The Incel Movement (TW)

NC. Wasn't sure if this was right board (was debating putting it on Feminism) but hopefully this is fine.

Has anyone heard about this Incel movement? I had heard the odd thing about it, but I've been reading a forum on another site - don't want to link it or I might get the post deleted - and the things that have been said have been fucking abysmal.

(Trigger warning here) An example being: "Females only have one worth and it's making babies. If a foid [female humanoid, used to indicate that women are subhuman] can't give birth, she's nothing more than a fleshlight".

For anyone who wants a bit of a TL;DR, Incels, a portmanteau of "involuntary celibates", are members of an online subculture who define themselves as unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one.

Not read many incel-specific threads on here, but to be honest it's really boiled my piss. Hope I've done the right things with the trigger warnings, wanted to start a conversation around this but hoping not to upset anyone!

I think teenage boys often go through this stage - certainly I can remember boys like this in my early teens, who insisted women were subhuman and only existed to make babies (it was always extremely satisfying to wipe the floor with them in tests, then ask them why they weren’t even capable of beating a girl).

The ones I knew grew out of it, because everyone around them, other boys and male teachers included, told them they were being a knob. The ones today have their views amplified by the fucking internet, and they turn into Proud Boys.
@SkedaddIe yes you are wrong. Hope that helps.
No it didn't

SkedaddIe · 01/02/2021 20:04

But thank you @FOJN your explanation makes perfect sense and I stand corrected and educated

SkedaddIe · 01/02/2021 20:25

And sorry for the derail the incel thing was news a few years ago fizzled out, or so I thought, but then started to recently get back onto media via the platforms shared by right wing groups.

The incel thing is very dangerous and worrying prevalent in younger groups. I try to teach my nephews and the boys I've mentored to focus on themselves and respect themselves, they can't respect women if they don't respect themselves.

Treating women like a prize isn't valuing, its objectification. You cannot win a person, it's impossible, so the Chad vs Incel path has only losers. Both are men who never get the emotional benefit of companionship.

My mantra on this is respect yourself, share yourself and be open to a partner who is willing to do the same.

@Blakes77

Teenage boys are likely to be getting info from the internet and a search like "why cant I get a girl" can easily take you to incel sites that propagate bullshit psychobabble like the ladder theory. So true. They also see a lot of shit about feminists. My own teen told me that lots of feminists post on tik tok or whatever about how they want all men dead..I pointed out that anyone can post anything on the internet. You would think this generation would know what a troll is, but they don't seem to recognise it.
I have had exactly this conversation with my own teen.

I think they're agent provocateurs but it can be very hard to get a gullible 13 year old to see this.

Completely agree OP is a terrifying movement full of such visceral hatred and misogyny it's staggering. As other have said, so much crossover with the equally disgusting PUA movement, TRAs, the far right and Trump's rabid base, and absolutely can lead to radicalisation and violence. Grim.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 01/02/2021 21:12

One of the "good" thing about incels is they do tend to have a short lifespan. Problem is when they decide to take people with them when they take the step, and they do sometimes.

Plus the fact they do'nt usually breed (or attempt to).
Nunoftheother · 01/02/2021 23:37

I've been out with several men who I suspect would concur with aspects of incel beliefs, but who managed to hide their misogyny well enough to have a short-lived "relationship".

Elliott Rodger is apparently hailed as a hero by these groups and the Canada shooting was directly referenced to have been inspired by him.

Yes, these men call him "the Supreme Gentleman" and the guy in Canada used that term just before he did it IIRC.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/02/2021 00:18

I had heard if this Incel thing, but didn't know how crazy it was, would someone really want to identify as one of these ppl? Why not work on yourself?

They consider they are working on themselves. Read Rodger's "manifesto" that he wrote before he went on his spree.

DitzyFakeBlonde · 02/02/2021 00:51

HRTWT but first read about them after the Elliot Rodger killings. Have seen the forums OP and it’s shocking, very extreme, they refer to men and women as Chads and Staceys I think.

Watched Elliots YouTube videos at the time and he was a very disturbed young man. Convinced that because of his dual heritage, women wouldn’t date him. At some points I almost felt sorry for him and remember thinking how pointless and heartbreaking his rampage was. He seemed to have an odd sense of grandiose and entitlement about him and believed in an odd social hierarchy. I don’t think they’re all born out of misogyny, get the impression some of them have extreme self esteem issues, were likely bullied, suffered humiliation, rejection and through perceived acceptance got sucked down a rabbit hole with these groups, like an early PP mentioned. It’s a very scary movement.

We always encourage our children to be kind and include everyone.

Latest example of radicalisation of 13 Cornish boy who’s in court on charges of terrorism.
