I saw Mr Tumble at Camp Bestival and he came across as a bit of a nob to be honest.
Just before the naked on a plate debacle happened, Sarah-Jane was at our local wolf sanctuary (which has since closed) for a "meet the star of CBBC" promotional event for young children. My son was around the age where he wanted to meet her, so off we went.
Honestly, she was awful. She was "only there" to sell signed photographs - wouldn't even let the toddlers have their photos taken with her - and CDs of her music (?!). Little children were upset, parents were cross, and I'm pretty sure a fair few complaints went into the sanctuary, who'd hired her to draw the crowds to their open day, about her abrupt rudeness towards little ones who were, after all, her bread and butter (so to speak).
My son, who liked their programme, refused to go anywhere near her - which could have been shyness, but might also have been because he didn't want her to tell him off for "interrupting" her signing the bog-standard headshots and CD cases the way she did pretty much every other small child who approached her whilst we were in the vicinity
They were mostly all too young to understand that their ideal image of Sarah-Jane was not necessarily her in real life, and a lot got to the point of tears because of her rudeness towards them. I remember explaining to my son (because we can all have an 'off' day) that perhaps she was just having a bad day... or had a headache from the sun... or (and I didn't say this) was simply a spoilt, arrogant cow who thought she was God's Gift to CBBC, because she worked with Justin Fletcher (who was a known figure before she came along). Afterwards, every time she appeared on screen, my son would change the channel or wander off to do something else - and although he remembers 'Mr Tumble' with fond 16 year old nostalgia
if I mention Sarah-Jane Honeywell... "Who?!", is the puzzled answer. Which probably says it all about why she's dredging up something that happened a long time ago (did Richard Bacon voluntarily bring up his sacking from 'Blue Peter', I wonder...?!) - trying to stay relevant now that her own children, by a bit-part 'Hollyoaks' actor, are the age her once adoring young fans were.
And yes, I've heard Justin Fletcher's a bit of a pompous "believes his own hype" sort, too... and they do say that like is drawn to like, don't they?
