Gaslighting in full view

Mitch McConnell, who refused to reconvene the Senate before January 19 to allow Trump's impeachment trial to start while he was still in office, says the Senate lacks jurisdiction to hold Trump to account because he's no longer in office.

Roussette · 13/02/2021 21:26

So according to McC, he is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanours but I'm not going to say that because he can't be removed as he's already gone.

'He's still liable for everything he did whilst in office'
He's talking about the criminal justice department now.

maggiethecat · 13/02/2021 21:27

Interesting to see where this is going. Is Mitch saying that Trump can still be tried under the criminal justice system? Is he pointing toward this?

ludothedog · 13/02/2021 21:27

Is he saying he should be charged criminally?

Mittens030869 · 13/02/2021 21:28

That is what he appears to be suggesting. That or that Trump could be sued in civil courts.

Igotjelly · 13/02/2021 21:28

I bloody well hope so! If he is allowed to run again it's a travesty!

ludothedog · 13/02/2021 21:29

All those police officers who were hurt should sue the shit out of him for damages

maggiethecat · 13/02/2021 21:31

My take is that Mitch doesn't want the senate Reps to share responsibility of conviction and alienate Trump's base but would very much want Trump to be criminally convicted.

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 21:33

John King @JohnKingCNN

McConnell insists no Senate jurisdiction, but says Trump "still liable for everything he did in office" in criminal justice system. "He didn't get away with anything yet." In one speech infuriating DEMS and Trump.

TheABC · 13/02/2021 21:33

Yep. As long as their hands are clean and spines removed, that what GOP wants.
DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 21:36

Ryan Struyk @RyanStruyk

New Trump statement: "It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance..."

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 21:37

Continued

TRUMP: "Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people."

lionheart · 13/02/2021 21:38

Sen. Chuck Schumer did a phenomenal job with that speech.

So McConnell appears to be saying Trump should be pursued through the criminal courts ...

maggiethecat · 13/02/2021 21:40

Hadn't realised that Senator Burr voted against constitutionality yet voted to convict.

CNN explaining that senate vote on constitutionality made it constitutional and so thereafter there was a clean slate to vote on guilt. Which is what Burr found and apparently Mitch did too, from his blistering attach on Trump, except that Mitch is hanging on to the constitutionality point although that point was settled by the vote at the beginning.

maggiethecat · 13/02/2021 21:49

"attack" on Trump

AcrossthePond55 · 13/02/2021 21:53

Well what the hell? I turn off the tv for an hour and come back to find it's all over.

Thanks to all for your posts. You brought me up to date faster than the news did!

The verdict is no surprise. Still a disappointment, but not a surprise.

McConnell has shown again just what a non-principled weasel he is. He just wants to keep his own hands 'clean'. He doesn't realize that he's already deeply covered in Doofus' filth.

PerkingFaintly · 13/02/2021 21:53

More Republicans voted guilty than I expected.

McConnell doesn't have a sincere bone in his body, though. He does whatever works for his own objectives, and then fishes for an excuse to say out loud.

Lweji · 13/02/2021 22:04

Same as you.
Don't know what to make of it.

BTW, who is the party leader now?

maggiethecat · 13/02/2021 22:08

Some Dems upset that witnesses not called especially Jamie Herrera Beutler but Raskin just explained that no matter how many witnesses had they called many Rep senators would have relied on the scapegoat and voted on the constitutionality point just as Mitch did.

QuestionableDanceMoves · 13/02/2021 22:10

Such a shame that not guilty votes didn’t have to have a reason attached to them and unconstitutional couldn’t be a reason given that the senate had already voted on the constitutional merits of the trial

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 22:13

Lewis Goodall @lewis_goodall

A number asking why the GOP didn't vote to convict and ensure he can't run again

1) Some (esp in the House) are committed to Trump and believe him.
2)Some (like McConnell) are thinking about 2022 midterms
3)Some thinking about being primaried
4)Some thinking about running in 24

Flumpypie · 13/02/2021 22:15

Please excuse me if I sound thick but why did the GOP want him acquitted?
Surely if Trump can hold office and starts a new political party it would split the republican vote, handing it to the Dems Confused, or are they hoping he comes back to the party.
