An interesting tweet thread here about “why Florida has significantly more Democrats than Republicans, but keeps going red.”

There was brief mention on this weeks Monkey Cage about geology accounting for an odd swathe of Democratic counties (states ?) in the East, due to the farming it allowed.

'A federal jury has indicted an Arkansas man on a number of charges after he allegedly used a flag pole to beat a police officer during the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Peter Stager, 41, is accused of using a dangerous or deadly weapon to "forcibly assault, resist, impose, impede, intimidate and interfere with an officer," in Washington, DC, last month, according to an indictment unsealed on Wednesday.'

www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/mark-zuckerberg-joel-kaplan-facebook-alex-jones

'In April 2019, Facebook was preparing to ban one of the internet’s most notorious spreaders of misinformation and hate, Infowars founder Alex Jones. Then CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally intervened.

Jones had gained infamy for claiming that the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was a “giant hoax,” and that the teenage survivors of the 2018 Parkland shooting were “crisis actors.” But Facebook had found that he was also relentlessly spreading hate against various groups, including Muslims and trans people. That behavior qualified him for expulsion from the social network under the company's policies for "dangerous individuals and organizations," which required Facebook to also remove any content that expressed “praise or support” for them.

But Zuckerberg didn’t consider the Infowars founder to be a hate figure, according to a person familiar with the decision, so he overruled his own internal experts and opened a gaping loophole: Facebook would permanently ban Jones and his company — but would not touch posts of praise and support for them from other Facebook users. This meant that Jones’ legions of followers could continue to share his lies across the world’s largest social network.'

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/02/2021 18:47

And people don't realise what a nasty piece of work Zuckerberg is. Why don't they? Have they not noticed the original reason for Facebook existing at all, or heard of Facemash?

No surprises here either.

www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/ivanka-trump-jared-kushner-made-millions-washington-what-cost-ncna1257795

'First things first: Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump should never have been allowed to work in the White House. Anti-nepotism rules exist for a reason, namely so that unqualified relatives of the president are not given jobs in the most important office in the world.

Kushner, the son of a now-pardoned felon and real estate magnate, came to the White House from his previous position as an executive in the family business, often playing the role of slumlord. Yet, he was tasked with solving everything from the opioid crisis to modernizing the federal government to criminal justice reform to Middle East peace to the coronavirus pandemic. He solved almost nothing, but he did reportedly help secure a pardon for his father.'

Ivanka's political future hinges on surviving her family's legal woes: Ex-GOP aide.
www.rawstory.com/ivanka-trump-2650644780/

On MSNBC Saturday, in response to the news that former first daughter Ivanka Trump is ruling out a Senate run in Florida, former GOP staffer Kurt Bardella suggested that the entire thing had been a publicity stunt — and that while Ivanka's political ambitions may well be real, they are going to be determined by the family's legal issues down the line.

"The fact Ivanka Trump reportedly told Marco Rubio, no, I'm not going to run for your Senate seat," said anchor Alex Witt. "Was that ever a serious consideration, or was that a headline grab for attention and some sort of legitimacy?"

"I think clearly it was a headline grab of attention; it's not, obviously, something that's seriously going to be done," said Bardella, who also previously served as a staffer for the far-right Breitbart News. "I expect Ivanka at some point to try to resurface in public life, to try to move on from the shadow of the Trump presidency. But at the end of the day, a lot of that, I think, will depend on what the legal situation is that the whole Trump family will likely have to deal with."

www.newsweek.com/capitol-riot-oath-keeper-militia-trump-led-insurrection-1570812

'Counsel for Jessica Watkins, of the far-right extremist group "Oath Keepers," argue that she and others believed Trump's bogus claims of widespread election fraud because of the "rhetoric of the President, his congressional supporters, and the right-wing media."

The claims were made in new court documents, released on Sunday, that seek Watkins' release from custody as she awaits trial over multiple charges related to the January 6 disorder, when Trump-supporters stormed the Capitol.'

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/02/2021 20:08

I find this "he fights for us every day" rhetoric seriously unhinged; he so clearly did no such thing ever! Or is "fights for us" an new code for "plays golf"?

Nothing to do with Doofus or POTUS but WTF? Shock

Twitter thread from:
twitter.com/leahmcelrath/status/1363569138627608576?s=21
I watched two videos on TikTok by a mom with her very young daughter.

The first video showed her holding a lighter to snow and saying how it “proves” it’s fake because she interpreted the black soot from the lighter as burning of alleged non-snow.

She was gleeful about it.

The next video showed her holding her daughter on her hip as they put a bowl of snow in the microwave to prove it supposedly isn’t snow because they think it won’t melt.

Of course, the snow melts.

Nonetheless, she and her daughter both say they still “know” it’s “fake.”

I am not sure how we go forward without even a fundamental shared reality.

And these folks are brainwashing their children, so it’s not going to stop with them.

In this video, @waltermasterson duets a video by yet another “snow truther” on TikTok.

Again: this is not the same video to which I referred above, but another one in the same vein.

The snow is government-generated or fake.

Thought a female oath keeper sounded unlikely. I know Trump has rabid female supporters but they tend to be shouting on the sidelines rather than being members of organised militia. Interesting that they argue jail is unsafe for them, I would have thought a far right extremist group would be unsafe too. Confused

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2021 23:11

Love it too!
Also - visible blob of pale substance visible on Donnie's upper right nostril.

Another also - fake snow!?! Don't know whether to laugh or cry really.

I think we all knew it, but “Trump is guilty of pandemicide”

lionheart · 21/02/2021 23:56

Yep.

I watched a news report about people buying second hand books by the crate load from internet dealers. Bought to make them look well-travelled or well-read or simply to add some colour coded background (God, don't get me started on that) when they are on the zoom.

I imagine the gun fiends are doing the same--albeit badly.

I saw someone refer to them as 'ammosexuals' the other day.

Pedant warning, although I get what is meant...

Surely pandemicide would be a good thing - linguistically it should mean killing off the pandemic.

Alternative suggestion - Trump is guilty of multiple manslaughter?
