Cat pooing in neighbours garden

229 replies

Hahaha88 · 18/02/2021 12:26

So my ndn stopped my partner yesterday and mentioned that our cats are pooing in their garden a lot. When he told me I was a bit Hmm because I'm not sure what she expects me to do? I've said to my partner we'll buy some sort of cat deterrent she can put in her garden but other than that I'm not sure what I can do. My cats (2) are outdoor cats and I won't be keeping them in as they love to be out. I keep a clean litter tray for them, which they do use but no doubt they will be pooping outside too as cats do.
We don't have the only cats on the estate so potentially it's not just mine pooing in it (I assume she's seen them rather than just deciding it must be mine).
Aibu to do nothing but provide cat deteerant?

I bet she hates you already, so don't worry about her hating you in the future.

Jumping on the thread to ask what are the best types of cat deterrents? I have a cat poo problem and am fed up of cleaning up other peoples pets poo (and they definitely do not bury it - unless I have that joy as well to look forward to when planting Envy - they seem to love the grass).

I’ve tried those citrus sprays but they don’t work unless I need to empty a couple gallons of it over the garden every day. I’d love to be able to let my DC enjoy the garden without having to do the daily poo check!

Honestly? Nothing. Nothing works. All of the bullshit suggestions you'll get on here (citrus, pepper, lion poo...) I gave up on my little garden after i once again filled half a carrier bag despite using the pepper, spikes, super soaker and one of those sonic devices. Just accept that you will have other people's pets ruining your property. Acceptance helps. Trust me.

@CallistoSol

I always knew cat owners are entitled fuckers but had no idea about how stupid they are too. Some others comments on this thread are hilariously dumb. It does also amaze me how little retaliation there is against cats in general, considering what vile animals they are.
All cat owners? Really? Where do you find time to meet them all?

You need to chill out. You sound like a troll tbh, coming on a thread that’s asking for help and subsequently calling all cats and their owners names. Retaliate against cats? What are you even on about?

So am I to be honest when you consider how often cats negatively impact on non-cat owning neighbours. I'm surprised more people don't put out bowls of antifreeze or plant the boundaries of their gardens with Lilies! I suspect it's because most people abhor animal suffering and as annoyed as they are they wouldn't actually want to harm the cats. Long may that continue, eh cat owners who let their cats roam (do you even care about the dangers, because I would never have a pet I couldn't keep safe?!) Confused

Daisythecow34 · 22/02/2021 10:49

The fact that you're talking about 'cat retaliation' (by which I presume you mean harming the cat in some way) says far more about you than any 'entitled' cat owners.

To deliberately cause pain and suffering to a dumb animal who has no idea that it's doing anything wrong is very disturbing.

You clearly don't like cats, that's your prerogative, but they exist. So for your own sanity maybe chill out a bit...

I care which is why they are allowed out. They need to roam. They have always been allowed to, it would be cruel to keep them inside. If they get hit and killed by a car I'd prefer that than a life of them being cooped up and stressed living in a house only being able to look outside or in a pen in a garden.
VeganVeal · 22/02/2021 11:49

I have a dog and a cat, and yes picking up dog poo is a nota nice job. Luckily the cat poos elsewhere, not sure where, but at least it's one less job to worry about. Cats generally burry it, but the dog just looks at you when pushing out a pile.

Buccanarab · 22/02/2021 12:35

Cats are roaming animals and there’s nothing anyone can do other that some sort of cat deterrent really

That's such a cop out statement. Dogs, horses, rats, rabbits and all kinds of other pets are roaming animals by nature. Yet some how the owners of those animals are expected, and generally manage, to keep them from wondering all over the place.

I've never understood why people who want a cat can't walk it like dog owners do. Probably because, as a pp said, cats are the lazy owners choice of pet

I have a dog as well. So what am I?
RuledbyASD · 22/02/2021 14:23

@Adancewithdragons

I hate cat poo in my garden. Why should I have to check the garden for poo when we don’t have any pets before my kids can play outside. Not sure how you even train a cat go poo in only one area or the litter tray.

Nice if you to buy a cat deterrent (I brought on myself) which seems to work.

Do you mind me asking what cat deterrent you use please?
RuledbyASD · 22/02/2021 14:36

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

Can they be sure it is your cat?

