I was so Remain, I was devastated when we left. But the EU trying to steal our vac and casually invoking Article 16 has really left me aghast. I can't believe they are lashing out this way, I don't understand why.

OP posts:
HeyHeyImABeLeaver · 30/01/2021 23:49

Listening Johnson may have talked of invoking article 16, the difference is he didn't do it and he certainly wouldn't have done it in the heat of the moment by 'mistake'.

Couple of comments from UVDL from last year:

A hard border in Ireland will “never, ever” come back as a result of Brexit, the new president of the European Commission has said.
Ursula von der Leyen said the protocol on Northern Ireland that forms part of the UK’s EU withdrawal agreement “makes sure that a hard border will never, ever come back again”
“Neither physically nor mentally,” she said.

..........Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland is essential to protect peace and stability on the island & integrity of the single market

So she/someone in the EU invokes article 16 which does just that and with no discussion with any of the affected parties.

That's quite some blip.

@UnityUnited

I can’t believe the hypocrisy I am reading on this thread.
It’s only hypocrisy if it’s the same people making opposing posts.
Avondklok · 30/01/2021 23:50

I'm not palming it off. It was a bad thing but retracted hours later. It has had no actual effect on anything apart from hyperbole on MN. It was limited to vaccine only and Boris had threatened the same last week but no one noticed.

Its has been noticed but it was also on response to a direct question as opposed tO being said direct to uk.
Not sure if he can even trigger it tbf on his own?

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 23:53

So yes, to change from remain to leave because of one singular act is utterly stupid.

The vaccination management is a fuck up.
Germany securing their own additional doses is questionable.
Germany stopping PPE going to Italy is unforgivable.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 23:55

It has had no actual effect on anything apart

You're downplaying & minimising it.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 30/01/2021 23:56

@Suzeyshoes

Boris Johnson and his government have acted massive twats the whole way through the negotiation process. He broke the law on several occasions. The EU didn’t. Sounds like a bit of ‘we can act like shits but they can’t’ to me.

The EU has acted with such utter class in comparison, until now.
Honestly, I think they’re allowed a moment’s weakness, especially if it means maintaining the aim of the EU. ie, to protect its own.

So yes, to change from remain to leave because of one singular act is utterly stupid.

What the EU were doing isn't utter class though. They have acted like a tantruming child. All to try and divert the blame of some slow and bad vaccine negotiations.

That is why some posters have been questioning their past support of the EU. That is also why some EU citizens and newspapers are questioning their membership of the EU.

Apparently the head honcho may find herself drowned very soon. Germany are not at all happy and they hold a lot of clout.

UnityUnited · 30/01/2021 23:58

@Iggly I know what hypocrisy means and I have seen plenty of it on this thread.

marbellamarc · 31/01/2021 00:00

It's fecking nonsense to pretend the EU are class personified & always behave impeccably.
You'd know that if you lived in an European country or had family there.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 31/01/2021 00:01

Anyway it looks like eu and uk goverment have drawn a line under it now as such, its Upto eu members how they react to this and what they do going forward.
And a lesson to uk of what can happen etc .
Both sides I am sure will think of implications.
Remain or leave we are out of eu now and need to move on.
I hope for all europeans that az can get vaccines quicker and pfizer etc and that for all of us these new vaccines get approved and we can all get quickly and start getting them around the world .
Ultimately when it comes to covid we all want the same thing .

Mishna · 31/01/2021 00:02

Yes, there seem to be a lot of posters with grudges towards the UK and the disingenuous hypocrisy is interesting to read.

We all know it's frankly impossible for this to have been a "blip": protocol, hierarchy and process are the beating heart of the EU.

I'm not sure how they thought this would work as a threat though, as it's so overreaching they would never have been able to see it through.

Any surplus vaccines should not be sent to the Republic of Ireland. There was a very sad piece in the Guardian the other day about Moldova, a country that has barely any vaccines. We should send our surplus there. Ireland is no great friend to the UK, that romanticised relationship very much runs one way, and Ireland has pegged its fortune to the EU, as demonstrated by the meek statements to come out of Dublin today. Let Ireland and the rest of the EU, a wealthy trading bloc, solve their own vaccine issues - although today will no doubt have cast a faint unease across the ROI political class. It's not pleasant to have seen the mask slip. Once again Ireland finds itself in a position of subservience to a union that won't hesitate to use it as a pawn.

And France not fulfilling our NHS contract for PPE (masks).

There's that solidarity again

marbellamarc · 31/01/2021 00:06

Did the WHO make a statement on sharing PPE in order to reduce deaths?

Mishna · 31/01/2021 00:06

Here's the article if anyone's interested.
"Here in Europe's poorest country we have no vaccine to argue over."

Under the "Ireland issue" perhaps, but I'm not aware they've changed tack on the threats around blocking vaccine exports ...

Ok wasn't aware of that just that gove said it won't affect our programme , ??

Suzeyshoes · 31/01/2021 00:10

@truly

Let’s compare that to the numerous numerous occasions Johnson has broken the law, gone back on his word, insulted minorities, made dodgy deals with Russians, cheated on his wives, forgotten his children, withdrawn food from the poor. Don’t even dare pretend he is faultless. His shitty brexit deal cut off Northern Ireland in the first place.
The EU signed a deal for vaccines. Shared their production space with the world and got nothing back. The whole point of the EU is to protect its members. So good on them for doing their best to get what they signed a contract for, even if it hinders their nasty neighbours. Johnson wouldn’t hesitate to do much worse.

As for ‘slow and bad vaccine negotiations’, its utterly risible to find people analysing medicine negotiations as if they have a clue what has gone on. You only know what you’ve read in the right wing media. The uk authorities were basically told to skip steps of the AZ drug approval just to get one up on the EU. Absolutely pathetic.

Suzeyshoes · 31/01/2021 00:11

@marbellamarc
Lol. I’m half french.

marbellamarc · 31/01/2021 00:11

@Mishna that's really sad. I am
unfortunately a little ignorant to what is happening there. Does the EU have a programme to help out other European countries?

marbellamarc · 31/01/2021 00:12

Lol. I’m half french

And?

marbellamarc · 31/01/2021 00:14

So good on them for doing their best to get what they signed a contract for, even if it hinders their nasty neighbours

Is there now clarification around the contracts. As far as I can tell only litigation will solve it but if you know more please share?

marbellamarc · 31/01/2021 00:15

The whole point of the EU is to protect its members.

They are failing on this hence my criticism.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 31/01/2021 00:16

The whole point of the EU is to protect its members

I imagine the Greeks, Moldovans and Irish might have a different view about that, and they're just three nations off the top of my head

Seems to me the whole point of the EU is to protect their manic project and the Commission, though I agree about Boris ... I wouldn't have thought there are many left who need educating about HIS behaviour

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 31/01/2021 00:16

@Suzeyshoes and where do you have your proof that the uk were told to skip steps to have one up on the eu ? Uk not only country to of approved it before the eu
Not many are defending boris here and I always find it strange when people refer to how many wifes he has had , he could of had 100 for all I care.
