Neighbour and goat AIBU?

Reggit99 · 31/01/2021 08:56

Help please! AIBU?????

We have neighbours who are perfectly fine normally. They moved here before covid so early 2020 I met them a few times then, all seemed fine. They were nice to my husband, they incited us for coffee but we Haven’t been because of covid.

About six months ago, they appeared to purchase a goat. At least we assume they did as it suddenly appeared in their garden. After a shot while, they obviously got another as there were two. They seem to be kept in the back garden, no pen or anything, they just roam the garden.

This hasn’t been a big problem until now. We are being woken up often before 7am by the noose these animals make, additionally the neighbours garden is becoming a mess. We are potentially thinking about the possibility of moving and we do not want there to be any issues, I think this would put off perspective buyers.

We haven’t approached the neighbours yet, because we haven’t seen them for a while and they refused to join the street whatsapp. I want them to get rid of these goats but I’m really not sure what to do!

@peak2021

Check was is required for keeping goats first. Perhaps via the local council.
Or local WhatsApp group!
ProfYaffle · 31/01/2021 10:55

"Would Margot and Jerry participate in the street WhatsApp though? I'm not convinced."

Surely Margot would run the fucking thing - issuing diktats to the neighbourhood about acceptable mowing schedules for front lawns and the like.

LolaSmiles · 31/01/2021 10:58

YANBU to be concerned about the impact when selling your house. Many people would be put off by the neighbours keeping livestock in their garden, especially if they are noisy.
YANBU if you wanted to check the goats were properly recorded and meeting relevant requirements.

YABU to object if the neighbours have everything in order and they are allowed to have the goats.

Our neighbourhood WhatsApp group got very aerated last summer over the volume of the ice-cream van's chimes.

It was thrilling.

"Bringing the area down" Grin

I'd love pygmy goats but our garden isnt big enough, if they were looking after them I wouldn't care tbh.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 31/01/2021 11:06

I would be concerned about slaughter though.

Honeyroar · 31/01/2021 11:07

Lol we have an area WhatsApp group. We’re pretty rural.

You need a small holding number for goats. I used to love goats until someone that kept their horse with us asked to bring their goats. They were little sods. No wonder they use them as the symbol for the devil! They destroyed 15 trees, ate my horse’s tail, got out on the lane regularly, made a mess. I certainly wouldn’t want them in an urban garden!

Missing point of thread, but i will share my goat owning story.
I was the owner of a goat for a short period - he followed me home when I was walking the dog. He must have been dumped as nobody seemed to own him. We had to rehome him as he was a master escaper. He was on borrowed time when he started sleeping on top of next door's tumble dryer and the breaking point came when he got into my husband's jeep and ate a pile of euro( my husband had just sold a vintage tractor). Goats are not mentioned in our house.

mantlepiece · 31/01/2021 11:12

OP are your neighbours Greek?
They could be fattening them up for the Easter spit roast.

mylovelydd · 31/01/2021 11:14

What does a neighbour having goats have anything to do with anyone else ffs Hmm?
It's none of your business OP. Why can't people mind their business any more? It's like life isn't restricted enough. Just let them be

EvilPea · 31/01/2021 11:18

I fucking love goats And sheep. I’d be more inclined to move into your house.

Doesn’t help your noise issue which honestly is only going to get worse as mornings get lighter earlier.
Your going to have to talk to them

Have you ever heard or smelt a goat?! Grin If the OP can hear or smell them then she has every right to complain! Also, if they are being mistreated, surely you wouldn't want her to mind her own business? Would you say the same if it was a constantly barking dog that was kept on a chain outside in the bad weather or is it because they are "just" goats that you think she should mind her own business?

Until the OP comes back and gives us more information it's hard to tell either way really!

LolaSmiles · 31/01/2021 11:22

If they aren't kept in line with requirements or are a noise nuisance then it is other people's business.

If they are being kept in line with requirements and aren't a noise nuisance then it's nobody's business, but it is understandable to accept that some buyers would be put off buying a house if the garden next door looks like a goat farm.

OldPervsWithNoFannyOfTheirOwn · 31/01/2021 11:24

Grin MissBaskin after all the weird happenings in 2020, the govt finally getting around to the free goat roll out is a good start to 2021

Mainly surprised, like PP, that they are both still in the garden though - hard to pin down a good goat 😂

truthisalie · 31/01/2021 11:27

I would be concerned about slaughter though.

Is it not allowed to slaughter chickens, ducks or other livestock at home?

Just curious.

Ikora · 31/01/2021 11:29

Goats smell absolutely awful unless in a curry.

ImsorryWilson · 31/01/2021 11:29

It’s all a bit meh.....

SirVixofVixHall · 31/01/2021 11:30

Billy goats are very stinky. Nanny goats are not particularly smelly.

ImsorryWilson · 31/01/2021 11:31

....And it would probably get my goat after a while....

truthisalie · 31/01/2021 11:31

As to the smell, castrated males and all females don't stink. Sure there is some smell, same as any animal has some kind of odour, but it's not extremely strong or offensive. And after 5.5 years, I've never had any complaints.

Goats poop like rabbits and generally are very tidy animals. They are smart and very playful. The grazing is the main concern. They don't even meh that much. No more than a dog barking.
