To think that all films should be 90 mins tops?

DH and I skipping around Netflix and Amazon for something to watch tonight with a takeaway (wedding anniversary). For info, we have one DS and both work full time so pretty knackered come 8pm.

He suggests a few, one sounds good but 2 hours 47 minutes!!! No way I'm making it to the end.

We finally settled on one which is 1 hour 34 mins. That means with a few wee breaks, we'll be done by 10pm. Perfect.

AIBU to think anything longer than 90 mins is unnecessary??

(This is lighthearted btw, and just the ramblings of a tired mum!)

The Green mile is an example of beautiful long film too😁

PracticingPerson · 10/02/2021 19:16

YABU of course, just split it in two halves!

You can't ask the rest of us to give up amazing Oscar-winning long films just because you're knackered Grin

Davros · 10/02/2021 19:16

I totally agree. The longer ones are full of padding. Except Schindler's List

Gettinggrumpier · 10/02/2021 19:17

OP, as we are grownups, surely we can stay up longer than 10pm even when working the next day!

Going to bed at midnight is early for me.Smile

GammyLeg · 10/02/2021 19:17

LOTR needs that extra length to tell the story, definitely.

The problem is the non LOTR films that are long with not enough heft to keep them interesting.

BrilliantBetty · 10/02/2021 19:18

I don't mind at home, we often watch a longer film over two evenings. Or an hour during baby's naptime and the rest in the evening, if it's a weekend.

But absolutely agree if it's at the cinema!! I have never been able to sit through a 2hr+ film.

buzzandwoodyallday · 10/02/2021 19:19

Yes yes yes!!! Absolutely spot on! No film should be longer than 90 minutes!

NeedToKnow101 · 10/02/2021 19:20

I agree! Hate overlong films.

mootymoo · 10/02/2021 19:20

Why? In an adult, I like long films! I don't need a wee break either because I'm not 4

BackforGood · 10/02/2021 19:21

I agree.
It is an unusual evening when I have much over 90mins to just sit and watch (comes up to 2 hours by the time you've faffed a bit, had a wee break, chosen the film, got a drink etc). Much better to keep films a sensible length.

SachaStark · 10/02/2021 19:22

But... but... Lord of the Rings?!

I can’t even watch the 3 hour cinematic versions anymore, because they aren’t good enough, it HAS to be the 4 hour extended editions.

However, I will give you that some over-powerful directors need to step back and have a word with themselves, or at least let someone else have a word with them. Wolf of Wall Street, for example, could do with about 40 minutes of fat trimmed away.

TartanCurtains · 10/02/2021 19:23

I whole heartedly agree with you. I also won't watch anything at the cinema that finishes later than 10pm!

I have only recently discovered something so obvious, I can't believe I didn't do this before. I now set a cut off point mid movie (and stick to it), and save the second part for the next night. Although I live alone and can do what I like. I see why this might not work if you don't!

RandyGiles06 · 10/02/2021 19:26

Agree. Whilst there are some fantastic long films, if DH suggested a film at the cinema and it was more than 2 hours long my heart would sink (back in the good old days when we could go to the cinema!)

MrMeSeeks · 10/02/2021 19:28

No ta, by the time you've got into the good stuff the films over.
I like a long film

ilovesooty · 10/02/2021 19:33

Obviously you won't be attempting Gone With the Wind or Schindler's List then.

People's attention spans do seem very short nowadays.

Souther · 10/02/2021 19:33

YABU.
It's like saying a good book should only be 200 pages maximum and anything longer just drags on.
A good story is a good story, it doesn't matter how long it takes to tell. If I'm going to the cinema I want to get value for my money and a 90 minute film doesn't cut it.

Coffeeandaride · 10/02/2021 19:34

I totally agree, I'd even sign a petition to Hollywood, how can anyone expect me to get kids asleep and then watch a film without falling asleep before the end?!

Coffeeandaride · 10/02/2021 19:35

If you have a long story to tell, film it in 2 parts

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 19:36

@Coffeeandaride

If you have a long story to tell, film it in 2 parts
Or people can watch it in 2 parts😁
Justa47 · 10/02/2021 19:36

@InsideNumberNine

Answer - No.

Tal45 · 10/02/2021 19:44

I love short films, I'm always really pleased when they're 90 minutes. There are some that need to be longer but so many just drag on for no good reason.

Agree OP

Oysterbabe · 10/02/2021 19:48

Thing is I can binge 6 x 30 minute episodes of a series easily but if I see a film is over 2 hours I'm like nah.

GravityFalls · 10/02/2021 19:50

I love a tight 90. Far more skill in telling a story concisely than letting it drag in for ages.
