To think that all films should be 90 mins tops?

DH and I skipping around Netflix and Amazon for something to watch tonight with a takeaway (wedding anniversary). For info, we have one DS and both work full time so pretty knackered come 8pm.

He suggests a few, one sounds good but 2 hours 47 minutes!!! No way I'm making it to the end.

We finally settled on one which is 1 hour 34 mins. That means with a few wee breaks, we'll be done by 10pm. Perfect.

AIBU to think anything longer than 90 mins is unnecessary??

(This is lighthearted btw, and just the ramblings of a tired mum!)

@SchrodingersImmigrant

You haven't watched LOTR, have you😂
I haven't watched all of it!

This is the problem with long films, for me. I watched the first part at the cinema and enjoyed it, but it was far too long. The effects were great, however, and it felt really close to Tolkein's vision.

By the time the second part came out the next year I couldn't face having to go back and watch the first part on DVD to remind myself what happened. I don't think I ever watched the second part.

By the time the third part came out I remember thinking that I was clearly never, ever going to actually watch the whole damn thing. Which was a pity, because I've read the book several times.

@boredwiththeoldname

90 minutes?

I've got a longer attention span than that.

This....

Children's films work with attention span of child.....adult films ......etc etc

Yabu

jambeforeclottedcream · 10/02/2021 19:55

@AubergineDream

In my house we have an interval
Sounds very civilised

Op yanbu 120 mins is my limit

It has to be a very good movie to exceed that

Clarich007 · 10/02/2021 19:59

I totally agree with one exception..Gone with the wind....that was about 4 hours but so good

Rewii · 10/02/2021 20:00

I miss long old films with intermissions!

RaininSummer · 10/02/2021 20:05

I don't know really. I love long films with great involved plots etc and shorter films are often the lightweight sort.

felulageller · 10/02/2021 20:06

I know this is light-hearted but multiple toilet trips in 90 minutes warrants a trip to the gp

SachaStark · 10/02/2021 20:08

Agreed, @RaininSummer, it tends to be cheap, shit comedies that stick to the old-fashioned 90 minutes.

I feel like genuinely good films that use every minute to their advantage and remain under an hour and a half are pretty rare. Before Sunrise, for instance.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 20:12

There is lots of independent films which are very short, but can be interesting. Maybe check them out. Independent film festivals have lists

LakieLady · 10/02/2021 20:13

@ilovesooty

Obviously you won't be attempting Gone With the Wind or Schindler's List then.

People's attention spans do seem very short nowadays.

I think there might be some truth in that.

And I'd like to know which bits people would edit out of Godfather 2, or Lawrence of Arabia!

I think the original film of Solaris is over 2.5 hours but when I first saw it, it seemed over in a flash, it was so hypnotic and absorbing.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 10/02/2021 20:17

I've been saying this for years! Thank you OP, thank you Grin

Austriana · 10/02/2021 20:19

Hmm I regularly watch the extended LOTR trilogy (around 12 hours long) , and followed by the Hobbit trilogy if I'm desperate.

I remember they showed Gone With The Wind. On channel 5 a couple of Christmases ago. Because of ad breaks the film started at like 10:30 and finished at 4:30
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/02/2021 20:39

Yanbu and if there was a filter on netflix that showed all the films that were 1.5 - 2 hrs that would be lovely.

I find these days that theres usually a subplot that could be cut and shorten the whole film without detriment to the story.

NovemberNameChangeYeahBaby · 10/02/2021 20:41

Although some of my favourite films ever are around the 3 hour mark, I do think that being able to filter by length on Netflix etc would be really helpful.

dudsville · 10/02/2021 20:43

We've started taking films in little bursts treating them like a short 2or3 episode series.

SageCardy · 10/02/2021 20:56

I get you.
Of course there are some movies that are brilliant and very long BUT I wish Netflix, Sky Movies et al let you filter by length Grin

Take Saturday nights, we finish watching the light entertainment stuff, we get some drinks, snacks etc. We want to settle watch a film but it's getting on for 10pm and it usually takes 30 mins to decide which

' This one?'

'Who's in it, oh he's usually good?'

'Yeah, gets 5 stars... "brilliantly nuanced comedy drama" it says...'

'Shall we then? How long is it... oh 2h 47 mins. Nah, keep looking'

I DO have the concentration span, I just don't have the stamina Blush. And to think, I used to think getting in at 4am on a Sunday morning could be classed as an early night.

Combo of movies and TV, it says under 90 minutes but i noticed some are a little bit over that.

kowari · 10/02/2021 21:06

@nocoolnamesleft

YABU. Some stories take longer to tell. Example: LOTR trilogy.
LOTR should have been six 2hr films IMO, it's six books in three volumes.
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/02/2021 22:12

@Rewii you are an angel! Thank you!

carlywurly · 10/02/2021 22:24

Grin totally agree - this has always been our rule here. Terrible attention spans.

I might actually feel slightly cheated in a cinema though.

giantwaterbottle · 10/02/2021 22:41

Totally agree!

jambeforeclottedcream · 10/02/2021 22:45

My other related bug bear is that why are the mini trailers for Netflix movies the entire movie is 2 mins. Like you've watched the trailer you've watched the movie

If they were longer than 2hr that might not be the case as much

Enola Holmes worked well as being watched over 2 nights

nosyupnorth · 10/02/2021 22:56

YABU

90 minutes is kids movie length - fine if you want a very simple story but as an adult I expect more from my media which means taking time for things like character development, worldbuilding, and subplots ect

If you prefer short format entertainment watch TV series

Snowsnowglorioussnow · 10/02/2021 22:58

Oh gosh no.. Just re watched the god father films I want the un edited versions...
