To ask if you would put child forward for the vaccine trial?

So the Oxford vaccine is now to be tested in children as young as six. Would you put your child up for for children?

Everyone calling others stupid for not wanting it can now volunteer their kids! Because, you know... you're so confident that it's perfectly safe and the right thing to do.

@squeekums

Not a chance in hell I dont get why anyone would What if your kid has a reaction that kills or disables. Then it's your own fault your kids life is ruined or worse over
But the same could be said for letting them catch Covid. Is still take a chance on a vaccine rolled out to millions of people with no deaths than a virus that has proved to kill and disable people.
Hetilia · 13/02/2021 14:01

well luckily that won’t affect my life as I would say that is a way of forcing people to get it but taking certain things away.

I believe that people have the right to choose. even though I think people who can have it should have it. But I wouldn't want to take peoples rights away around their bodily autonomy. Because once you start, where does it end. I would just hope they made a rational decision based on logical information. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if we find we need a covid passport for many things, not just holidays or concerts, if there's not enough take up to create herd immunity. The step before ID cards, as Blair wanted so much.

TheSunshines · 13/02/2021 14:01

No.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 13/02/2021 14:03

I think my DD (9) would love to do it. She's really interested in science, medicine and biology and would like to be involved. I just don't think it's ok for me to give her permission when there is a small chance it could cause her harm and the individual benefit for her is negligible.

notprofessionallyoffended · 13/02/2021 14:04

Interesting.

Usually, for clinical trials, you put your kids forward because they are ill and anything is worth a shot because you've exhausted tested options. However, this is to test if something is safe, it's not to give them something they actually need. Isn't the age of informed medical consent usually around 12 or so?

If so, how on earth do new vaccines ever get safely tested on young children?

I don't know the answer.

Sirzy · 13/02/2021 14:04

Every drug needs to be tested on children before it is licensed for use in children.

Unfortunately none of the centres taking part are local enough for us but otherwise yes I would have discussed with DS about him taking part.

If people don’t step forward for trials we don’t get any new drugs

herecomesthsun · 13/02/2021 14:13

I have volunteered after discussing with the children for them to do this (don't know if it will be accepted). We have been shielding most of the year and I want them to be able to get back to normality, back to school, go on holiday, dance workshops, swimming, the cinema, birthday parties etc.

I think the risks with vaccines are generally very low and the risks with covid are greater. Long covid for example which we don't really understand. The risk to fertility is likely to be greater with covid than with the vaccine, if there's any risk at all. I really don't fancy my kids getting covid if we can avoid it, and we can't shield indefinitely.

Fembot123 · 13/02/2021 14:31

@Happycat1212

I don’t care what you think makes sense? We decline the flu vaccine as well, you know just because you have some vaccines you don’t have to have all of them?? They don’t have the chicken pox one either. It’s not all or nothing.
Don’t post on an open forum if you don’t want to discuss anything, save it for rants on your Facebook page.
Happycat1212 · 13/02/2021 14:35

Well you seem to think if you take one vaccine you must have them all, I can look into them and decide if I think they are right for us or not. And I was answering the op, you’ve chosen to take issues with me not wanting it.

ChancesWhatChances · 13/02/2021 14:40

Nope, never.

Maldives2006 · 13/02/2021 14:48

@coulditbeanymorerubbish Considering your eggs are already present from birth and this vaccine and this virus only stimulates your immune system in response to covid I would think your fertility is safe.

Besides that any research study that involves children are extremely difficult to get ethical approval. As a side ore most of the drugs we give children have not been tested on kids and are not licensed for use in children because of the difficulties in obtaining ethical approval.

Therefore in order for them to even consider this means they are 100% certain in the safety of the vaccine for children.

itallworkedouthorribly · 13/02/2021 14:48

Yes as they won't be trialling it without extensive testing first and will be monitoring carefully.

gamerchick · 13/02/2021 14:49

Yep. My youngest is well miffed he's too young.

I don't have the patience for people like the OP, my friend spent an hour on the phone crying about lockdown and her mental health, but is refusing the vaccine because it's been 'made too fast'. It doesn't make sense.

Don't fucking whinge about covid and restrictions if you're not willing to help yourself.

mummabubs · 13/02/2021 14:57

I'm pregnant and fought to have the COVID vaccine through work a few weeks ago. I also tried to be part of the adult trial whilst pregnant but wasn't eligible. Having read as much as is available scientifically about the current vaccines and also reading about how similar vaccines work I do not believe my unborn child is in danger from me having had it. If my other child was older and wasn't scared of injections I'd have no issue with them being part of a trial, providing I'd done the same amount of reading and research around what was being trialled as I did for myself. Again, it's all about informed decision and risk-taking.

IceBearRocks · 13/02/2021 15:01

@Useruseruserusee

I would yes, I have a CEV child.
Same.... We have asked our Paediatrician can our DS have the vaccine. DS has nearly died from a cold.... we want him immunised! We give him drugs every day that are not licenced for children and all these drugs go through a tube into his Jejunum...so not licenced for that either !!!
HikeForward · 13/02/2021 15:02

No I wouldn’t.

But then my 6-year-old had it asymptomatically (a strain bad enough to put me in hospital) and I’ve since had the vaccine at work.

The vaccine side effects were very unpleasant, I wouldn’t put a child through that unless it had been proven to be safe and effective in children.

GarlicMonkey · 13/02/2021 15:08

My 15 year old has been invited but he won't be participating. I've had the 1st jab but the side effects are so awful, I won't be having the 2nd. It's not worth feeling this ill from a vaccine when my chances of death/disability from covid are so small.

gamerchick · 13/02/2021 15:09

Instead of looking at it as a side effect. See it as an immune response. Which is what it is.

If you'd rather risk feeling that crap for longer with the actual thing then crack on

RagzReturnsRebooted · 13/02/2021 15:12

I would if covid was more of a risk to children. I would consider letting my 13 year old with asthma participate if he wanted to, after carefully considering and discussing it with him.

ArianaVenti · 13/02/2021 15:15

Hell yes. Does anyone have a link to sign up?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 13/02/2021 15:18

Yes I would if they were ok to go ahead with it.

My ECV 16 yr old shot out the door this week when we got the call for him to have it, they made a real parade of old doing a 'young' person at the vaccine centre. He couldn't care less 🤷🏻‍♀️

TitsalinaBumSquash · 13/02/2021 15:19

I should add, I have a 5 yr old, 8 and 14 yr old as well as the 16yr old.

Fembot123 · 13/02/2021 15:21

I really haven’t, I understand some people don’t want it but when I asked you if you’d still feel the same if Covid was deadly to children you should you would and that just seems like a very strange stance for a parent who cares to take.
Fembot123 · 13/02/2021 15:22

*you said you would
