty vile too.
Spinachtastegud · 18/02/2021 13:59

Grin my poo is vile...I agree...which is why I don't leave it in other people's gardens!!

BrownEyedBlonde · 18/02/2021 14:00

We might have a bloody good moan about finding cat shit in the garden but we wouldn’t go and tell the neighbours. If I see any cat in our garden we open the window and make a huge PSSSST type noise, also they don’t like water! We do this to deter them as we feed the birds and one neighbours cat in particular is unfortunately a very good predator! I now only have to rattle the window at her and she’s off!

If she’s absolutely sure it’s yours then offer to buy a cat deterrent and tell her she’s more than welcome to use a water pistol if she sees it actually shitting in action! You can’t keep them in (although I would love all cat owners to keep them in as much as possible during bird nesting season but that’s just my opinion and wouldn’t be a popular one with the cat community).

Candleabra · 18/02/2021 14:02

My next door neighbours have a lot of cats between them. And they shit in my garden a lot too. There are two huge piles on the lawn that I need to clear up. New from yesterday. Other cats like to use the newly cleared flowerbeds and bury theirs (even worse). I have had to resign myself to putting up with it, as the only thing that is adversely affected is my blood pressure. I've told the neighbours, they are not unsympathetic, but I get a what can I do shrug response.
Not sure where this post is going, but I feel your pain.

mummabubs · 18/02/2021 14:06

I think offering to buy them a deterrent is reasonable (even better would be for you to cat proof your garden). There are 5 cats in our cul de sac and 2 live either side of us. They constantly poo in our front garden, which I hate due to having a toddler who I need to direct away from it. I'm also pregnant and shouldn't be picking up cat poo according to nhs advice, but have no choice as they keep pooping there. We have a dog and it always strikes me as bizarre how dog owners are (rightly!) expected to clean up after our pets yet cats have a free pass to just poop where they like with no responsibility on the owner to deal with it.

Sceptre86 · 18/02/2021 14:08

You are at least attempting to do something which is good, I think you should pay for the deterrents and maybe check for poo once a week. Most cat owners just shrug their shoulders. My dh will check our garden for cat poo and remove it. I am pregnant so will avoid. We do have cat deterrents and it is bloody annoying, if I wanted to clean up cat poo I would get my own cat but I don't.

2021optimist · 18/02/2021 14:10

@Hahaha88

My cats are both rescues, who were already used to going out, I'm not going to then keep them in. I don't disagree it's frustrating finding poo in your garden it's more that other than the deterrent what can I do? I can certainly offer to do a poop check once a week for her if she likes. But I've only ever caught mine pooping in mud/soil (like when I stupidly thought I could grow carrots in my garden!) as they like to bury it, and she has a lawn. So I'm not throughly convinced it's all from mine. I'd fully understand her shooting then with water.
Fence your garden so they don't get out and poo all over someone else's garden?
emilyfrost · 18/02/2021 14:22

YABVU. Your decision to keep animals should not impact on your neighbours.

You need to cat proof your garden, and if you cannot do that you need to keep them inside. It really is that simple.

mootymoo · 18/02/2021 14:29

I can live with the neighbours cat pooing. What I can't stand is it catching birds and mice and leaving them as "gifts" for me! Yes I stroked it when it approached me, it's a beautiful cat but I think it's trying to move in (they have a newish baby in its house!). I don't understand why it's acceptable for cats to leave their owner's premises- whether that means keeping inside or cat proofing the garden

orchidsonabudget · 18/02/2021 14:35

WHAT are you all using to deter cats please? My neighbours' cats are shitting all over mine.

Hhusky · 18/02/2021 14:36

Is it definitely your cats? My ex neighbour who's an absolute idiot came shouting at my DH one day because my dogs were barking and kept his kids up all night. They definitely weren't my dogs because mine all sleep inside. Sometimes people find the nearest owner and immediately blame them. I think your offer to buy a cat deterrent is plenty.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 18/02/2021 14:42

Cats are the lazy pet owners' choice. I'd be absolutely furious if your cats were shitting in my garden and I wouldn't just shrug and get on with it. Allowing your cats to shit all over the neighbours' gardens is disgraceful. Why do you think this is ok?

saracorona · 18/02/2021 14:52

I used to have this problem, then I made a point of running at them like a screaming banshee whilst throwing the rake at them. I have found that consistency counts, in time they learnt to avoid. The neighbor commented that I really hate cats. Not true, I like cats just not in my garden.
