Who has the master bedroom in your house ?

We were just discussing this with a friend and she thought it was odd that we have the smallest room in the house.

My dc 14 and 7. Ds originally had main bedroom and DD middle bedroom.
This then switched 2 years ago as their needs changed.
I have always had the smaller bedroom. I have my double bed and no floor space etc but I find that I only really sleep in their so it’s never bothered me.
We are planning on moving soon and I think it will be a similar set up.

How do you work out who gets what room ?

Me - master with ensuite.

DS's now 18 & 15 (lived here since birth) - smaller rooms, although both doubles in size.
Ds1 has a double bed, ds2 has bunkbeds. Both have a desk and wardrobes and floor space.

Can totally understand how different things work in different situations though.

There are two big bedrooms, one with en suite, a mid size bedroom and a smaller one. The room with en suite is the guest room, I have big bedroom overlooking garden and the kids the other two, which they have switched. My daughter likes being in the smallest room, snd my son has taken over the downstairs games room as his. I am moving and I will give my daughter the converted loft with en suite (if there is a converted loft). I have promised her her own bathroom so whatever room has one is hers. I don't mind not having one.

lioncitygirl · 02/02/2021 13:42

Empty at the moment - but I sometimes sleep in there as husband snores so loud the house shakes.

Mamabear12 · 02/02/2021 13:42

Perhaps you are never in your room, but plenty of others use their room more often. I need my own space. Kids have a playroom to put their toys. I retreat to my room often when I need quiet and space (3 kids and a dog plus dh). My kids often come in my room and we have toys in every room in the house (they always trickle down from the playroom). The bathrooms even have some toys!! I do know some people though who give the biggest room to their kids. 3 families I know off the top of my head.

Surely the main reason that parents usually have the master bedroom is that they are two people, they have a double (or even kingsize) bed, and they need more wardrobe space for a full collection of adult-sized clothes

My 14 year old is still growing and is already over 6 ft. A foot taller than me. It's him that needs the wardrobe and bed space.

gabsdot45 · 02/02/2021 13:43

DH and I have the biggest bedroom. Although DDs room is only slightly smaller.
My parents slept , and still sleep, in the second biggest bedroom. They gave the biggest room to my 3 brothers who all shared.

Sbowiegirl · 02/02/2021 13:44

DH and I have it. But DS sleeps in with us a lot. Just now he has a small bedroom, but after lockdown we will we decorating and putting new carpets in the other big bedroom so that he will move into there (and sleep in there all night). His old room will be a study for me to WFH, with a sofa bed. We have another small spare room with a double bed and my mum sleeps in there when she visits. But really only enough room in there for a bed and small wardrobe

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 02/02/2021 13:45

I know nobody who gives the children the master bedroom. Surely the main reason that parents usually have the master bedroom is that they are two people, they have a double (or even kingsize) bed, and they need more wardrobe space for a full collection of adult-sized clothes.

I know plenty of people whose "master bedroom" is not the biggest bedroom in the house if that helps 🤷

By the time you add the bed, their wardrobes, books, desk, my kids need more space than we do.

And I see nothing wrong in not having toys spread all over the house but kept in their own room.

Do what you want, I just don't understand the mindset of rooms based on earnings.

Hopingformydb · 02/02/2021 13:46

Depends on how many kids you have if you have.. we currently have the master and DD had 2nd largest room however she has been moved to smaller room her choice she didn't like having a big bedroom for some reason but it makes sense as we want baby no 2 and they will have more toys etc DD is 9 now so she only interested in laptop/ xbox. I dont think it matters which room as long as everyone had enough space

Fifthtimelucky · 02/02/2021 13:47

If there are two children sharing, giving them the biggest room might make sense, but otherwise parents should have it, especially if there are two parents.

The parents are likely to have more clothes so will need more wardrobe space.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 02/02/2021 13:47

My ddog has the master bedroom and sleeps like a starfish in the middle of the bed-occasionally kicking a usurper.

She allows DH and I to cling to the edges on either side of the bed.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/02/2021 13:49

Lazylinguist

I don't know anyone who gives a child the master bedroom either. But then everyone I know has an ensuite off the master bedroom which makes it more obvious that the parents get it.

Wellthatwassilly · 02/02/2021 13:49

My 2 ds 14 and 11 have the master bedroom. I have the middle size bedroom and my dd (2) has the smallest

AngelicInnocent · 02/02/2021 13:50

We have bedroom 1. DC used to have 3 and 4 with bedroom 2 as a playroom but as teenagers they asked if DD could have bedroom 2 (absolutely massive) and DS kept bedroom 3 with bedroom 4 as his computer room.

Devlesko · 02/02/2021 13:51

Me and dh have always had the master bedroom but also have another the same size and 2 med sized.

mootymoo · 02/02/2021 13:51

I've always had the master bedroom. New house has en-suite so definitely want it

copernicium · 02/02/2021 13:52

I have an entire floor Grin. And because it's the loft conversion, it's fully sound proofed too. I highly recommend it GrinGrinGrin

mootymoo · 02/02/2021 13:53

All our bedrooms are similar sized (apart from en-suite) still remains to be seen who plans on being resident, DD's at university, only one currently at home

Ibeliveinyou · 02/02/2021 13:53

Me and my husband

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/02/2021 13:54

By the time you add the bed, their wardrobes, books, desk, my kids need more space than we do.

Do your kids have more clothes than you?! I find the opposite, my kids have far less possessions than I do and need a fraction of the storage. I have a king size bed, DS & DD have a singles.

The mindset of children having the largest or master bedroom seems to apply predominantly (on mn at least) where either a) children share a bedroom or b) theres no playroom or second reception room where children play and their toys are stored.

HappygoesLucy · 02/02/2021 13:55

I grew up sharing the master with my sister as we were close in age. Parents had the next room which was a decent size (wall of fitted wardrobes plus space for king size bed with 2 bedside tables and a dressing table opposite wardrobes) the smallest room was a box room so just had a single bed and a chest of drawers. I moved out at 18 and Dsis stayed in the master as parents were happy with their room. They had the best view and barely spent any time in their room.

BF and I have a 4 bed and the master has an en suite so I doubt we'd move rooms if we have kiddos.

ForestYeti · 02/02/2021 13:56

My daughters have the biggest room as they need more room with them sharing

Puffinhead · 02/02/2021 13:56

My DDs used to share the master bedroom in our old house and we had a smaller room - they needed the space more than us and it worked really well.

PickAChew · 02/02/2021 13:56

Dh and I do. It's the only room big enough for our king-size bed plus (just about adequate) clothes storage. The boys both have small doubles, ds1's bigger than ds2's with a lot more head room, so we have a pax wardrobe in there for storage of bedding and odds and ends as we have no storage on the landing.

AStudyinPink · 02/02/2021 13:57

I agree that the people who own the house get the master bedroom, except in extenuating circumstances, or where there’s little difference between the room sizes. My children will have (God willing) sixty or seventy years of owning their own homes and choosing their own rooms when they move out.
