To ask where you clothes shop?

I feel like I've hit a wall, fashion-wise.

I turned 30 at the beginning of January. A couple of paydays later, I'd like to treat myself to some new clothes.

I used to shop at River Island and Topshop. But now they seem too young, or cheap-looking (the styling has really gone downhill recently, unless I am massively out of touch!) But then some other shops seem a bit too frumpy and mature.

Been browsing online and cannot seem to find any clothing websites that fit my taste. I rarely clothe shop for myself, just pick things up as and when I'm out round town shopping (pre-lockdown era!).

AIBU to ask where you shop and if you could recommend any decent stores to me? I browsed the Joules website the other day and quite liked it, so something similar to that maybe.

What's a clothes shop?

Sciurus83 · 09/02/2021 04:10

All Saints, Reiss, jumpers from white company and Hush (on Ebay as expensive), SilkFred, Zara, Sainsburys, still Topshop for jeans, H+M, Uniqlo

LunaNorth · 09/02/2021 04:28

Popsy for nice dresses with pockets.
Hush.
Toast.
Massimo Dutti.
Oliver Bonas.
Boden, but I just go for the plain stuff.
Great Plains.
French Connection.
Om and Ah.

Raggletaggles · 09/02/2021 04:41

Whistles, Cos and Toast (they all have loads of sales).
Clothes from these brands have lasted me years. Also HM for jeans.

speakout · 09/02/2021 07:03

Mostly charity shops.

TheMoth · 09/02/2021 07:24

Anywhere with a tall section for dresses.
Dorothy p for jeggings
H&m for jeans (different leg lengths)
Primary
Asks
Misguided

I tend do to a search for a particular item, then see where comes up.

I'm the wrong side of 40

Nobeautysleep · 09/02/2021 07:27

Whistles, Mint Velvet, Reiss, jigsaw, monsoon and next ... i am 34

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 09/02/2021 07:40

I'm 40 - I use H&M for my basics, jeans, t shirts etc Harkel for colourful work clothes, Joe Browns, Pretty Kitty, British retro etc for dresses.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/02/2021 07:44

Yes Oliver Bonas is another, and dd likes it too. I also shop at a couple of independents and for special occasions from LK Bennett. A little bit of Hobbs and makes stocked by John Lewis thrown in.

Fredthefrog · 09/02/2021 07:48

I'm mid 30s and hate shopping for clothes. I decided to try stick fix (on line stylist) they quiz you about styles and what you need and then send a box of 5 things in the price range you've set. Can be hit and miss and you probably won't like the whole box but I did it for awhile and got a fee nice things. Without having to trawl through online shops

catsarebetterthandogs9 · 09/02/2021 07:51

I'm similar aged with a toddler and an older child.
& other stories for cardigans, jumpers and dresses
Fat face sometimes but I've found the quality going steadily downhill
Levi jeans
Sainsburys for basics (t shirts etc that'll go under jumpers)

I have a scale of what I'll pay for which items Grin

midnightstar66 · 09/02/2021 07:52

H&M mostly as in normal times we have a huge one just done the road without going in to town. Their website and delivery is good too. I get the occasional bit from Asda during lockdown too, mix that with eBay for expensive bits , MandM direct for discounted sportswear and outdoor shops such as go outdoors, tk max (bit of a lucky dip) and the odd bit from Joules. So I have a hugely mixed bag, I live in a city but also do lots of messy outdoors stuff so need both.

Yorkshireswithallroasts · 09/02/2021 07:55

I’m mid 30s. I tend to have certain shops where I buy certain items. So Next for jeans, H&M for summer dresses, cardigans, jumpers etc, Seasalt, White Stuff and Joules for tops and sometimes dresses, Tu at Sainsbury’s for basics etc. And then John Lewis for everything else. It’s hard though, particularly because I hate shopping!

BarbaraofSeville · 09/02/2021 08:13

I used to shop mainly in Oasis & Warehouse but the quality and styling has gone massively downhill since they were sold to Boohoo

That's disappointing. Oasis were my go to for 'nice going out tops to wear with Jeans' once I could get over paying £30 for a scrap of polyester. But I liked the styling and they were flattering on me. I still have a couple that I used to wear on rotation for meals out and now need to guard them with my life should that ever become a thing again.

BigusBumus · 09/02/2021 08:23

I've got the same blouse from Pretty Lavish in every pattern and colour way! It's the Ambre blouse prettylavish.co.uk/search?q=Ambre&type=product

Bought the first one full
Price and now have alerts on eBay for whenever anyone sells one in my size!

I'm 49 and wear them with turned up jeans and Dr Martens mainly. Totally my style.

OnlyHappyWhenEating · 09/02/2021 08:26

Lucy and Yak are great for all ages and sizes, I think!
Fatface and Primark too.

Floisme · 09/02/2021 08:27

If you're 30 you've got at least half the high street wanting to dress you.
Come back in another 30 years and, if I'm still around, we can talk.

TheMoth · 09/02/2021 08:36

Oasis and warehouse missed a trick by not having a tall range. So many dresses I could have bought, but the waist would have been on my ribs.

Dryshampoo32 · 09/02/2021 08:38

I turned 30 a couple of years ago and have also found I’ve given up on New Look, Primark etc... I shop a lot online, try Silkfred, DLSB, AX Paris
When we can go out and about in shops I like H&M although rarely buy anything from their website because I find it difficult to use and the images never seem to do the clothes justice! I also shop in- person at M&S and all the supermarkets for easy fashion type-stuff. I bought a great cosy coat from Tesco for dog walking about three years ago and still going strong despite daily wear!

aintnothinbutagstring · 09/02/2021 08:40

If money was no issue, I'd buy everything from Everlane which is US based but they ship to UK. As is happens I only have one sweater and jeans from them. Am 35. I like very simply styled clothes, can't be doing with patterns and fuss these days.

theruffles · 09/02/2021 08:45

Ebay, charity shops - I like the idea of giving things a new life where possible. TU, Next, M&S, New Look, Boden (in the sale!), H&M.

louderthan · 09/02/2021 08:47

I'm 39 and get clothes from ASOS, H&M, Zara, Primark, charity shops and eBay. My mum is 76 and shops in the same places. Neither of us would ever shop in Fat Face, White Stuff, Joules as the clothes seem far too old and unstylish.
Work out what your style is first. Think of a garment you'd really like and do a Google search for it and filter to 'shopping'. Be as specific as possible. The best results you get will probably indicate shops with other stuff you would like.

Pyewhacket · 09/02/2021 08:50

M&S online for the essentials. I don't need anything else.

Royalbloo · 09/02/2021 08:52

Instead of looking at "brands" can you write a list of what you need/want? Then you can just search for those items? I find never ending trawling on clothes websites a total waste of time, but if you wanted a white cami or a pink long cardigan it's a lot easier to find one you want?
