To think that no instant hot chocolate is worth the calories

Just that really. I was heating up some milk to make some HC and DH said 'why not just make the instant? It's quicker and less messy?' I just think if I am going to drink it I might as well enjoy it, but was wondering if there are any delicious ones I am missing?

options options options
delicious 😋
but they are £4 a pot, but I wait until they are on offer for 2 and grab 10 tubs. Really is a life changer

On.Cub camp, we make jugs of Lidl hot choc on boiling water, adding about a third of cold milk to the jug (to cool it and have it tasty enough). That works ok.

But at home, I make it on milk, melting real choc in (good artisan chocolatier sells flaked choc for the purpose) and adding a dash of Baileys as the cooling agent. 😁

There was a blind taste testing on one of those Eat Well for Less programmes and the top choice came out as Asda light instant hot chocolate. It comes in a purple and turquoise packet and is gorgeous and cheap as chips. 42 calories a cup.

Greenknees · 29/01/2021 11:01

Oh I quite like them! I find one made with milk fills me up too much. Plus you can make them extra hot and melt lots of marshmallows in them. The orange options one made with a bit of milk in it is lovely

A trick i've found is when youre close to finishing nutella, scoop it out and put it in a mug with milk and microwave 😍

Greenknees · 29/01/2021 11:02

Although I will admit that melting 4 Lindt balls into a steaming hot mug of milk is completely amazing

mootymoo · 29/01/2021 11:03

Never liked them, watery. I make cocoa in a pan if I want a chocolatey drink - 100% cocoa, sugar and milk/water/milk substitute to taste

JesusAteMyHamster · 29/01/2021 11:05

I like the orange hot chocolate from options and Asda, value hot chocolate is seriously good and very chocolatey.

FlumpetCrumpet · 29/01/2021 11:06

@StrangerHereMyself

Not only are they not worth the calories, they’re not worth the hot water.
😂😂😂

I couldn't agree more! Life is short, get the proper stuff, make it with milk, and embrace the calories.

I discovered Whittard sticky toffee pudding white hot chocolate before christmas, it's delicious, highly recommend it

crosspelican · 29/01/2021 11:07

Nooo. I melt high % cocoa dark chocolate in a pan, mix a heaped teaspoon of cocoa powder and a level teaspoon of sugar (per person) with some milk into a paste, combine, bring to the boil.

That's how you get the lovely thick French style hot chocolate. I make it for the kids nearly every afternoon after school.

HolaChicos · 29/01/2021 11:08

I use Options Belgian hot choc. I add 1/4-1/3 of milk and the rest hot water, makes a huge difference if you add some milk and it's lovely!

picklemewalnuts · 29/01/2021 11:11

I make options with hot milk. I need the calcium. It's lovely!

Beautiful3 · 29/01/2021 11:11

I agree with you there. The original cadburys drinking chocolate powder mixed with milk, is the best. I always warm the milk first in my mug, in the microwave for 1 minute 20 seconds before mixing in the powder.

Etulosba · 29/01/2021 11:12

I can't stand any of it. Far too sweet for my palate.

I once watched Anthony Worral-Thompson dissolve two Mars bars, two bags of Maltesers, and half a pound of Dairy Milk into a mug of hot milk to make the 'ultimate' hot chocolate. Yuk!

harknesswitch · 29/01/2021 11:13

I drink the options as it's 40 calories a mug, but only to satisfy my sweet cravings in a nighttime otherwise I'm at the kids sweets

unbotheredbutbewildered · 29/01/2021 11:18

Hotel Chocolat hot choclate machine is amazing!

£99 for the machine. Sachets are super cheap and one mix does two people (It's SOOO luxurious). Heats the milk for you. Easy to clean etc.

longtompot · 29/01/2021 11:23

@Chimeraforce

This one is amazing. They also do a chilli one. The others are disappointing including options, maltesers etc
We liked that one but our Lidl no longer stocks it ☹️

I make Cadbury's hot chocolate, the one you make with hot water, but mixing the powder with some milk. It makes it just a bit creamier.

Trying93 · 29/01/2021 11:25

Green and black hot chocolate is the best I've tasted. You make it with milk, no water. It has alot of calories tho so not ideal if your into counting calories

FolkyFoxFace · 29/01/2021 11:28

I agree. I like real, thick hot chocolate that tastes like chocolate. That said, I do quite like Green & Blacks instant made with milk and a tad of sugar. That said, I wouldn't make even the crappiest of instant hot chocolate with water. DH does and it looks like dishwater. Envy (not envy)

Harmarsuperstar · 29/01/2021 11:30

He stopped all that palaver when he developed type 2 diabetes and heart disease, IIRC?
TwoZeroTwoZero · 29/01/2021 11:35

I agree. Instant hot chocolate is just rubbish, even when made with milk! The best hot chocolate in my opinion is made with real chocolate chips whisked in to warmed up milk and single cream until it melts.

abstractzebra · 29/01/2021 11:35

I usually get Options (the honeycomb one last time) but always make a paste with oat milk before adding hot water and it creams it up a bit.
Also, the instructions say to use 2 spoonfuls but not what size but it also says that it's 11g, so I weigh it and 11g is quite a lot of powder. I suspect a lot of people put too little in their mug, so it would taste watery.

TansyViolet · 29/01/2021 11:39

I like Options hot choc (as lower calorie) and also azera coffee, but I don't think I have a particular discerning palate. I did a wine appreciation course once for 2 terms, but I wasn't very good at identifying the wines and I'm currently working my way through a set of 9 whittards coffees from around the world. I can't tell any difference between them despite them being light roast, dark roast, medium roast and from Indonesia, Dominican republic, Kenya etc!
I guess it just depends what you like and how discerning a palate you have

CeibaTree · 29/01/2021 11:39

Instant hot chocolate just tastes like sugary water to me. I got a velvetiser for my birthday last year and wouldn't ever even bother trying an instant hot chocolate now!
