I was so Remain, I was devastated when we left. But the EU trying to steal our vac and casually invoking Article 16 has really left me aghast. I can't believe they are lashing out this way, I don't understand why.

"and leave this shower of shite govt in complete control of our environmental and food regulations and workers rights is just desperate and sad."

But this shower of shite government exceeds all the eu regulations on those?

No one is force feeding animals in the uk

rorosemary · 30/01/2021 13:15

Can I just say as an EU citizen that many of us don't agree with the EU turning against the UK on this matter? If there is a problem with AstraZeneca (IF, the contract isn't that clear to me on that point) they should take it up with the company, not make it about one of the other customers and telling that customer to hand their merchandise in.

I really think it should have been handled better.

Tobleronehouses · 30/01/2021 13:15

I think when time has moved on a bit, and people stop reading the more hyperbolic headlines in the red tops, we will all come to remember that this is a global pandemic and one country getting the vaccine ahead of everyone does not put a stop to global spread. We are all inter-dependent. In order for the UK to recover and thrive we need all countries to recover and thrive.

The acquisition of vaccines isn't a willy waving competition - happy to be corrected but I think every vaccine has come about as a result of international cooperation - the problems that a global pandemic throws up, should not be countered by a "one man for himself" response.

Hammonds · 30/01/2021 13:15

Yes, the EU have done badly with the vaccine and triggering article 16 was a bad move. It is however a move that was rescinded immediately because member state Ireland said 'no' ... because member states can stand up to the rest of the EU and get what they want. As could we before we decided to leave

No way was it down to that. It was down to the world turning its head and seeing them for what they are. It’s too late and even though they retracted it - it can’t be unseen. They tried to punish because of their fuck up. That’s not supposed to be the reason they are there.

DdraigGoch · 30/01/2021 13:18

France, Germany and several other European countries have also issued emergency permits. This has nothing to do with Brexit.

There's a pest which is causing swathes of damage to the sugar beet crop this year. Sugar beet does not flower so there won't be many bees there anyway.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 30/01/2021 13:20

Well, the EU Commission doesn’t have to give a shiny shite what EU citizens feel, as EU citizens have very little direct influence over the Commission. The wrath of EU citizens, such as it is, will ultimately be directed against the national governments.

The French presidential race is the one to watch.

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 30/01/2021 13:21

Arf at Ireland saying No! 🛑

''they' 'the shadowy Owellian Commission, didn't give Ireland any warning or consultation or anything before making this hideous move...

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:22

Surely though had the Eu ordered far earlier, the amount of vaccine would still be same now?
Just that we would have had less and them more?

I'm not sure that's true. The EU hasn't ordered as many different ones have they? Besides it's still flippant to say people will be over it in 2 wks is it not?

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:23

and people will die because they haven't got a vaccine won't they?

Suamino · 30/01/2021 13:23

@Hammonds

No way was it down to that. It was down to the world turning its head and seeing them for what they are. It’s too late and even though they retracted it - it can’t be unseen. They tried to punish because of their fuck up. That’s not supposed to be the reason they are there.

Exactly. Even more painful to the EU powers is the fact that their own citizens are seeing them for who they are. The people of Europe are asking angry questions - as they should be. And what do these power-hungry bureaucrats do to defend themselves? Trample roughshod over Irish sensitivities and a carefully managed agreement almost as though they don't give a shiny shit about anyone but themselves.................oh wait

zoemum2006 · 30/01/2021 13:29

You should do some proper research and then you would understand what happened.

Otherwise you look a dodgy Brexiteer sock puppet finally happy there is something to distract from the utter * mess of Brexit.

Floppywin · 30/01/2021 13:30

If they’d ordered earlier they would be where we are now they would have smoothed our production problems and started supply lines.

Although they wouldn’t in fact, as the EU would not be rolling it out at speed like we are and the French don’t like any vaccine and will have very low uptake.

Not to mention France and Germany don’t think it is suitable for over 60 now (Macron yesterday said that and called it pseudo effective etc ) hardly desperate for our vaccine - or are they? No-one can make sense of their childish behaviour.

whenwillsantagetvaccinated · 30/01/2021 13:31

Does anyone who is defending the EU on this thread genuinely believe that if the tables were reversed it would be helping us to secure more vaccine as a non-EU country? There is absolutely zero chance that they would not have taken the opportunity to show us what Brexit means. And I voted remain!

Genuinely, they are a disgrace.

Buddytheelf85 · 30/01/2021 13:32

The question on the ballot paper wasn’t ‘is the EU perfect in every way?’ Obviously the answer to that question is no and few remainers would argue otherwise because nothing is perfect.

The question was ‘should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?’ Is the UK better off inside a bloc that largely exists to serve its members’ interests, wielding a disproportionate amount of influence over its actions from the inside? Or is it better off outside that bloc - but quite literally existing on its fringes, affected by every one of its decisions with no say over them?

In other words - are you better off inside the tent pissing out, or outside the tent being pissed on?

I don’t approve of the actions of the EU over the last few days but I think it’s clearer than ever that we were far better off inside the tent pissing out.

HarrietPierce · 30/01/2021 13:32

Boris Johnson(13th January 2021) - "I can confirm that if there are problems that we believe are disproportionate, we will have no hesitation in invoking article 16." #PMQs

This doesn't seem to get mentioned much!

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:33

Fake news, fake news

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:33

people it's all fake news.

tttigress · 30/01/2021 13:34

Definitely think Macron has lost the plot, seems like a child having a tantrum.

zoemum2006 · 30/01/2021 13:35

@marbellamarc well I know for a start that A16 was never invoked. So when you have such a glaring error it's hard to take anything else very seriously.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:36

Does anyone who is defending the EU on this thread genuinely believe that if the tables were reversed it would be helping us to secure more vaccine as a non-EU country?

Unlikely judging by the response to Italy

Pinkfreesias · 30/01/2021 13:40

I was staunch remain and I would never call myself a Brexiteer, but I've been very disappointed with the EU's behaviour over the past few months. I thought better of them and they have let themselves and their citizens down. Juvenile petulance, sour grapes, lashing out, whatever you want to call it. Who wants to be associated with that?

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:41

Oh you mean the fact they backtracked after the backlash. No one has denied that.

Flatcokeisnojoke · 30/01/2021 13:42

As a European in the UK, I can’t quite believe what I saw

It was quite shocking and has me evaluate my view on the EU!

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 13:46

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has welcomed the European Commission’s decision not to invoke Article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol on Brexit.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin held multiple phone calls with Ms von der Leyen on Friday night in a bid to resolve the issue.
He tweeted: “Welcome decision by the European Commission tonight not to invoke the safeguard clause of the Ireland / Northern Ireland Protocol following constructive discussions with @vonderleye

Yep nothing happened. No idea what they had discussions about.
