To think a sitting Labour MP should operate in line with their manifesto

Leeds Labour MP has confirmed he doesn’t think women should have any sex segregated spaces (despite the commitment in the last manifesto), and that anyone who disagrees is a bigot.

If you vote for a party, shouldn’t you be able to rely on your MP abiding by manifesto commitments?

Also, what kind of woman hating psychopath thinks that refuges and prisons should be mixed sex?

I just had a look what areas Sobel's constituency covers and it includes Headingly, which has a dense student popultation. By which I mean houseshares and halls, so multiple occupancy properties, not a population of dense students. Given that a lot of universities and students are sold on gender woo, I wonder if Sobel thinks he best go hardline too to keep their votes? Especially as it was a Lib Dem seat and is now Labour Co-Op, rather than just Labour.

TerrificEchidnaSpikes · 06/02/2021 08:58

DH and I were discussing whether to bother writing to him (separately so he knows he's definitely not getting two votes). If we do, we'd expect some kind of woke-scolding "greatest hits of Twitter" list of myths and tropes in response? I mean, he's sitting pretty until 2024, and since the LDs are just as bad and everybody hates the Tories around here (including us) I don't know whether the loss of the reality-based voter base really bothers him.

Perhaps what we should do instead is print out the screenshots in the OP and turn them into posters to be displayed around the neighbourhood 😈

Floisme · 06/02/2021 09:12

Maybe, Terrific but I also think that, as long as voters like me keep telling ourselves it's our duty to vote Labour then he's never going to find out.

Scout I really hope you're wrong there, because the idea of MPs believing they need to abuse women to keep their constituents happy is just too depressing to think about on a Saturday morning.

I used to work on election campaigns and this is exactly what I would be suggesting right now. Maybe not billboards but I'd definitely be saving the tweets for my candidates next newsletter............
TheRealMcKenna · 06/02/2021 11:03

Maybe not billboards

Now is the perfect time for billboards. They are dirt cheap - particularly at train stations. Most of the major brands have pulled all their money out of them due to lockdown, so they are much cheaper than usual.

We need billboards with the Janice Turner question. Posie is good at organising billboards. I'd pay to a crowdfunder for that. Get the public thinking.

ChattyLion · 06/02/2021 12:48

Excellent idea!!

caringcarer · 06/02/2021 13:14

This just shows what a stupid man he is. You deserve a better MP than this. You could campaign to get him replaced. Follow Labour on Twitter and tweet about it. Perhaps it will be seen and he will be pulled back into line. Other members of Labour party may not even realise he is saying this nonsense. I often think internal communications is where Labour go wrong. Almost like they don't speak to each other about policy.

Please do this!!! I am in a neighbouring constituency so can help when restrictions are lifted.
shouldreallynamechangemore · 06/02/2021 13:25

One thing I want to point out is that candidates see spoiled ballots (they have to agree they are spoiled) so I would really like those of us who are going to spoil to do so with a consistent message. I was thinking #labourlosingwomen would be good. Short so they have time to read it and can look it up if they care.

HermioneWeasley · 06/02/2021 13:33

I would definitely chip in for billboards in his constituency (the non student parts) at the next election

Has he now deleted the tweet? I can’t see it.

MichelleofzeResistance · 06/02/2021 14:28

It was there this morning. I was reading the 160ish replies explaining to him very clearly, in some cases with pictures and diagrams and with quite surprising amounts of civility what the problem was. Bottom neatly presented to him in a bag.

TerrificEchidnaSpikes · 06/02/2021 16:21

@Beefcurtains79

Apparently he has deleted the one saying "no" but kept the one calling us bigots. It's like he's (a) chicken-shit and (b) never heard of screenshots.
Scout2016 · 06/02/2021 17:39

What a div. Glad I have already downloaded them both off here and sent them to Keir Keir Starmer and my MP then. Sure I won't be the only one either.

Scout2016 · 06/02/2021 17:40

I would also chip in for billboards. And leaflets.

Mittens030869 · 06/02/2021 18:16

I’ve found this thread really helpful. I’ve never voted Tory in my life, and I really don’t want to vote for them now, but I think I am going to find out which candidates are GC and decide my vote on that basis. I have two DDs (11 and 8) and that makes this issue all the more important for me.

Scout2016 · 06/02/2021 18:43

I find the They Work For You website useful. It gives a summary of MPs' voting records in various categories, such as raising tuition fees, military intervention abroad, taxes, same sex marriage and trident renewal.

I read a post on Twitter that said people will vote for politicians they dislike but not politicians that dislike them. That's where I am with Labour at the moment, I was a member for years but won't vote for a party that holds me with contempt.

Lowhum · 06/02/2021 19:10

I haven’t read the whole thread, but just want to say that I think that public toilets should not be mixed sex. He is wrong on this one.
How many times have women had to use the toilet with the door open because they are with young children or have a pram?
That is just one reason why we need separate sex toilets.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 06/02/2021 19:22

Good point.
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 06/02/2021 19:27

With regard to the original question, I think it should be tweaked...we are talking about toilets and changing rooms where schools are concerned surely - we don't want people to think we are aiming at single sex schools/classes. Also on the right to females for certain medical issues, it is dangerous and unnecessary to not want male doctors/consultants just because you are female...they are often the best qualified ones in a particular field. I don't have any issues with male doctors at all but if someone has been raped/assaulted it makes logical sense and is 'kind' to allow a female to carry out the examination.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/02/2021 19:35

labourtransequality.org.uk/the-definition-of-transphobia/

Labour party consultation on the definition of transphobia, note paragraph 6. :

Claiming there is a “conflict” between trans people’s rights and women’s or other communities’ rights is transphobic.

It seems that the Labour Party, or at least factions within it are trying to silence women.

The view of Sobel are clearly not limited to him.

MichelleofzeResistance · 06/02/2021 19:52

How many times have women had to use the toilet with the door open because they are with young children or have a pram?

Did you see the clip on the Twitter thread of the very masculine presenting person peeing, standing, in a cubicle in the women's toilets with the door wide open, shouting at the two female people in the main room who were understandably questioning the person's actions? From the accents, this was the UK.

In the women's loos, someone male presenting with a penis and the door wide open, doing their stuff and bellowing abuse at females about their right to do it.

That's what this is about.

MichelleofzeResistance · 06/02/2021 19:54

(And just to remind: this was not a theoretical scenario, this was a female person filming on their phone the scene they were witnessing)
