To ask where you clothes shop?

I feel like I've hit a wall, fashion-wise.

I turned 30 at the beginning of January. A couple of paydays later, I'd like to treat myself to some new clothes.

I used to shop at River Island and Topshop. But now they seem too young, or cheap-looking (the styling has really gone downhill recently, unless I am massively out of touch!) But then some other shops seem a bit too frumpy and mature.

Been browsing online and cannot seem to find any clothing websites that fit my taste. I rarely clothe shop for myself, just pick things up as and when I'm out round town shopping (pre-lockdown era!).

AIBU to ask where you shop and if you could recommend any decent stores to me? I browsed the Joules website the other day and quite liked it, so something similar to that maybe.

I'm 40s, and have shops I like for particular things really:

Levi's/Whistles - jeans
Other Stories - jumpers/cardis/t-shirts
Arket - cardis
Cos - trousers
Topshop/ASOS/Zara - dresses/skirts

I buy quite a bit from Etsy sellers (t-shirts mostly), and also dip in and out of Zara and H&M - I find them much more difficult to buy online from though. Last year when I started WFH I bought a few really nice t-shirts from Joanie which I wore with jeans or midi skirts.

Like PP I have plain jumpers from M&S which are fine - black cashmere polo neck, grey crew neck etc.

@Dontfuckingsaycheese

Oh and Lidl and Aldi! Lidl do lovely skinny jeans!
The Aldi denim jeggings were fab, but either I missed them last year or they didn't do them

I'm 34 (with a toddler) and have look felt too chubby and short for topshop & RI.

I now get my jeans from next (they even do in between sizes and 3 different leg lengths) but before DD I lived in New Look super skinny high waisted jeans

I live in sweatshirts at the moment - generally from Next.
Sometimes I can get a good haul from H&M, sometimes nothing catches my eye.

I've started looking online at wolf & badger and they have some very "interesting" things, but also some lovely jumpers and dresses.

Silk Fred for dresses (but can be hit and miss)

I often check out Selfridges and John Lewis (where I discovered Hush) then I see what brands I'm drawn to, then go to their websites direct.

Whistles but only in the sale! Luckily the sale section on their site is huge and there year round to have a browse.

Mint velvet, phase 8, mango. I used to buy work stuff in banana republic & Hobbs.

ChronicallyCurious · 09/02/2021 11:00

Zara, H&M, House of CB, ASOS

hammeringinmyhead · 09/02/2021 11:00

You do have to keep an eye on the news at the moment - for e.g. as the pp mentioned, Oasis and Warehouse being bought by BooHoo, TopShop by ASOS and Jack Wills by Mike Ashley/Mr Sports Direct means they'll likely shift production to even cheaper, shoddier factories.

Popsy321 · 09/02/2021 11:04

Mint velvet.
Reiss.
Supermarkets, mainly Tesco and Sainsbury's.
River island.
Kin.

My style changed when I had DC mid 30s - I went from glam to jeans and flats! The women on here really helped me.

I agree with PP - what do you WANT to wear? And what clothes fit your lifestyle?

So now I have DC my outfits are mainly the following:

Jeans, top/jumper, chunky boots
Stretchy dress and tights, boots
Dresses, denim jacket, trainers
Blazers instead of cardigans as not to look frumpy!

I do variations of the above using different colour blazers, colourful/printed dresses, a plain top and jeans but maybe some funky coloured trainers.

Think about what you want to wear then go out and find them!

I shop at New Look, Warehouse, Oasis, Silkfred, even the supermarkets!

43 here. I like the Innes and Marrimeko Uniqlo Collabs, DP's/Gap jeans Brora (Sale only) Lands End. Mango (sale only) Jigsaw, Mint Velvet, JL brands Kin and Modern Rarity (sale only)

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 09/02/2021 12:29

Oh and sainsbury's (forgot about that as have not been physically food shopping during covid)

Chocolatecake29 · 09/02/2021 12:44

I bought quite a bit from Esprit last year, worn loads and has washed well so far. I find them affordable (one income household) and been impressed with them so far. I'm 34, SAHM to small kids so I find it works well for me.

I need to get some bits for S&S this year so going to keep an eye out for the suggestions here.
