Aibu:To want to buy a tin opener that works

I appreciate there are many more worrying issues at the moment, but having had our cheap old tin opener for over a decade during which it successfully did it's job of opening tins, AIBU to be fed up that after buying three replacements not one of them can actually do the job of opening a tin, without some extra effort or wiggling or just not do it. Have tried expensive, have tried cheap but neither have actually been any good at opening tins!

This thread is quite old, but if you’ve landed here looking for advice on what kitchen tools to buy, we’ve recently updated our best can opener guide with loads of Mumsnetter-approved products, including both manual and electric options. We hope it’s helpful.

I struggle to use a lot of the ones with handles and turning bits, the basic metal ones are the worst.

I currently use the Joseph Joseph can-do and it's great for my hands but I don't like that it takes the whole top off instead of the inside bit of the top, it makes the can much wobblier to hold afterwards.

Magican here, I’m a leftie and it’s good. Might leave a sharp edge, but it’s easy.

@jay55

As a kid we had one that was fixed to the wall and it was brilliant. Nothing has ever matched up.

Those were fancy, a school friend had one back in the days

We have the katana one, a replacement for the pampered chef one which lasted about 8 years and was a similar 'safety' one. I just love that it works with the design of the can, instead of ripping into it, and the safety cut is a massive bonus.

So I reckon I need to look into the magician or lantana, and maybe then life will be a little bit better!

Pampered Chef ones are great if you can get hold of one as they leave no sharp edges.

Another vote for the Magican. Works really well and is very easy to use.

I've had my Oxo Good Grips can opener for about 10 years and it's never let me down. It's far and away the best one that I've ever used.

Had an electric one for years. Best purchase ever.

Thank God it's not just me! I am much nearer 60 than 50 and for most of my life I have been opening tins quite easily thank you very much. But for the last few years I have, like you, found most tin openers are utter crap. Buy a cheapie? Crap. Spend more for a "good" one? Still crap.

How can this be? Surely this was a solved technology. Tin openers used to work.

I may follow some of the recommendations on this thread. However here is a thought. Could tins have changed and the makers of tin openers have not kept up? How would we find out?

Kitchencraft £3.99 after stupidly expensive ones. Just opens the tin with no bother!

@BananaPie

I got this one on Amazon a year ago after going through loads of fancier ones. It’s not failed yet.

These are the only ones that seem to work even if slightly awkward.

I gave the same problem with garlic crushers - my original basic one lasted years, not the either don't crush or the handles bend and snap.

Can anyone recommend an electric one? I have issues with grip/strength and that would be great.

I recently bought this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07FVSQBWJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?psc=1&ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 one touch and it takes the lid off. And there are no sharp edges so I can clean the can for recycling without cutting myself.

I've always had better results from the basic butterfly openers, with a cutting blade and one wheel, rather than the sort with two wheels. Try and get one that's all metal, not with weak plastic parts. They do take a bit of force though, so not so good if you've got infirm hands.

I've used oxo good grips ones for. Years. Only replaced the old one because it went rusty. They've changed the materials and the more recent one is lasting just as well but not rusting. I find it easy to use with my dodgy hands, too.

Though I miss the old wall mounted ones.

I like the Ikea Stam one. I find the type that cuts off the entire top of the can more reliable than the style that only takes off the lid.

I don't have good co-ordination, but I can manage that fine (though it takes a bit of getting used to if you have only used the other type before).
