To think that all films should be 90 mins tops?

DH and I skipping around Netflix and Amazon for something to watch tonight with a takeaway (wedding anniversary). For info, we have one DS and both work full time so pretty knackered come 8pm.

He suggests a few, one sounds good but 2 hours 47 minutes!!! No way I'm making it to the end.

We finally settled on one which is 1 hour 34 mins. That means with a few wee breaks, we'll be done by 10pm. Perfect.

AIBU to think anything longer than 90 mins is unnecessary??

(This is lighthearted btw, and just the ramblings of a tired mum!)

YANBU - anything over 90mins is usually self indulgence by the director and it would be a better film with a tighter edit. Films used to be around 90mins usually, they seem to have got longer and more bloated since the 90s.

Tomatobear · 10/02/2021 18:48

I agree, I said this to DH the other day. They never used to be so long. It puts me off watching them as I'll just fall asleep/get a dead bum!

Somanysplitends · 10/02/2021 18:51

YES! I'm always saying this! Long films feel to me like when you get a massive portion of food, feel really overfaced and can't face it 😅 this is why I like kids films, because they're a sensible length

eddiemairswife · 10/02/2021 18:52

In the olden days when people 'went to the pictures' main films were usually 90 minutes. There would be the B picture, then news and trailers then the main film. The whole programme was about 3 hours long.

NovemberR · 10/02/2021 18:52

Yes. That's about all I can manage to sit through. Longer than that and I start getting bored and fed up with sitting still, however good the film is.

AubergineDream · 10/02/2021 18:53

In my house we have an interval

Squidthing · 10/02/2021 18:55

I agree wholeheartedly! I sound like an old fart but I really think film makers have completely lost the art of editing these days.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 18:55

Ok, this is actually interesting😱

@SchrodingersImmigrant

You haven't watched LOTR, have you😂
I watched the last one in the Cinema with some friends and we spent about the last half an hour sat on the edge of our seats with our handbags on our knees desperate to leave. That film could have done with some serious trimming.

I remember going to the cinema on a date and watching some shite that dragged on and on. I fell asleep 😂

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/02/2021 19:02

YANBU when it comes to Lord of the Rings. I have the extended editions that are around 4 hours each. Still not long enough for me.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 10/02/2021 19:02

YABU, should have said!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 19:03

I enjoyed it but that's probably because I refused to go to the cinema to watch it😂
I suffered through titanic. But that was more about me not really caring for that movie rather than lenght😂

73kittycat73 · 10/02/2021 19:06

I've quite often fancied watching the old biblical films, or Gone With the Wind, but don't fancy watching for 4+ hours.

oblada · 10/02/2021 19:06

I LOVE long movies. But I'm also used to Bollywood / Indian movies. I don't mind 90mins but if I have the option to go for 2hours then I'll go for it (happy to do 3hrs too but trickier with the kids). Quite happy to stop part way and watch the rest some other time if time is short.

wanderings · 10/02/2021 19:08

Titanic was far too long (more than three hours). The iceberg does not appear until well into the second hour.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 19:09

Titanic was also bit shot

Ilikegherkins · 10/02/2021 19:09

I love a short film. Last Breath is amazing on Netflix if it’s still available. I literally held my breath for the whole 1hr 25 mins

This pandemic has definitely shortened my attention span

PickAChew · 10/02/2021 19:11

Some films do ramble, don't they. I lost the will to live about half way through the ghost busters remake.

Onedropbeat · 10/02/2021 19:12

I really want to see American gangster but the length puts me off

YANBU

InsideNumberNine · 10/02/2021 19:13

The worst is when you can see something like Ben Hur or Spartacus on the Sky planner. You skip through to see when it finishes and keep skipping forever!!

YABU. Some stories take longer to tell. Example: LOTR trilogy.

Gettinggrumpier · 10/02/2021 19:15

Disagree.

When it originally came out I watched it in full 3 times at the cinema. Great film. Grin

InsideNumberNine · 10/02/2021 19:15

@Onedropbeat - is that the new De Niro / Scorsese one? Same here! That'd be a three night job!!

To be fair, that was awful.
Caspianberg · 10/02/2021 19:15

Agree. I think this is why series have become more popular as each episode is only about 45mins long. You can choose to just watch one, or a few if you have time and energy.
