Why is the defence consulting with the GOP 'jurors'?. Not sure how that's allowed!

NotaRealLawyer · 13/02/2021 15:37

Thanks Across for the clarification. Flowers

Roussette · 13/02/2021 15:38

If Graham thinks he's helped Trump he has bollocksed it up !

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 15:39

Yamiche Alcindor @yamiche

Reminder Sen Lindsey Graham who just voted for witnesses to be called has been meeting with Trump’s lawyers and discussing their legal strategy. This doesn’t mean he’s changed his mind on Trump’s guilt. It just means he wants to see witnesses.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/02/2021 15:42

As far as the 'fraternization', visiting, and apparent 'back door chats', an impeachment trial isn't a criminal trial and isn't subject to all the normal rules.

I don't understand all the ins and outs myself but that's pretty much what we're told on TV when people raise questions.

Per MSNBC the Defense wants to call Muriel Bowser (DC mayor) and Pelosi.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/02/2021 15:43

Herrera Beutler supposedly available for deposition tomorrow for 1 hour. Again, per MSNBC.

Roussette · 13/02/2021 15:46

Lyndsey Graham changing his voice in that spectacular fashion as the votes were being counted...
He obviously wanted it known. Was he being instructed by Trump as the vote was going through?

How is there no recourse for McConnell refusing the bring senate back in order to begin the impeachment while Trump was still in office and then using the fact he’s no longer in office as a reason to acquit

He’s manipulated the whole situation- surely that shouldn’t be allowed?

So many holes and grey areas. Going forward, January looks a great time for outgoing presidents to commit crimes and face no consequences!

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 15:49

Kyle Griffin @KyleGriffin1

Marco Rubio calls Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler 'left wing Twitter.' And he seems to forget that 5 Republicans voted for witnesses. Doesn't fit his narrative quite as well.

Rubio's tweet
Last night left wing Twitter starting beating up the managers for not calling witnesses & this morning they caved

By a majority vote the Democrats can now force a trial where the House Managers get their witnesses & former President Trump gets none.

A complete farce

minou123 · 13/02/2021 15:50

Did anyone else see Trumps lawyer bad attempt of not saying Kamala's name?

"Err, K..., err Vice President K..., Vice President Harris"

Clearly he seen twitter and MSM, critiquing him that he can't pronounce her name properly.

Roussette · 13/02/2021 15:50

Did the Impeachment Managers choose to have Leahy in charge? Is it his default position and had to be him?
It's just that he isn't very clear with it all....

OP posts:
prettybird · 13/02/2021 15:51

Don't think they had a choice. He's the equivalent of "Father of the House".

ListeningQuietly · 13/02/2021 15:52

Impeachment rules laid out in a clear manner

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 15:59

Manu Raju @mkraju

Here's what happens now:

1) There needs to be vote on simple majority basis to subpoena specific witnesses, such as Herrera Beutler or anyone else.
2) If they vote to subpoena a witness, then trial will slow down dramatically. They may need to recess and find time to depose her
3) Then after the deposition, the chamber would need to set new guidelines on what do to with the testimony that derives from the witness.

Roussette · 13/02/2021 16:07

Could someone explain why the Repubs would want to call Kamala Harris and what she has to do with this?

I presume this decision by Raskin to call a witness was fully discussed with those that matter, it just wouldn't have been a spur of the moment decision...?

ListeningQuietly · 13/02/2021 16:09

So Lindsay Graham stopped all of hi Republican colleagues from acquitting and then going home

ha bloody ha

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 16:13

John Santucci @santucci

Sources close to president Trump are floored by what just happened. “Stunned”. “Stupefied”. “Digesting this” are the words @KFaulders & me are hearing.

DuncinToffee · 13/02/2021 16:43

John Bresnahan @bresreports

Trump’s defense team says they have 301 witnesses “so far” that they want to call

/2 Of course they can’t call 301 witnesses. This is just a threat to ask for that many, the Senate will never approve

/3 On this list is @SpeakerPelosi @VP @SenSchumer & the House impeachment managers. That’s just Page 1

Roussette · 13/02/2021 16:45

Some Republicans are really vindictive aren't they.... they just want to gridlock the Senate.

OP posts:
minou123 · 13/02/2021 16:56

See, this is where my vindictiveness would kick in and I would allow them to call 301 witnesses.
For 2 reasons:

  1. This will take forever to do. In the meantime they cannot work on anything else to make money. And Trump certainly won't be paying them.
  1. Purely for the fun of it. Call thier bluff. They think the Senate will vote no to these witnesses, therefore the defence will then later claim "see, there is no due process, "they" won't allow us to call witnesses".
I reckon the Senate should vote yes to thier witnesses and the panic in the defence will be pure joy.

But then I can be a bit vindictive Blush

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 13/02/2021 16:58

Roussette

They are. I wouldn't put it past them to refuse to move forward with any Covid decisions until the impeachment is over, even though they are capable of doing both.

It would be a bargaining tool, and no thought would be given to the fact that more American lives would be lost in the process.

ListeningQuietly · 13/02/2021 17:03

Gridlocking the Senate would top Biden getting on with running the country.
It must NOT happen.
Each witness needs to be approved by a simple majority
Dems have a majority.

ONLY witnesses who will shed light on the case should be allowed

this MUST NOT block the running of the country

Roussette · 13/02/2021 17:18

I'm confused about calling Nancy Pelosi. Is the Speaker of the House responsible for policing of the Capitol building? Repubs seem to be blaming her for all of this, just can't work out why.

Are they really going to be so nasty to call all these witnesses and hold up Covid decisions. I am taken aback with all of this, the divisions must be so deep
