On the whole, in my view - this is what it boils down to:

The British welcomed MM with open arms and felt she was a breath of fresh air and were delighted to see PH so happy.

Whilst there was and is some disgusting racism towards her,
overall I don't think this is a factor in the antogonism towards them now.

Other newcomers intothe RF have been treated just as badly in the past by the press including Diana, Sarah, Camilla and Kate.

People have turned against H&M because they are increasingly seen as privileged, lecturing, preaching hypocrites who come out with comical psychobabble which we don't relate to.

It's really, really sad that this is how things have turned out Sad

Lookingforwardto2021 · 19/02/2021 19:12

@GoLightlyontheEarth

Except she’s doing absolutely nothing herself which constitutes public service. A few photo ops at soup kitchens after being flown in at great expense. What are the two of them planning exactly which isn’t designed for publicity or to line their own pockets?
Vs...what has the royal family done? Just the same! That’s what I meant, she holds a mirror.

Since she is a foreigner doing the same elsewhere we find it difficult to accept. But it is the same as what the RF do, expect the RF is funded by the public purse. Which is worse!

Hence the anger, because it shows the RF as being quite pointless and patronising

BlushingBrightly · 19/02/2021 19:12

OK, so they don't have jobs then. They're getting deals because of their status. Though I notice nothing's been produced yet, except for that one lonely episode of the podcast from Christmas. Who knows if and when they'll provide this content?

I'm sure people will say 'the royals also get to sit around doing nothing because of their status' which is true enough. But they haven't been banging on about wanting financial independence or new progressive roles as private citizens, none of which H&M actually seem to have yet either. Don't make out they've somehow elevated themselves above the 'workshy' royals. They haven't.

Lookingforwardto2021 · 19/02/2021 19:13

@RickiTarr

I think that’s partly why meghan rubs some people the wrong way. She’s unwittingly holds a mirror to the monarchy and you see how pointless and irritating it is 😃 very hard for the royalists to square 😃

I think that is an incredibly astute take.

The tribe who are die hard monarchists and hate MM can’t bear to see H&M embodying the privilege without the pomp and circumstance removed because that’s just wrecking the carefully constructed illusion.

MM might yet bring down the monarchy.

agree 😃
HeadNorth · 19/02/2021 19:14

@Roussette

I do agree. I was surprised to see the 'public service' comment on the Queen's statement. It's not what I class as 'public service' but I know people who undertake the most extraordinary amount of public service
Yes, I thought the queens comment about them stepping away from 'a life of public service' was pretty tone deaf in the context of most of the useless hangers on in her family. I'm not surprised H&M picked up on it and answered back - she's not the boss of them any more - she must be fizzing.
Roussette · 19/02/2021 19:15

They haven't

Well... they have. They are self supporting. Unlike the rest of the RF

RickiTarr · 19/02/2021 19:17

@Puzzledandpissedoff

I always think W&K are very work shy

So do I, though again they're hardly alone in that

Over the years there have been various remarks about them being busy with their young family, growing into their new roles, etc, but to me it sounds like "you can have anything at all you want; just for god's sake stay together and don't frighten the horses, because we can't afford for another one to go wrong"

Even more so now. Everything is riding on the Cambridges and it’s a very 19th century trick they are being expected to pull off.

They’re only getting away with it with the (partial) cooperation of the media. If more scrutiny were put on their Caribbean getaways, their Cayman Island family trusts, their personal spending and so on this could all go south very fast after Charles accedes the throne.

Everyone’s playing very nice at the moment out of respect for a supposedly dutiful old lady of long service, but even last week more news about HMQ’s intervention to hide her wealth (in the 70s) came out.

This is not an institution for a multimedia, multichannel, long lens, internet era. Eventually all the secrets tumble out.

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 19:20

They're getting deals because of their status.

They’re getting deals because Netflix knows they are a draw. Whether you like it or not.

radiohaha · 19/02/2021 19:26

Will they still be a draw in say 5 years?

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 19/02/2021 19:27

@Samcro

The reality is the rf do very little. What service do any of them really perform? I can't help think that the pandemic has shown us who the real service givers are. During this whole thing the rf have been absent, whilst normal every day folk have been doing amazing things.
I couldn't agree more. I think they think they spread hope and cheer among the plebs, and that we should be grateful for that but they just do not get it. W&K zooming a few nurses and school children during lockdown really isn't what anyone could consider a public service. This is why it's so annoying hearing H&M go on endlessly about wanting to hear people's stories and help them get their voices heard and all the other nonsense they come out with. It doesn't help anyone ultimately, does it?
RickiTarr · 19/02/2021 19:28

I'm sure people will say 'the royals also get to sit around doing nothing because of their status' which is true enough. But they haven't been banging on about wanting financial independence or new progressive roles as private citizens, none of which H&M actually seem to have yet either. Don't make out they've somehow elevated themselves above the 'workshy' royals. They haven't.

