Valentines for kids

Hufflepuffmamma · 04/02/2021 22:46

I am preparing for High Roasting.

I am fairly new to MN. I can imagine this has come up before ?

Just mentioned to husband I’m going order to order the kids valentines teddies. I get a cheap like pound shop assortment for them each year literally about 3 quid each. Obvs this year will need to grab online.

He’s laughed abandoned thinks it’s the weirdest thing to do. I honestly never considered it to be weird that I get them something cute for the day.

I always feel weird on valentines excusing the kids and them not having anything .. but I feel like I’ve just realised this is ridiculous ..

So

YABU:- Totally weird and first world that you would consider valentines for kids being normal. You need better boundaries.
YANBU:- It’s a bit of fun . Harmless . I get it .

Please .....don’t roast so much it’s awkward enough to realise you might have ridiculous parenting ideas ...

I find it really odd. It's traditions are about fertility and sexual:romantic love. I find it a bit creepy involving children. Plus I think it then it takes away from them wanting to make/buy a card & give it to someone they have a crush on when they're older.

Not everything has to be about the children. Leave them something to grow into.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 04/02/2021 23:15

I think those of you who say it’s not a day for kids need to grow up. Enjoy your cakes and biscuits and homemade cards with kids all

Aiaiaicorona · 04/02/2021 23:16

Is it not a bit wasteful buying crappy soft toys made by workers in some poor country in shit conditions for a pittance so your kids can chuck it out ASAP? I’ve never done valentines for the kids, barely do it for DH except an M&S meal day since it’s a total hallmark day just to make money. This year I have bought some heart shape biscuit cutters though so we’ll do some baking. I only bought them to bulk an online shop up to get free delivery.

I like my kids completely clueless about the societal pressures of Valentine’s Day.

CounsellorTroi · 04/02/2021 23:16

I find Valentine cards for relatives and children a bit weird to be honest. It's just the card companies trying to make as much money as possible out of it.

mootymoo · 04/02/2021 23:19

@Hufflepuffmamma

In the USA it's normal to do valentines with kids, they even had packs of 30 cards so your child can give a card to everyone in their class! In Britain it tends to be more a couples thing and even then we are a cynical bunch! I'm ordering a special breakfast probably, support a local business, and yes I will include dd if she can get herself out of bed.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 04/02/2021 23:19

St Valentine (and it is a religious feast day) is also the patron saint of people with epilepsy. Somewhat cools the ardour. St Margaret of Antioch is the lady for fertility.

edwinbear · 04/02/2021 23:20

I think it’s lovely to remind your DC how loved they are. I’ve bought DC things some years, not every year, but will probably pick them up a heart shaped chocolate or something in the supermarket this year. Because there is so little fun/joy around this year. It’s completely harmless OP.

SymphonyofShadows · 04/02/2021 23:20

Grow up? We aren’t the ones who are infantilising something that’s about adult relationships and (gasp) sex. Children can hear the word ‘no’ occasionally.

TheGoogleMum · 04/02/2021 23:21

I cant vote becuase I think its a little weird as its usually a day for lovers but actually that sounds kinda cute and kids do like a celebration. I'm not going to buy DD anything but maybe we'll make a card for DH together (me and DH don't really bother with valentines so I won't gethim a card otherwise!)

PADH · 04/02/2021 23:22

@TheSpottedDog

I’ve just ordered my dogs boyfriend a valentines card from moonpig so I’m probably not the best person to pass judgement 😂
I don't know why but this made me happy
Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 04/02/2021 23:22

It's traditions are about fertility and sexual:romantic love.

blimey, I've celebrated valentine with girlfriends in the past - before I became a boring married woman.

I can assure you there was nothing about sexual love there, and even less about fertility!

It's just a thing, it's as important or meaningless as you make it, it doesn't matter either way.

mootymoo · 04/02/2021 23:22

@CounsellorTroi

My dog has a girlfriend, I don't think dogs have exclusive relationships Grin but she's the only one he's left in proximity with - both have been to the vets but that hasn't put them offSmile

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 04/02/2021 23:24

just because you make it about sex doesn't mean everybody else does too!

you can make Christmas about sex too if you want, Easter is already done with "the rabbit". As hard as some posters try to become thread police, there really is no such thing as Christmas police or Valentine's police!😂

welliguessitwouldbenice · 04/02/2021 23:26

Are you religious @SymphonyofShadows?

RaininSummer · 04/02/2021 23:27

I will make my dog a Valentines card. I don't want him to feel left out in the park 💞🐺

I’ve acknowledged the weirdness myself thanks. Being new to MN the one thing I’ve noticed is the judgements are STRONG and often pointlessly mean ....

Must be nice..never to have a weird or different think you would like fellow humans to help you hash out...

I mean I literally thought this was the place to kind of just throw it out there .. get some advice ...

I have so many weird/random things that I’d appreciate debates on. So look forward to more annoying posts from moi Flowers[/quote]
If you're new to MN, I'm the Virgin Mary but do go on Wink

Why on earth do adult couples needs a day to celebrate the fact they have sex? Isn’t that what anniversaries are for?

During lockdown we make every occasion an event just to bring some change and interest for the little ones. We are doing Valentine's Day pass the parcel and musical chairs and valentine's take away.

Hufflepuffmamma · 04/02/2021 23:33

So valentines we celebrate is love based - there are loads of types of love. The focus is not sex.. I don’t need a special day as a reason to get my rocks off with the hubs.

I suppose I’ve always seen it as a day where I appreciate everyone . Yes I realise this sounds lame.

Deffo gonna move from teddies to baking - loving the chat on this thread though. So interesting to see all the different views .

Basically I think my management of V day stems from NEVER getting a valentines as a kid and always feeling mortified and desperate to fit in ... ( CRINGE) so I suppose I just never wanted my kids to feel like they had missed out...not the romance but more do on the feeling included ...

don’t Judge it was the 80’s/90’s being forlorn and waiting for someone to ask you out was basically a standard in my experience....Grin

Any excuse to decorate the house 🥴 I don’t usually but this year I’ve ordered personalised balloons, personalised boxes which I’m going to fill with goodies, I’ve got a heart shaped bath bomb and new pjs. I’ve also ordered valentines themed afternoon tea for us all. Each to their own 👀

welliguessitwouldbenice · 04/02/2021 23:35

@AnnaSW1i love this. I’m trying a new theme every Friday. Theme is probably too strong a word. But last week we had currywurst and Long Island iced tea. (Kids are over 18). This week is lamb rack and porn star martinis. Not the same but same sentiment as you. Keep going kiddo 😊

Hufflepuffmamma · 04/02/2021 23:38

@WorraLiberty this is my 2nd ever posting.

Last couple of months I’ve been reading stuff and maybe replying . But the last 2 weeks I’ve taken a dive into posting a couple of times. My last post was like tumbleweed. Nice this one is busier... do yes deffo new.

@Hufflepuffmamma any excuse for fun is good enough for me right now. I've got balloons, party poppers and chocolate hearts in the parcel layers and a couple of toys for the centre 😀
