Aibu:To want to buy a tin opener that works

Hmmmm2018 · 31/01/2021 22:06

I appreciate there are many more worrying issues at the moment, but having had our cheap old tin opener for over a decade during which it successfully did it's job of opening tins, AIBU to be fed up that after buying three replacements not one of them can actually do the job of opening a tin, without some extra effort or wiggling or just not do it. Have tried expensive, have tried cheap but neither have actually been any good at opening tins!

This thread is quite old, but if you’ve landed here looking for advice on what kitchen tools to buy, we’ve recently updated our best can opener guide with loads of Mumsnetter-approved products, including both manual and electric options. We hope it’s helpful.

The manual tin opener is £1 in Asda. Have you tried that?

SadderThanEeyore · 31/01/2021 22:09

Oxo good grips one has been great.

CCSS15 · 31/01/2021 22:13

Oxo good grips here too - only got it recently and it has been life changing! (Too long in lockdown I think)

Hmmmm2018 · 31/01/2021 22:14

I tried an Oxo one at some point as have liked other oxo things and it broke quite quickly. Have tried a cheap as chips supermarket one that looked like our old one but just doesn't work, not tried an asda one but will look into that!

Ffs. Link didnt work. Lantana safety tin opener. Makes lovely rounded edge.

PotterHead1985 · 31/01/2021 22:19

I struggle massively with our regular tin opener. A, because I'm left handed but mostly B, because due to reasons my right hand doesn't work properly. I had two electric ones, but they don't seem to last.

I solved this problem by only buying tins with ring pull things on them.

StopCryingYourHeartOut · 31/01/2021 22:20

I agree with the culinare magican.
Think we got it off amazon. Superb.

youkiddingme · 31/01/2021 22:21

No, they are rubbish now. Mine used to last me years and years. Now I'm lucky if I get a year out of one, some of them barely work at all. Even the Cullinare magican - used to last ten years or more, last one lasted just over a year. Technically I could return it for a refund, but I haven't been in a shop since last March, so I just had to order another online. Which is already not as efficient as it should be.

SunSparkle · 31/01/2021 22:22

I have this OXO one and so far it's been going strong for 5 years.

SunSparkle · 31/01/2021 22:22

oops, forgot the link: www.amazon.co.uk/OXO-Good-Grips-Handled-Opener/dp/B00004OCJW?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/01/2021 22:23

Oxo good grips is the best one I have ever used.

1vandal2 · 31/01/2021 22:24

Magican all the way. Available in most supermarkets

BananaPie · 31/01/2021 22:26

I got this one on Amazon a year ago after going through loads of fancier ones. It’s not failed yet.

@whydoyouhateclocks

I solved this problem by only buying tins with ring pull things on them.
That sounds like a sensible solution!

Magican!!
Used to have about 5-6 random tin openers that never worked properly and now I only use magican!

MadameMinimes · 31/01/2021 22:35

I have the Nogent Super Kim and I can’t recommend it enough. It takes up practically no space in a drawer and once you’ve used one suddenly the usual style of can opener makes no sense. Why do they even have handles? What is the point? The Super Kim just locks itself onto the tin as you turn the handle.

Cecillie · 31/01/2021 22:36

We bought an expensive bottle opener from Amazon after being fed up of cheap ones breaking , fecking thing takes a chip out of the glass rim when you use it Sad

jay55 · 31/01/2021 22:36

As a kid we had one that was fixed to the wall and it was brilliant. Nothing has ever matched up.
