of people and why? I'll start by saying as a brit I just love the Aussies for their chilled out nature and dry, self depreciating humour.

OP posts:

Awa and bile yer heid 😉

strudsespark · 12/02/2021 21:35

@Dinkydody
I actually had to google translate that, should have seen it coming Blush. It's not always easy being a foreigner on MN Grin.

BeautifulStar · 12/02/2021 21:43

Im english but i love ireland/the irish. Weve travelled the world and have had some of our best times in dublin and county clare. I love the humour and the way you feel welcome even in the most out of the way pub. Never had a bad night out in ireland.

Also the portuguese. We went to Costa de la Luz and the people were so unfriendly (have found this in other parts of spain also) we ended up driving over the border into Portugal for a change - Omg the difference! The loveliest, friendliest people you could ever meet - the fuss they made of the children! We ended up driving into portugal every night and had the best times.

BeautifulStar · 12/02/2021 21:47

Also met some lovely german men whilst in ireland - myself and my friend are tall blondes (dont know if this had anything to do with it) and Omg they made us feel like goddesses - so big up to german men! They were extremely “gentleman-like“ and bought us drinks etc. And very, very funny!

ClareBlue · 13/02/2021 00:25

Ukraine. The people are so unfriendly it is actually funny. Once I spent a whole week in Kieve and didn't see anyone smile once. I think I got some sort of acknowledgement the 10th time I was at reception in a hotel. I once paid for a meal without the waitress ever looking in my direction and ice stares you get in shops are colder than the weather.
I got yelled at for taking a picture of the main cathedral and once asked to join a tour group of 4 people that had just started a tour of a church and was told to go and wait for the next one in 4 hours. I tagged behind and got asked to leaveGrin. Public services like transport and police just yell at you all the time and everyone is suspicious of everyone. Great place to visit but don't expect a welcome.

AllesAusLiebe · 13/02/2021 01:47

Personally, I've never felt more at 'home' in any other country than I do here in the UK. I love the quirkiness here and customs and have met some wonderful people.

Also love Sweden after spending many holidays there as a kid. Lovely people and nature.

The only thing I've read about Germany on this thread that I can vaguely agree with is that it is often pretty tough to make friends. I've heard this so many times and it's actually quite accurate. It's easy to make acquaintances, of course, but I think that people here are much more open to the idea of making friends beyond a polite and superficial level.

DramaAlpaca · 13/02/2021 01:55

Ireland and the Irish people. It's why I've lived there for 20 years. Oh, and the fact that DH is Irish Smile

grassisjeweled · 13/02/2021 01:55

Meh, lived in Australia, there's a lot of good things about it but honestly I got a bit sick of the Aussies getting pissed/patriotism thing tbh.

Lcoe the Northern European countries - outdoorsy, laid back, have a good time but no one's gonna mock you if you don't get drunk and vomit every night. Respectable.

grassisjeweled · 13/02/2021 01:55

Love, not lcoe

Proudboomer · 13/02/2021 02:22

A few years ago I would have said Canada but they have now bought into all this gender crap and thrown women under the bus so I have gone off the whole nation.
Loved Romania. Even though the rural villages are quite poor they still have a community and everyone chips in whether it be for a funeral or a christening.
Love the history, sights, climate and diving in Egypt but spoilt by too many pervee men.
Nothing more fun than a night out in a Dublin pub.
Scotland is great for unspoilt scenery but spoilt by bad weather. So only short trips only.
Loved Malta. Great people and so small you can see it all in a week.

Casschops · 13/02/2021 02:34

Cymru, we spent 12 months in a rural Welsh speaking farming community. Excellent humans, pride in their culture, resourcefulness in hard times. The most beautiful mountains. I have proper hiraeth.

RJnomore1 · 13/02/2021 02:41

Italians! Culture , food, warmth, passion, family

And vino

BashfulClam · 13/02/2021 04:05

I’m Scottish and bloody love this place, the humour, the beautiful places we have, the people you randomly end up talking to anywhere. How we still come together when it matters because we can boogie (only scots might get that last bit.

