To think that all films should be 90 mins tops?

DH and I skipping around Netflix and Amazon for something to watch tonight with a takeaway (wedding anniversary). For info, we have one DS and both work full time so pretty knackered come 8pm.

He suggests a few, one sounds good but 2 hours 47 minutes!!! No way I'm making it to the end.

We finally settled on one which is 1 hour 34 mins. That means with a few wee breaks, we'll be done by 10pm. Perfect.

AIBU to think anything longer than 90 mins is unnecessary??

(This is lighthearted btw, and just the ramblings of a tired mum!)

Couldn’t agree more ! By the time we start a movie at say 730-8 I’m thinking there is no way I can do more than 2 hours. Older movies (I think pre 2000) were more around the 90-100 minute mark. I feel your pain, from another tired mum haha.

FrankieDoyle · 10/02/2021 18:27

I love long films so I'd have to disagree Smile
I save mine for the weekend, normally Sunday!

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 10/02/2021 18:28

Yes!! This is why I love watching Disney Pixar type films with my kids. They're all around 90mins and its perfect.
DH and I committed to the full extended Lord of the Rings films one weekend pre children. It nearly killed me but I felt I had to finish as we'd committed to it. When it was over I felt like I was in a different dimension.

boredwiththeoldname · 10/02/2021 18:28

90 minutes?

I've got a longer attention span than that.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 10/02/2021 18:28

I also would like to watch films before bed that are done before 10! I've got no kids, I just like sleep more. Also struggle to sit still for long periods of time.

Frozenintime · 10/02/2021 18:28

Oh no I love an epic Star Wars film.

Feetupteashot · 10/02/2021 18:28

Yanbu. A film has to be extremely good to deserve being 90+!

Zarinea · 10/02/2021 18:28

Yes!

Or at least have all the good stuff in the first 90 mins so it doesn't matter if I nod off.

Ilikegherkins · 10/02/2021 18:30

I would recommend ‘last breath’ if it’s still available if you havnt seen it already. Completely amazing - and a true story. I think I held my breath for the full 1 hour 25mins

Flickoffboris · 10/02/2021 18:31

90 minutes is the golden time isn't it. Most films that go in for 2 hours could easily have been condensed to 90 minutes without suffering for it.
I'm with you on this one.

Oysterbabe · 10/02/2021 18:33

Yanbu. I can't stand long films, I'm always so ready for them to end.

Sorry I thought my other link was the trailer

coldwarenigma · 10/02/2021 18:35

We watched a film this afternoon, 2hr and 6 mins...it could have been condensed, it was a family film too.Think kids would have lost interest, DH did..

hotcrosswhat · 10/02/2021 18:35

YANBU, I completely agree Smile

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 18:35

You haven't watched LOTR, have you😂

Redcrayons · 10/02/2021 18:36

Seconded.
If it’s any longer then I’ll probably fall asleep and have to watch it again. 2 hours plus is ridiculous, nobody can sit still for that long.

user1493413286 · 10/02/2021 18:39

I hugely feel this way! My DS wakes a lot in the night so I like to be in bed early but any films we want to watch once DC are in bed are too long. I’ve also not got a great attention span for films so I lose interest if they’re too long

ApocalypseNowt · 10/02/2021 18:41

Totally agree. This is why I'm glad I like horror films...they tend to be a bit more snappy Grin

88889998654e · 10/02/2021 18:41

I just watch for 1 hour and then save the rest for the next evening.

LondonPainter · 10/02/2021 18:43

Yes! It's rare to watch a 2 hour+ long film that couldn't have benefited from serious editing

Souther · 10/02/2021 18:43

I've been brought up on Bollywood movies.
90 minute films feel like I'm being shortchanged and feel quite superficial.
If its done well longer films are divine.

GammyLeg · 10/02/2021 18:44

This is such a bugbear of mine. And a lot of the long ones seem so unnecessarily so - they could do with a good edit.

YANBU

LolaSmiles · 10/02/2021 18:45

Seconded here too.
I find a lot of films have extra stuff added in that doesn't add anything, like long CGI sequences or lots of drone footage of settings.

If the film is excellent then I might not notice, but much above 2 hours would usually have benefited from editing in my opinion.

OneMillionSteps · 10/02/2021 18:46

I totally agree OP.

Anyone who wants to make a film longer than 90-100 minutes should have to justify to a special film committee why extra time is needed. “Showing off technical effects” and “padding out kids’ films with loads of extra random manic action scenes” would not be accepted as valid reasons.

Mellonsprite · 10/02/2021 18:46

Yes yes yes 🙌 OP! I have a rule that I don’t want to watch anything longer than 2 hrs, as I can’t stay awake that long, DH thinks I’m ridiculous.
