Do you think the English, if given a vote, would vote for independence from the rest of the UK?

Yabu - No they wouldn't
Yanbu - Yes they would

The break up of the UK seems high chance to me, maybe 60/40 to be voted for within the next ten years. They don't ever seem to ask the English what would you personally vote?

I'd be willing to go to quite some lengths to never have to listen to Nicola Sturgeon and her followers ever again.

BidensWingWoman · 16/02/2021 18:20

Well you can experiment with the name - technically if Scotland left, there would not be Great Britain

That makes no sense. Why would the name of the island change? Ireland is called Ireland, despite being made up of two countries.

Borneo contains, iirc, three different countries.

Why would the name of the island change?

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:29

Northern Ireland is distinguished from Great Britain legally in our current name as you can see in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

You can no longer refer to "Great Britain" since that would include Scotland (after it had independence). It is not just geographic - the name of the country must define the territories it covers legally.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:30

Name of the nation! Ugh

BidensWingWoman · 16/02/2021 18:33

But Great Britain isn't the name of the country. The country is the United Kingdom

Great Britain is the name of the landmass. The big one of the British Isles. I really don't see why that would change.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:37

We haven't been named as a land mass! Great Britain is defined in the Act of Union in 1707. That would be over as a legal entity if either Scotland or England and Wales left.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 16/02/2021 18:37

Perhaps North Britain of Scotland and South or Great Britain of England and Wales. Or West Britain of Wales and Central Britain of England!

It's all a mess and unnecessary so let's get along and be kind! What happened to be kind!?? I love all nations as we are British and all equally great!

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:38

I suppose my point is that in international law, you would have to change the definition of the "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" - it would no longer exist in that form.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:41

Haha! Yes in times past some people used to talk of "North Britain" and "North Britons".

That seems a loooong time ago.

We could have some fun with the new name

BidensWingWoman · 16/02/2021 18:49

But the situation in 1707 isn't particularly relevant. Great Britain is not a country.

You would certainly have to redefine what makes up the United Kingdom however, if any one of its constituent parts were to leave. But that's not the same thing.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 18:53

Its highly relevant! You have to remove the Acts of Union, and then remove the effect. Its how the law works - I don't think you can carry on referring to Great Britain as it is actually misleading - you can't refer to geographical entity as part of your nation's title. This is pretty aggressive as it implies you have a territorial claim over that place.

For example, following your logic, it might be okay to say now

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The Irish might be a bit pissed off about that.

Notreallyhappy · 16/02/2021 18:56

We can dream

BidensWingWoman · 16/02/2021 19:02

I literally JUST SAID you'd need to redefine what makes up the UK.

So whatever 'logic' you are using, it isn't mine!

When I said the act of them Union wasn't particularly relevant, it was in regards to the name of the country. Because the country is not called Great Britain. It hasn't been for a long time. So why reference to the country being called that in the act of the Union is outdated.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 16/02/2021 19:04

How about the one and only separatist to have her own little off shore island! Called it Nicola Sturgeonland or something to befit her ego and the SNP seemingly single purpose party which is possibly only liked by half of Scotland and no friend of all other Brits. The legally binding Scottish referendum speaks volumes as with Brexit. You can't have perpetual no time barred all you can eat referendums until you can eat all the cake (and drink all the whiskey)!

Joking lovely Scots! Just a bit of jest!

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 19:07

I suppose we say we weren't Great Britain anymore and define ourselves as "Amazing Britain" or "Insouciant Britain" or "New Britain"

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 19:13

Scotland should choose their own new name in the referendum perhaps?

The Entirely Separate Kingdom of Scotland

Yeah, sounds like an entirely kind spirited joke. Hmm

@redpencil77 "The extortion via the Scots of Scexit to keep them in the lifestyle they have become accustomed to"

More lazy stereotypes. Scotland isn't living a life of luxury paid for by England. Spending per head is slightly higher to allow for greater geographical spread. The things that are provided for the people of Scotland for free (university education, prescriptions, personal care, dental examinations, etc) the Scottish government chooses to provide from their set budget. The budget that is set by Westminster. The Westminster government could provide similar for the people of England, but they choose not to.

justbrewit · 16/02/2021 19:25

Yes I do think Scotland should go independent because I’m tired of listening / looking at NS in a daily basis. Though I actually agree with her more than BJ et al on the whole, life would be better without the added daily addition of that additional whining on the news. Also, I do think Scotland is a quite different country - different climate and different mentality in many ways.

London would then only need to fund more deprived areas across England and Wales. Scotland can do whatever it wants and would have nobody to blame. Maybe they’d do quite well. Everyone’s a winner.

Unfortunately, it would mean we are stuck with the royals all year round as they wouldn’t be able to bugger off to Balmoral Castle for Xmas. Good, at least that would put an end to their disgusting stag-hunting traditions. What would happen though to land in Scotland owned by the royals - would they just hand it over to become National Park maybe? I bet the royals would kick off Grin

justbrewit · 16/02/2021 19:29

What about the Duke Of Edinburgh? They would need to change his title Grin

wewillmeetagain · 16/02/2021 19:30

Not something I would vote for but i do think that yes the English would vote for independence from the rest of the UK.

Tagsisbk · 16/02/2021 19:30

The dissolution of the UK and reunification of the island of Ireland would be great.

However England (I say this as an English person) is very colonially minded and does as the right wing media tells it to (as evidenced by Brexit and the every election in the last 20 years) so I doubt it would vote for it.

Callixte · 16/02/2021 19:30

Engzit means Engzit!
Get Engzit done!
Red and white Engzit.
I don't think he knows about second Engzit.

Sure, a campaign could be launched to get people to support it. Whether or not it would be successful depends on the people of England, as it should.

The extortion via the Scots of Scexit... It's called Scoot.

LexMitior · 16/02/2021 19:34

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

I think you should watch the parody of Scottish nationalists and Nicola Sturgeon by Tracy Ullman on the BBC.

Very much along the lines of what you suggest!

XingMing · 16/02/2021 19:37

I would be very sad to see it happen. I hope it doesn't.
