Neighbour and goat AIBU?

203 replies

Reggit99 · 31/01/2021 08:56

Help please! AIBU?????

We have neighbours who are perfectly fine normally. They moved here before covid so early 2020 I met them a few times then, all seemed fine. They were nice to my husband, they incited us for coffee but we Haven’t been because of covid.

About six months ago, they appeared to purchase a goat. At least we assume they did as it suddenly appeared in their garden. After a shot while, they obviously got another as there were two. They seem to be kept in the back garden, no pen or anything, they just roam the garden.

This hasn’t been a big problem until now. We are being woken up often before 7am by the noose these animals make, additionally the neighbours garden is becoming a mess. We are potentially thinking about the possibility of moving and we do not want there to be any issues, I think this would put off perspective buyers.

We haven’t approached the neighbours yet, because we haven’t seen them for a while and they refused to join the street whatsapp. I want them to get rid of these goats but I’m really not sure what to do!

@FreezerBird

they pee on their own beards as a warning to other male goats.
ENORMOUS willies, flexible spines.

@SirVixofVixHall

Lola i think worse. We have a nice village facebook, but the street Whatsapp is all about reaching out and being kind, from the man who goes nuclear if someone parks in his place..
It's always the same - the worst offenders are the ones who want everyone else to play nicely.

This is a most excellent thread.

GappyValley · 31/01/2021 12:24

We have a street whatsapp group
It’s 95% people asking for recommendations for tradespeople/Internet providers/dentists, and 5% incandescent rage when someone with a non-electric car parks in the on-street charging bays.
Heady stuff

I had a pet goat growing up
My siblings and I used to put on a bike helmet and have headbutting sessions with him
None of us had a distinguished academic record
The two things might be related

You aren't kidding.
joystir59 · 31/01/2021 12:26

Goat urine really smells bad. Unless they gave a really big garden you are going to find the mess and smell annoying. Also they need a shelter to sleep in to protect them from the elements- is there one?

Batmanandbobbin · 31/01/2021 12:27

I only said YABU because I really want a goat!! But I won’t get one (actually two, I know I need two) until we have a huge garden and they won’t bother the neighbours. So YanACTUALLYbu. I just really want a goat.

TheFuckingDogs · 31/01/2021 12:27

Aww I’d love my neighbours to get goats! Lighten up OP - it’s not like they’re smuggling heroin next door

That's it. I'm done, this thread is brilliant.

@NorthLondonFarmer

Some pictures
Is it legal to have that many goats in your garden? We live in an area with covenants.
BaronessBomburst · 31/01/2021 12:38

Is the OP coming back with photos?

Witchend · 31/01/2021 12:42

Anyone else reading this thread and wondering about getting a goat. It would probably be easier than asking dh to mow the lawn anyway. Grin

oakleaffy · 31/01/2021 12:44

My friend kept two female goats as pets in a large garden on East Sheen... plus two horses.
No issues - or weren’t back then- but in a suburban garden one needs to be meticulously clean regarding manure.
A small area will get wrecked very fast, unless maintained on a daily basis.

Littleposh · 31/01/2021 12:44

Environmental health/animal welfare people, would they help you??

Changesareafoot · 31/01/2021 12:45

I love goats and used to own a fair few myself. You need a CPH number for them so if they don’t have that they shouldn’t have the goats

Better than geese. We had geese at one point to keep the grass clipped. Vile massive greasy goose shit everywhere.
TheQueef · 31/01/2021 12:47

@ImsorryWilson

“There are rules! There has to be a minimum amount of space and they need a shelter/shed/barn, again with a minimum area”

Bloody nanny state.....

Oh bravo!
DenisetheMenace · 31/01/2021 12:47

Really like goats, not sure I’d like to be woken up by them at dawn though.
That aside, you can’t dictate that your neighbours keep their garden “tidy”.

The RSPB employs a man specifically to patrol round the lake here all day in goose season, scraping it all up.
Often wondered what his title is 😁

Covidcorvid · 31/01/2021 12:51

@Gobbycop

We keep sheep.

There are strict rules concerning movement, welfare, keeping records of medication.

You don't just aquire livestock and live happily ever after.

I doubt you can even get a cph number on a back garden.

I think you can. There’s a woman whose videos I see on tiktok. She lives in a semi with an average garden and 5 goats in it. She’s said they have cph numbers. She’s built them a big structure with platform things for them to climb on. I was hoping the OP here was going to be the neighbours. 😁
SirVixofVixHall · 31/01/2021 12:52

FreezerBird I long for geese.

TicTac80 · 31/01/2021 12:54

We used to have Saanen goats when I was young (but my folks had a large property, with a large amount of land). We loved them, but they're crafty gits! AFAIK, you need the correct paperwork to keep goats. I'd be amazed that they neighbours have been allowed to keep goats in a back garden!!

oakleaffy · 31/01/2021 12:54

Re animals in suburban gardens.. Our old landlady kept Indian Runner ducks...
They gave her the run around at dusk when she was attempting to herd them into a cozy fox proof shelter... it was like trying to nail jelly to a wall.. she’d be closing the door and one would escape causing the others to follow like mercury.
Geese are fabulous alarm systems though, but a LOT of space is needed.

withmycoffee · 31/01/2021 12:56

@Reggit99

So by the sounds of it they are illegally acquiring these goats? I wouldn’t even know where to start to go buy one!

It really brings the whole area down, that particular house is a two bed and has had problem tenants in the past. Hmm

What make you think that they are illegally acquired? It is very easy to purchase goats. It's the keeping of them that may be illegal.
