I'm sure people will say 'the royals also get to sit around doing nothing because of their status' which is true enough. But they haven't been banging on about wanting financial independence or new progressive roles as private citizens, none of which H&M actually seem to have yet either. Don't make out they've somehow elevated themselves above the 'workshy' royals. They haven't.
That to me is what makes H&M marginally more irritating than the Royals.
The Royals are constantly trying to hide their wealth, big up their “work”, spread themselves thinly and count each fifteen minute activity as a separate “engagement” to make them look busier than they are. When that fails they get out the crowns and gowns or publish photos of the cute royal children for people to cluck over. They get away with it because some people are blind monarchists, most republicans are resigned to being stuck with them, the media goes easy on them (mostly) and because a lot of us slightly pity them as being captives in a gilded cage.
OTOH, H&M burst out, bugger off, take Papa’s cash by the bucket load, use an inherited fortune & family money to secure a massive mortgage while jobless, then sign contracts and brag about their non-job jobs, wont present their kid for cooing over, make themselves a luxury lifestyle that involves no real work and call it “freedom” and “service”.
At least Buckingham Palace know they’re lying to us. The Sussexes are deluded.
I will also give credit for this being a more entertaining circus ATM. Better value than we normally get.
Don’t ask me to pick a side though.