That to me is what makes H&M marginally more irritating than the Royals.

The Royals are constantly trying to hide their wealth, big up their “work”, spread themselves thinly and count each fifteen minute activity as a separate “engagement” to make them look busier than they are. When that fails they get out the crowns and gowns or publish photos of the cute royal children for people to cluck over. They get away with it because some people are blind monarchists, most republicans are resigned to being stuck with them, the media goes easy on them (mostly) and because a lot of us slightly pity them as being captives in a gilded cage.

OTOH, H&M burst out, bugger off, take Papa’s cash by the bucket load, use an inherited fortune & family money to secure a massive mortgage while jobless, then sign contracts and brag about their non-job jobs, wont present their kid for cooing over, make themselves a luxury lifestyle that involves no real work and call it “freedom” and “service”.

At least Buckingham Palace know they’re lying to us. The Sussexes are deluded.

I will also give credit for this being a more entertaining circus ATM. Better value than we normally get.

Don’t ask me to pick a side though.

RickiTarr · 19/02/2021 19:31

@TheKeatingFive

They're getting deals because of their status.

They’re getting deals because Netflix knows they are a draw. Whether you like it or not.

They are a draw because of the vagina Harry emerged from. If MM had married an anonymous retired British soldier, however well to do, her Suits fame would not be securing a fraction of this.

This is just the latest ripple of the Diana phenomenon.

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 19:38

They are a draw because of the vagina Harry emerged from.

Sure, but what are you going to do? 🤷‍♀️

Roussette · 19/02/2021 19:38

Will they still be a draw in say 5 years?

That'll be their problem

RickiTarr · 19/02/2021 19:39

@TheKeatingFive

Laugh at it all and not take them seriously?
TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 19:41

Will they still be a draw in say 5 years?

Who knows?!?!

As has been pointed out, they have plenty of independent wealth, so no need to enrol in the accountancy course regardless.

MissTrip82 · 19/02/2021 19:41

Not sure why someone keeps arguing about their place in the ‘Royal pyramid’. The metaphor doesn’t relate to just the Royal Family, it’s the whole of British society. It’s a social pyramid with members of the royal family at the top. It’s not a sophisticated metaphor, sure, but it’s clear.

I think you’re arguing with a metaphor you seem to have completely misunderstood.

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 19:42

Laugh at it all and not take them seriously?

Knock yourself out.

Roussette · 19/02/2021 19:45

Who is?
I understand it perfectly

(I am answering you because I posted it)

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 19:46

I really doubt they needed a mortgage.

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 19:46

I don’t think that’s aimed at you rousette

RickiTarr · 19/02/2021 19:48

@TheKeatingFive

Laugh at it all and not take them seriously?

Knock yourself out.

We all are trust me. Grin I freelance in the media/arts. Half the people I known freelance in the media/arts. Some of these people are incredibly talented and it’s a pleasure to know them or work with them. Covid has been rough on our sectors. Very rough on some.

Then there are two complete clowns signing $$$$$$ contracts for something they have no track record in, with an extremely wooly description of their content and we know they got the contract because one of their mums was famous for being pretty and kind? It’s funny, believe me.

They even started one of their Archewell blurbs with “I’m my mother’s son, and I’m our son’s mother....” Where do you even start with that? Grin

Roussette · 19/02/2021 19:48

Oooops sorry! probably not, too quick on the typing here lol

GoLightlyontheEarth · 19/02/2021 19:49

@Roussette

They haven't

Well... they have. They are self supporting. Unlike the rest of the RF

So Charles isn’t funding them at all then? They bought that huge house themselves did they? They’re paying for all the staff and all the running costs themselves? The flights they take , the clothes they buy? The protection? That will use up their millions quite quickly I reckon. I don’t believe for a minute Charles isn’t subsidising them at a very high level. I don’t count the work the RF do as public service. I’m not a Royalist. I think they are an anachronism in the modern age. However, they largely have the sense not to whine and preach and take the high ground when they know nothing about what they’re talking about. Charles has been controversial but he does put the work into finding out about the subjects he speaks about. He’s not sitting around moaning and taking offence at every little slight. He isn’t picking fights with his family or flouncing around . He isn’t trading off an accident of birth to line his own pockets and promote himself. The whole fiasco is showing all the ridiculousness of our class system for what it is. People who aren’t very bright being given massive wealth and privilege so they can sit in Palaces and pretend they’re useful. We paid for Harry’s wedding. How have they repaid the goodwill and cost of it to the British people?
RickiTarr · 19/02/2021 19:51

@TheKeatingFive

use an inherited fortune & family money to secure a massive mortgage while jobless

I really doubt they needed a mortgage.

Nevertheless, they got one. Maybe for tax reasons? I’m not really familiar with the Californian financial climate.

This seems to have the HNW angle on it;