I suggest you sellotape one of those shape forming things from a Playdoh extrusion set to the rear end of your cat then if the poo the neighbours finds is say, star-shaped you will know it is your cat.

Tip: if you change the shape each day you may be able to calculate regularity.

This reallllllllllly made me laugh!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
SqeakyHindge · 22/02/2021 15:01
@SqeakyHindge I've never known or owned a cat like your neighbours. It sounds like the devil.
sad thing is as much as not a cat lover, I would of taken the cat in as at start of lockdown they left it alone for weeks leaving just kitchen window open, then novelty cat got replaced with 'cute' puppies.

Don't know what happened to cat as NDN have been away again for months, hopefully someone has taken it in as they big cat lovers round here.

WoolieLiberal · 23/02/2021 14:12

Perhaps you could dye your cat’s food a bright colour (eg luminous purple) so that their poos are a distinctive colour. You could then offer to pick up any purple poos (but no others).Wink

Luckily the cat poos elsewhere, not sure where... That would be in someone else's garden. Someone who may have young children that could be blinded by your cat's shit. Someone who may be pregnant. Someone who may be disabled. Someone who may be immunocompromised. But as you say it's one less job for YOU to worry about.
Boiledpotatowitch · 23/02/2021 18:27

@WoolieLiberal That is genius! In fact just tell neighbours that's what you're going to do then when cat poos in garden you don't have to deal with it I'm going to do this but first I have to get a cat

finished31 · 23/02/2021 18:31

@Carlislemumof4

My sympathy lies with your neighbour.

I'm a cat owner and lover. My cat is an indoor cat with a litter tray so I fully clean up and safely dispose of all her poo.

My neighbour has an outdoor cat. We have postage stamp gardens, I have four children. He watches his cat shit in our small flower beds from his kitchen window, turning a space on our private property for my children to enjoy in to a litter tray. Then watches me clean it up. Disgusting, if you're not prepared to fully clean up after your own pet don't get one.

I feel no qualms in chucking water at his cat, it's the only thing that deters her from our garden.

This was our neighbours many years ago when DC's were little. DH would scoop it up on a spade and chuck it over their fence!
DoreenWinkings · 23/02/2021 18:56

If I knew my cat was shitting in my neighbours garden and bothering them I'd probably offer to pick it up because I like my neighbours.

I live rurally though and I'm not sure removing cat shit would help local gardens that much. We have regular visits from foxes (which the cats chase off), badgers (which they do not!), hedgehogs, game birds, owls, bats, all of the rodents etc etc

My children have never, ever come in from the garden with poo on them, of any variety?? Maybe they repel it, they're pretty disgusting on their own to be fair.

As for trapping the cats in the garden, I wouldn't do it. I regularly see my cats (and other neighbouring cats I recognise) well over a mile away from home. Trapping them in a couple of hundred feet would feel a bit cruel.

Dave222 · 24/03/2024 23:24

I go round my mums house once a week and my main job there is to walk around her lawn and flower beds and pick up the all the cat excrement all over them, they even do it in the hedge! Totally agree with the poster who said a cat is a really lazy persons pet, someone who knows full well that their cat will be covering all their neighbours lawns flower beds gardens etc in their cats excrement every day! If you haven't got a way to stop covering your neighbours gardens in your cats excrement then don't get a cat, seems obvious does it not. It is not in any way at all all your neighbours responsibility to think and pay for ways and means to stop your cat covering their garden repeatedly in your cats disgusting excrement it is obviously your responsibility 100%. So, you think of a solution, not them, or don't get a cat I don't understand what is so complicated.

SuziGnome · 18/07/2024 14:30

Yes, Yes Yes, cats are a nuisance if you dont have one if you have a dog, they chase them off, but since my dog died of old age, they use my garden as a toilet.
So, I take the poo round to the person who's cats are doing it and give it to them in a sandwich bag, I have told them I don't want to fall out about it but they will continue to get poo parcels, until they stop cats wandering or they get rid of them.
It is lawful and no health hazard if bagged.

That sounds like a sensible solution.

I've made an outdoor litter area for my cats and they seem happy using that so I don't think they go in my neighbours' gardens, but if they did and the neighbours did what you're doing, it wouldn't cause any issues.
