Call me nosey but at 25 I’d not quite got into the sector I’m in now and at 35, I’d already started on my career path. Went to university, had my kids afterwards, but was done by the time I was 30yrs old. I’ll start £19,000 and £30,000. I will admit that it has accelerated since. But more interested in those crucial child rearing years between 25-35.

@Ginfordinner

Goodness. I have no idea how much I was earning 37 years ago. At 35 (27 years ago) I think I was on about £20k with a company car, but I really don't remember. I'm in a part of Yorkshire where average wages for what I do are about £26k.

Why are there so many how much do you earn threads on MN?

I don’t know about the motives of others, but I’m trying to gauge whether having children earlier or later is better for your career. I appreciate that this is difficult to judge based on some high starting salaries in some sectors.

Aged 25: about £23,000 per year
Aged 35: £67,000 plus (small) bonus

Bluesheep8 · 05/02/2021 13:56

25 £17k
35 £24k plus bonus

FredaFox · 05/02/2021 13:56

25 - about 16k I reckon
35 about 23k
45 30k

coffeeisyum · 05/02/2021 13:57

(my leap in salary was because, at 25, i was on the cusp of moving to a new job, in a new organisation, which was a significant step up in terms of size of company, profitability, and how senior I was. What the numbers don't tell you is that I spent my mid-20s to late 20s a frazzled, stressed wreck before I learned to cope better/move into a niche which was a little bit more suited towards my personality. So the leap in salary looks awesome but it's only a tiny part of the story.)

MrsSimonBasset · 05/02/2021 13:58

Thanks everyone, even those questioning why I started the thread. Nobody asked you to respond, you could have just skipped past it. I don’t feel like I’ve been hugely affected by having kids earlier, but I wanted to see what other women’s opinions were.

100ish not 35 yet

Mylittlesandwich · 05/02/2021 14:00

At 25 I earned about 18k.
At 28 I have returned from mat leave and reduced my hours to 30pw. I still earn 18k.
By 35 I should have graduated uni (again) and a starting salary for the job I want is 25k.

AbsitivelyPosolutely · 05/02/2021 14:00

22-30 - I was earning £22k.

I'm now 32 and earning just over £40k.

gwenneh · 05/02/2021 14:00

At 25, £18k.
At 35, £39k.

I only really settled on a "career path" at 32, so there was really not a lot of growth between 25-35. The real exponential career progression has been between 35-40.

I do often wish I had focused more in those first years out of uni!

xyzandabc · 05/02/2021 14:00

25: 30k civil service full time
35: nothing. SAHM for 2 yrs, 3 kids
40+: 13k school admin part time term time

LucyCC · 05/02/2021 14:02

25: about £20K
35: £60K

Absolutely meaningless as one is a London salary and one is not.

I’ve just had a baby at age 40 so child-free years above however I’ve been asked if I want my managers role when I return which would be a £20K uplift on my current salary.

Mustreadabook · 05/02/2021 14:03

I didn’t have my children until I was 35, so I must have missed those crucial childrearing years!

raspberryk · 05/02/2021 14:04

25- 0 was stay at home mum, had been on 16/17k before mat leave.

35- not quite there yet but I’ll be on 25k newly qualified band 5 nhs role.

Ginfordinner · 05/02/2021 14:04

I think it would be helpful to state what sector and what area people are in as it would be a better guide.

SusannahSophia · 05/02/2021 14:04

22, £8k in 1987
25, £14k in 1990
35, £30k in 2000

Tellto · 05/02/2021 14:05

25- 26k
35-78k

Then had children

SusannahSophia · 05/02/2021 14:06

PS, had my kids at 35+

Tellto · 05/02/2021 14:06

both in NE England

Hellohah · 05/02/2021 14:06

At 25, I worked part time so £7500
At 35, about £27000

bertieb7 · 05/02/2021 14:06

25- £47,000 + ~£15,000 bonus
31- £70,000 + ~£30,000 bonus

No kids yet but they are in the pipeline and do expect it to impact my career as I have seen it for so many others in my company sadly... I wasn't ready before now but am glad I got to a certain level before having them as think it will be easier to prove my value in advance of having kids. That being said, if I take a long time to conceive I might start having regrets as deep down I am far more family motivated than I am career motivated!
I really think there is no right answer.

WiltedDaffs · 05/02/2021 14:07

25: 22k full time
Couple years later, became a SAHM for several years.
35: 9k part time, term time

MyNameForToday1980 · 05/02/2021 14:07

25 c. £34K
35 c. £80K

The jumps tied in with job changes:

£45K at 27ish
£55K at 30ish
£75K early 30's

I've since had one more jump, but I don't expect it to go much higher (I'm at the top of my skillset).

Honeyroar · 05/02/2021 14:08

25- student grant
35 - about 30k

HappyFlamingo · 05/02/2021 14:09

25 - around 45k
35 - zero (SAHM)
45 - around 45k FTE (but pro rata as part time)
