Who has the master bedroom in your house ?

We were just discussing this with a friend and she thought it was odd that we have the smallest room in the house.

My dc 14 and 7. Ds originally had main bedroom and DD middle bedroom.
This then switched 2 years ago as their needs changed.
I have always had the smaller bedroom. I have my double bed and no floor space etc but I find that I only really sleep in their so it’s never bothered me.
We are planning on moving soon and I think it will be a similar set up.

How do you work out who gets what room ?

Surely it just depends on which room suits people the best at the time?

Saying the parents have to have the master or biggest bedroom every time is weird. Our 2 shared the 'master' bedroom when they were little as that meant there was enough space for 2 beds.

itsgettingweird · 02/02/2021 17:35

I have 2 double bedrooms and it's just me and ds (16)

My room is very slightly smaller (sqm or so) but have the large fitted wardrobe. So I have the slightly smaller room but have the storage space and so have all the boxes of photos, Xmas decks etc.

If one room was particularly different in size dependent on other storage space available and just the need for rooms I'd do what works best for us. Including him having an obviously bigger one if needed.

Picklypickles · 02/02/2021 17:36

Me and my 7yr old share the bigger of our 2 rooms, my 9yr old has the smaller one and OH sleeps on the sofa because he snores like a tractor, he gets too hot upstairs and he's usually up til the early hours on the PS4 and isn't capable of not waking us all up if he comes upstairs.

I had considered taking the smaller room for myself and the children sharing the bigger room but I'm not sure my bed would physically fit in the smaller room and the children would be fighting even more than they do now if they had to share a room.

LucyMaxwellDM · 02/02/2021 17:41

My two daughters share the master bedroom . Always have. Never understood this attitude of “parents pay, parents get big room”. The girls use their room way more than I use mine. It makes sense for them to have it. Even when their dad and I were together we did this.

Contraversial · 02/02/2021 17:42

Middle and youngest share the main bedroom, oldest has the box room, other two share the middle room and we sleep in the dining room. Only way it would work as we wouldn't want DCs sleeping downstairs.

AlwaysLatte · 02/02/2021 17:45

We have the biggest room but not on principle - our two boys each have a good sized double with their own shared en-suite. If it had worked better for them for us to have a smaller room I wouldn't have minded though.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/02/2021 17:45

My DS1 has the biggest bedroom but we have a large bedroom with an ensuite and that's more important to me.

GrannyBags · 02/02/2021 17:45

At the moment my husband has the master bedroom (he’s on oxygen 24/7 due to Covid) I’m in the large double spare room and my son has the smallest bedroom to sleep in and the box room as a games/school room. I’m actually enjoying having my own space to be honest. I’ll have to move out when we have guests but that’s unlikely to be for a while.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/02/2021 17:47

In our last house the dc shared the master as we had a tiny 2bed flat so it was better to have both them and all their toys in one big room. The second room was smaller, but not small

In this house I don't even know which room would be the master - it really isn't obvious.

@PivotPivotPivottt

My 3 year old has the biggest room, my 9 year old has the second biggest and I have the box room. When I moved in I took the big bedroom and my youngest was still in her cot in my room with me, she was supposed to getting the box room when the time came.

In the end I decided to take the box room because I figured eventually she will have friends over to play, needs somewhere to store all her toys etc. My 9 year old got the offer of swapping to the biggest room and 3 year old could have her room but she wanted to keep the room she was in 🤷🏻‍♀️.I have a king size bed as well so by room is literally just bed with a small set of drawers (that don't open because of the bed) with my TV on top Grin. It doesn't bother me at all I go to my room at bed time to sleep it makes more sense for me children to have the bigger rooms.

Where do you put your clothes then?
MaLarkinn · 02/02/2021 18:10

We have the master with ensuite, my eldest daughter has the other bedroom with one suite and my other 3 children have a room each all roughly the same size.

SimonJT · 02/02/2021 18:13

Me, I have the master bedroom that has an en-suite, my sons bedroom was however larger, it has now been turned into two generous singles/decent size doubles.

I only use my bedroom for sleeping, so I don’t care what size it is, but I do like having an en-suite.

Sh05 · 02/02/2021 18:17

We have the new master bedroom in the loft because it has space for the cot. Girls have the original master where they have space for a dressing table and small armchair. Boys both have their own room, they shared previously.
At my mum's my parents always had the back bedroom and us sisters had the master, because it was bigger and also because my dad felt he could keep an eye on the car which could only be parked in the back street because we lived on the main road near a crossing.
Whatever works for each family, there's no right and wrong.

Imapotato · 02/02/2021 18:27

DP and I have the master bedroom for two reasons. 1. There are two of us, we have to share and the kids have their own rooms and 2. We pay the mortgage.

We don’t really have a box room so both dds bedrooms are a reasonable size and can fit a double bed in. So I don’t think they’re being short changed.

2pinkginsplease · 02/02/2021 18:32

Dd used to have the biggest room however we have partitioned it into 2 bedrooms and we now all have small rooms!

Once one of the children move out we will take partition down and make it 2 bedroomed again.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 02/02/2021 18:40

When I lived in a 2 bed apartment I had the master bedroom with en suite for a while. But then my lad got older and outgrew a cabin bed and needed a desk area so we swapped. Now in a 4 bed I have the master bedroom (no en-suite as Victorian house) and he has a big double bedroom plus a smaller double bedroom for his hobbies. 4th bedroom is an office.

welliguessitwouldbenice · 02/02/2021 18:40

I agree that’s it’s not a pecking order, it’s about what suits the whole family

Ibizafun · 02/02/2021 18:42

The Master and the Mistress!Grin dh and I. The adult kids have en-suites though so no room for complaint.

InFiveMins · 02/02/2021 18:47

Larger bedrooms should go to children and teenagers if possible, they need more space. All I do is sleep and get dressed in mine - seems very strange to insist on the master bedroom just because you're the adult and pay the mortgage and/or bills etc Confused Only exception would be the box room as our bed wouldn't fit in there.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 02/02/2021 18:48

We have the smallest of the 3 big bedrooms. Kids have the bigger 2 on the first floor. We are up on second floor and have our own en suite. Works for us as kids older and don't feel we need to be right next door. Nice to have our own floor

SpudsandGravy · 02/02/2021 18:51

Parents pay so get to choose. They might not prefer the largest. Either way, it's up to them.

JaceLancs · 02/02/2021 18:57

I have the biggest room but then I pay for it
DS has smallest room
Spare room (since DD moved out) is similar size to mine but without fitted wardrobes
I keep offering DS to swap either with spare or mine but he loves his cosy nest

Dutchesss · 02/02/2021 18:59

My children have the biggest rooms. They play in their rooms and use the floor space. I go in mine to sleep or sit on the bed.

visitorfromtheplanetzog · 02/02/2021 19:03

We have 3 bedrooms.

The 3rd one is so small you can either get a single bed in there, or a wardrobe, but not both.

The 2nd one is a very tight squeeze for a double, and you wouldn't be able to get the door to open all the way.

So we have the biggest one. I wouldn't exactly call it a 'master' bedroom, either - it's not roomy enough to be worthy of the title.

Kobanidaughters · 02/02/2021 19:05

We used to have the DC in the master because we only had two bedrooms and they had so much stuff, also it was massive so it doubled up as a playroom. Then we built an extension and we now have a lovely master but they each get their own room
