I will be standing outside my house with my head bowed to remember Tom, and all the others that have lost their lives during this pandemic due to covid directly, or indirectly.

My hands will not meet. I don’t care what Supreme Leader Johnson orders us to do.

AIBU?

Also, clapping the fact someone has died? Wtaf 😒
How do you go to people are clapping because he's died?!
ShemShem · 03/02/2021 15:56

Okay... not sure why it needs to be announced on AIBU

rawalpindithelabrador · 03/02/2021 15:57

@bettbattenburg

I won't be outside. Because of Covid I wasn't able to go to my father's funeral and we weren't able to have any memorial service for him. Therefore I won't be doing something to remember somebody I didn't even know.
Me, neither. Of course it's thanks to this government's fucking incompetence that he died in the first place. Anyone who supports these venal, rotten Tories is as bad as these scum excuses for leaders.
Doomsdayiscoming · 03/02/2021 16:13

@rawalpindithelabrador

Now this is more like it.

I can't get excited about this either way, but I was amused by the BBC headline "Boris announces national clap". Wonder how anyone's managed to spread that about with all these lockdown restrictions!

user1471505494 · 03/02/2021 16:20

@Doomsdayiscoming

Wow. Subtlety is lost on you guys.

By clapping at the suggestion of Johnson you are indirectly supporting him, and his Govt.

By not clapping you can still pay your respects (if that is what you wish to do), or you can sit at home and donate to charity.

If no one claps tonight it sends a message to the incompetent fools that they do not have public support. And that they cannot use the death of good people to try and cover up for their woeful behaviour.

The only reason I won’t clap is because I totally disagree that it is the correct way to honour someone who has died. We don’t clap at funerals I will hold a respectful silence
VinylDetective · 03/02/2021 16:23

We don’t clap at funerals

But we do. Remember Diana’s funeral? I went to one a couple of years ago where there was applause after the eulogy.

I’m still not clapping at Johnson’s behest. Not that he’d ever know either way, there will be plenty who do.

NorbertMeubles · 03/02/2021 16:25

The irony of Boris telling us it's a good idea to clap for a man who raised money for the NHS, something he and his party think nothing of until it suits them and even then their support is minimal, is just something else.

AliceAbsolum · 03/02/2021 16:25

Oh Boris invented the virus! Right then. The government have done an amazing job with the vaccines - imagine being in the EU and waiting another 10 weeks to start?!
This Tory bashing is driving me insane.

I know right.

The NHS has gotten an extra £1.4b (£350m x4) since we left on January 1st. Johnson needs a statue.

The vaccine roll out is excellent. Unfortunately it’s the only thing this government has done that’s halfway competent. It’s not Tory bashing, it’s holding the government to account, which is integral to democracy.

Regardless of anyone politics, it's important @NorbertMeubles to get the facts right.

Cpt Tom didn't raise money directly for the HNS.

He raised it for NHS charities which is very different.

For the record- again- factual- the Tory government has increased NHS spending year upon year in excess of inflation, including training for nurses and drs, so please stop peddling myths.

Amazing! People don't know when or IF they will get a second one, do you think that's amazing? That could give the virus a chance to mutate, the vaccines were designed to be given as two of them. Tory policies have KILLED hundreds of thousands of people over the past ten years and stating that truth is 'bashing' them? They're murderers by the back door, scum of the Earth, crony-ocracy.

Didn't this fad start at football matches, for when fans can't be trusted to stay quiet, so the applause drowns out noise?
ZaZathecat · 03/02/2021 16:39

YANBU to do whatever you please. I won't even go outside or have a minute's silence because I think it's daft. My prerogative, as it is for anyone who wants to go the whole hog.

inquietant · 03/02/2021 16:40

@PandemicPalava

I don't get all this doorstep stuff. I am quite capable of thinking with reverence about things in my own house.
Yes quite. Standing in the dark on a deserted street, what does it achieve?
Teandsympathy · 03/02/2021 16:41

At 6.00 this evening I shall be cooking my dinner.

No other country in the world has done any better at all. The UK scientists have done a bloody marvellous job as has every one involved to get 10M people vaccinated in weeks.

Viruses mutate all the time- you do know that? That's why the flu vaccine changes every year to accommodate mutations.

Give credit where it is due.

NorbertMeubles · 03/02/2021 16:46

@RedWelliesAreHot 😂😂😂😂 ok

StillCoughingandLaughing · 03/02/2021 16:47

I just had a push notification from Deliveroo suggesting I might like to treat myself to a takeaway to enjoy after the clap, complete with a link to donate to their Free Meals For NHS Workers campaign.

But no - none of this has become in any way commercialised...

rawalpindithelabrador · 03/02/2021 16:49

No other country in the world has done any better at all.

Really? Israel has. That's a country. Hmm Giving out a vaccine contrary to how it's been bloody DESIGNED to score political points is insanity, it's playing with fire but hey, what do they care? Boris's dad has had both. That's how they roll, they don't give a FUCK about the public; their entire ideology is that they are some superior class of people and the public are there to serve them and not the other way round.

Give them credit, for fucking THIS up, too? NFW!

saraclara · 03/02/2021 16:50

I'm not going to clap today, and until recently I thought clapping at a funeral was a bit ick.

But when my friend and colleague died of Covid, and only her immediate family could attend her funeral, many of us who were her colleagues lined the street, socially distanced, to watch as her cortege passed, to support her family. As she passed by, spontaneous clapping broke out, and I was surprised at how right and how good it felt. We were expressing what she meant to us, and hopefully, it made her family feel better than they would if they'd just seen through their window, a line of solemn faces.

But I don't know Captain Tom or his family, and I fear that this is going to be another event where neighbours shame each other for not taking part, or boast about their road's 'Magnificent effort' on FB.

Crankley · 03/02/2021 16:55

Since I voted for them I guess I should clap but I won't. The whole thing is fucking stupid

Why does the minute of silence need to be done on the doorstep?

Because virtue signalling without an audience is pointless.

Israel? Hmmm...

You are being unreasonable.

It is far better to vaccinate more people so they ALL have some protection than fewer people and the more vulnerable will have no protection.

The difference between 1 and 2 jabs is minute in terms of protection. I hope you understand this. The jab - even one- will stop people dying and being admitted to hospital. It's far better more people have one jab than none. And meanwhile hundreds of 1000s more are being given each day.

I know people over 80 who have had both jabs, and I know others who have not. It was all to do with timing.

Stop ranting and read the actual facts.