Iflyaway · 13/02/2021 04:30

I travelled solo a lot pre-covid and loved most countries, met warm wonderful helpful people.

Ireland. Malaysia. Morocco, India.

This resonated with me..... Kenya and South Africa are the only places I've ever truly considered relocating to.

Tinkerbell456 · 13/02/2021 05:34

Born in England to an English Dad and an Irish Mum. Now live in Tasmania. I love anywhere in the UK or Ireland. Okay, it is true to say, and to quote Edmund Blackadder, you do need half a pint of phlegm in your throat to pronounce Welsh names, but that aside, lovely. Loved Egypt I loved. Is it dirty and poor? Yes, but somehow that didn’t bother me. The people and the culture were amazing, and the people are incredibly resilient. No understanding of the need to refrigerate dairy products ( I believe many Arab people are lactose intolerant).

PuppyMonkeyBaby · 13/02/2021 05:49

@FelicityPike

Canada! The hockey. Snow. Ice. Tim Hortons. The hockey. Lord Stanley’s Cup. Anne of Green Gables. Frasier the Mountie.
It's called The Stanley Cup, no one calls it Lord Stanley's Cup.

Tim Horton was a hockey player who died in a car crash whilst driving drunk. Tim's used to be great but now it's all about getting drive-throughs done asap and everybody else gets crap service.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/02/2021 06:14

I have travelled in 40+ countries and can say with some certainly that there are individual people, and aspects of national consciousness that are wonderful in all of then.

England humour
Scotland strength
France adherence to culture
Italy friendly certainty that their culture and food is the best
Belgium chips (I know but they are that good)
China trading and communications excellence, anyone can get you to understand anything, even when no one shares a language
Vietnam as above with coffee and kindness
Rwanda family and fun
Uganda I can't honestly say how incredible the Ugandan people are
NZ dour dry humour and honesty
Tanzania friendly kindness
Nicaragua decency and beauty
Iceland incredible sense of self

And on and on. I assume other people would find other things depending on who they met.

I can't describe the fantastic people I've been honoured to meet all over the world.

mmgirish · 13/02/2021 06:25
@mmgirish yes, I had a 4 week trip there winter 2019. But...the humidity. Wow!
You get used to the humidity and being wet all the time!

HeronLanyon · 13/02/2021 06:28

Greece. Consistently find the Greeks I’ve come across for decades of travel there a lovely combo of open, politically aware and conversant, direct and common sensical.

joystir59 · 13/02/2021 06:30

My own, United Kingdom. It's where I'm from, where I belong, spent decades trying to live elsewhere but warts and all this is home

LunaNorth · 13/02/2021 06:36

Mexico.

People are warm and hospitable, passionate and intense, family-oriented and love art and dogs.
Culture is colour, scale, drama and intensity.
The urban landscape is real. Mexico is a place that wears its history and its scars with pride and that makes them beautiful.
The coast is beyond beautiful. Ocean and beaches and perfect sunsets and night skies that glow with stars.
Nature in abundance - in the five days we spent on the coast we saw raccoons, hummingbirds, turtles, whales, iguanas...
The food. Off. The. Scale.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/02/2021 06:37

I work with people all over the world and I love the Brazilians, they are warm and fun.

I also love the people in Mozambique, the ones I met were cheerful and hard working.

flowerycurtain · 13/02/2021 06:38

Scotland. I loved living there.

Never once went on a night out without making a new friend.

The scenery

StepOutOfLine · 13/02/2021 06:47

I'm British and have lived in Italy, Spain and Belgium and travelled widely for fun.

The friendliest- Portugal (Italian friends and relatives who come to the UK also comment on the friendliness and willingness to help foreigners there too, especially in London)

Best place to bring up a child- probably Italy. (Or I wouldn't still be here)

Best education system- Italy if you're clever and studious (or I wouldn't still be here) the UK for university education.

The one I want my ashes scattering in- Spain

Jumpintothefire · 13/02/2021 07:17

Brummies .The People's Republic of Birmingham best by far . What a place .
