If they can convict him on one of the many crimes listed under ‘Crimes of Moral Turpitude’ that should be enough to disbar him.

Roussette · 14/02/2021 10:01

@maggiethecat
Totally agree.

I posted this on a thread about what makes people vulnerable to conspiracy theories.

This is an incredibly moving article from children of QAnon believers. What they are going through is horrendous. People forget that this conspiracy theory crap destroys families because these people care more about what they believe in, than they care about their children or partners or wider family.

QAnon is a cult that can trigger something with the most vulnerable who often think they are the most intelligent and buying into this stuff means they are in the know... unlike the rest of the sheep. But to read the stories in this article of children who have literally lost their parents to QAnon is heartbreaking.
Really worth a read.

Not peaceful if the Proud Boys are in sight or a Confederate Flag is raised.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 14/02/2021 10:07

There’s an unrelated crime documentary on Netflix about a missing woman at the Cecil Hotel in L.A. It gives you an insight into how easily some people get sucked in to and consumed by conspiracy theories in online communities.

'With his words and deeds, Mitch McConnell has shown how to retain power when you no longer hold it.

Why it matters: Perhaps the most powerful Senate leader since LBJ, McConnell sets the chamber’s agenda whether in the majority or, as he is now, the minority. This reality has huge consequences as President Biden pushes for coronavirus relief, confirmation of his nominees and legislation crucial to Democrats' popularity ahead of midterms.'

So the January Exception should now be renamed the McConnell Free Pass.

Is the GOP going to censure McConnell the way they did Liz Cheney?
She at least voted with her conscience which is more than Mitch did

prettybird

He could be charged with Criminal Incitement, which covers using speech to incite violence, riots or insurrection.

NotaRealLawyer · 14/02/2021 10:30

@Mittens030869

*People died, and many injured and traumatised. Shame on those who attempt to claim that these events were peaceful*.

No one is claiming that they were peaceful. One of Trump's lawyers called for stiff penalties for the rioters. They're saying that Trump wasn't guilty of inciting them.

I was agreeing with another poster, who made reference to the noose outside the Capitol. I wasn't talking about Trumps lawyers,
maggiethecat · 14/02/2021 10:32

@knittingaddict
Yesterday at the end of the trial when taking questions Raskin was clearly offended at the suggestion that the impeachment managers did not do enough in bringing witnesses. Some seem to feel that Herrera Beutler’s testimony would have swung things but the managers’ view is that making that call, with the likely resulting call for witnesses by the defence and dragging out the trial was not worth it.

Many Reps would probably have taken Mitch’s view - Trump guilty but that the trial was unconstitutional.

It would have been an exercise in futility.

DuncinToffee · 14/02/2021 10:37

Margaret Owen, Temporary Hermet @whateatsowls

The most American thing I can think of is that 57 people voted to convict and 43 voted to acquit, and the 43 people won

QuestionableDanceMoves · 14/02/2021 10:37

I do hope the Dems sit back and let the GOP self destruct now. They’ve backed Trump above the country and are censuring those who voted with their conscience and on the basis of the facts put before them, like they’re supposed to do.
For McConnell to make the speech he did last night, after voting not guilty, almost defies belief.
Never has party politics been more apparent than it was yesterday and I sincerely hope the GOP pays the price for that, but I doubt they will because people will continue to vote red as they’re terrified of the “socialist” dems

knittingaddict · 14/02/2021 10:41

I'm not criticising the Democrats in any way. I think they've done an amazing job at showing exactly what happened and how Trump is personally to blame. History will judge the Republicans for how they have behaved and I think this will come back and bite them. It's just the language in that quote that I have an issue with. I sincerely want to hope that Trump gets his punishment, but I don't think I want to pin my hopes on a cunning Democrat plan to make sure this happens.

HmmSureJan · 14/02/2021 10:41

sorry if I'm not welcome on here however I just wanted to point out that the rally speech was positive and peaceful imo and has been misrepresented. I'm completely unbiased - in fact I spent 4 years joining in with the all the Trump jokes and scorn.

I agree with you @TravellingTilbury but you won't get a fair hearing on here, you'll just be, as you have seen, be labelled a conspiracy theorist 🙄. I'm left of centre and despised Trump right up until late last summer when I was watching and reading about the riots and what was being reported just simply wasn't adding up so I started reading more and more and was staggered by the free passes BLM/Antifa and the far left were getting while anyone one not subscribing to those views were being utterly vilified and labelled facist/far right. I still don't like him now but I believe Trump Derangement Syndrome is a real thing and it's very much in evidence on this thread. I can't think of anything worse than him being president again in 2024 mainly because I can't see how the US can avoid deep unrest, possibly civil war if he manages to make it. He's just too divisive and works people up into a complete frenzy. It's a sorry state of affairs all round and I believe it will get worse before it gets better sadly.

BruceAndNosh · 14/02/2021 10:42

McConnell HAS unified the US
The Republicans hate him for saying Trump was guilty
The Democrats hate him for aquiting Trump despite his guilt

HmmSureJan · 14/02/2021 10:42

Ps I won't be sticking around to argue about this because it's utterly pointless but I do think it's important to offer alternative viewpoints so that others see that there isn't only One Way To Think.

knittingaddict · 14/02/2021 10:43

Just to add, that I now a fair bit about Qanon and the language struck me as unfortunate. That's all really.

Roussette · 14/02/2021 10:43

Yes. And there's work to be done. And bearing in mind when Raskin or one of the Managers said that there was outstanding subpoeanas from the 2017 impeachment.... Given Covid, and the mess that Trump left the country in, Biden has a lot of building up the country to do, I don't think the Senate can afford to be tied up for years on 100's of witnesses being called by vindictive Republicans.

(vindictive because they LOST)

I'm also not buying that these left wing UK residents are suddenly seeing Trump in a new and better light, just when the vast majority of people were seeing him for the toxic, narcissistic troll that he is. That's quite a swing in your political pendulum.

Roussette · 14/02/2021 10:50

you'll just be, as you have seen, be labelled a conspiracy theorist

But she is! I am not labelling anyone at all, there are many many conspiracies that the poster concerned believes in. I could list all the stuff if you want but having been bullied online myself before, I won't do that as I don't think that is fair.

Too late. The time for that was before 2016.

Same here in the UK. Too late.

Still, it makes for an exciting life. Peace is far too overrated. It must be, since we struggle to live with it.

Roussette · 14/02/2021 10:56

That's a moving statement from Biden.

So brave for those who stood up for democracy against all odds.

This is a threat to Herrera Beutler from QAnon supporter and fellow Republican Taylor Greene. Horrible. And this is what those we stand up for right have to put up with.

“The gift that keeps on giving to the Democrats,” the Peach State Republican tweeted. “First voting to impeach innocent President Trump, then yapping to the press and throwing @GOPLeader under the bus, and now a tool as a witness for the Democrats running the circus trial. The Trump loyal 75 million are watching.”
