Morning. Thanks for the coverage: I haven't been able to bring myself to watch most of it live.
The orange one reminds me of Mugabe, who was famous for his double-speeches: the naicy-naicy "I'm a good guy" bit in English for international consumption; and the bit in Shona direct to his fans, which was rather different.
Trump's managing to play that game without even switching languages. And in fact always has – we've commented on it on these threads before.
His words on 6 Jan are another version of his old favourite: "They say that X; I don't know, may be it's really Y; but they say X." His listeners come away each having heard the bit they wanted to hear.
So his listeners on 6 Jan heard "We're going to march up to the Capitol. You have to fight like hell or you won't have a country any more," followed by, "We love you."
And the Senate Trumpies are now hearing, "peacefully," and "now go home".
It's usually a really successful strategy for him. I think this may be in the same box as the "January exception": if inciting an attack is OK as long as you also add a few words saying the opposite which your followers ignore, then it's a blueprint for every future inciter.
