New on @MSNBC: Claire McCaskill says the Senate is discussing entering into the record written testimony from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler. No witnesses would be called. That testimony would become part of the trial record, and then the Senate would move on to closing arguments.

The Republicans might be worried about what else Herrera Beutler might disclose, so think that entering the interview as evidence is the lesser of the evils.

There's also a chance others could be considering following her lead and disclosing damaging information.

The question is whether there is anything that could change the Republican Senators minds about how they will vote, as they seem very clear of how they will vote currently. It would have to be a bombshell.

CNN are positively giddy with excitement at the prospect of witnesses and with the twists and turns of this.

I say open the flood gates, bring them in and make it so hard for them to fail to convict him. That is if they can continue with other business whist the trial is going on.

I took the concession as to entering the written statement rather than witness deposition as that the orange one admitted that this was true - did I hear correctly?

Everyone calm down. While we don’t know why witnesses weren’t called, we know that the Democrats didn’t “cave.” They’re not hapless idiots. They’re savvy fighters, and they must have had a damn good reason for this. Stop blindly attacking them and let this play out.

One thing Dem leadership could do right now is explain that the decision to forego witnesses does not mean no further investigation of 1/6 - just means will happen separately from impeachment. Several congressional probes already underway; might be better to create commission
