To think that no instant hot chocolate is worth the calories

Just that really. I was heating up some milk to make some HC and DH said 'why not just make the instant? It's quicker and less messy?' I just think if I am going to drink it I might as well enjoy it, but was wondering if there are any delicious ones I am missing?

I have never found an instant one that didn't taste watery. I had no idea I actually liked hot chocolate until I was given a proper one with made with milk.

LadyPoison · 29/01/2021 10:14

I have never found one. The taste of sweetener is paramount in most.

I always make my own from scratch so it isn't as sweet as the instant ones.

edwinbear · 29/01/2021 10:15

I like the 'Options' ones, but I make it like tea, with hot water and a bit of milk.

Yousexybugger · 29/01/2021 10:15

Agreed. Ive got a La Cafetiere pot for heating the milk and frothing on the stove. Not too much mess involved. Although as I'm on a diet, Options is better than nothing!

Lidl own brand is lovely as is Tesco own brand (neither are the low cal version- haven't tried those)

Worst I've tried is Morrison's own.

lurker101 · 29/01/2021 10:20

Agreed! I recently got a hotel chocolate velvetiser as a gift. Would definitely recommend it! Definitely not low calorie though.....

StrangerHereMyself · 29/01/2021 10:21

Not only are they not worth the calories, they’re not worth the hot water.

StrangerHereMyself · 29/01/2021 10:22

I make hot chocolate directly in the mug in the microwave. No additional washing up required.

WithinAForestDark · 29/01/2021 10:24

Sweet Freedom Choc Shot is what you want! I'm a recent convert - it's 13 cals a teaspoon (obvs not including the milk!) but tastes great with full or semi-skimmed milk and most important of all there's no disgusting artificial sweetener taste.

kale99 · 29/01/2021 10:29

Iv seen in a restaurant they crush up chocolate and pour hot milk on top then stir it could maybe try your fave chocolate?

tofuschnitzel · 29/01/2021 10:31

I always add a good glug of milk to instant hot chocolate, it is less watery that way. I don't know if there's some kind of shortage at the moment, but I haven't been able to get hot chocolate in my shopping for a few weeks. The shelf was completely bare in my local supermarket.

Chimeraforce · 29/01/2021 10:35

This one is amazing. They also do a chilli one. The others are disappointing including options, maltesers etc

Use the instant in milk microwaved it's amazing.
Angel2702 · 29/01/2021 10:37

I don’t actually like it made with milk. Only hot choc I really like is the options mint one.

Middle class panic buyin? :p
luxxlisbon · 29/01/2021 10:39

Instant hot chocolate is usually significantly less calories so it is comparing apples to oranges.

Youdonut · 29/01/2021 10:43

Well personally there's far more in life to worry about than the amount of calories in one cup of hot chocolate.

If you don't like instant, don't drink it. What is the issue?

ReggieKrait · 29/01/2021 10:43

The original Cadbury’s hot chocolate powder made with milk had always been good enough for me! I do add probably three times as much powder as you’re meant to but it’s much nicer like that.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/01/2021 10:45

That Lidl one looks good. I chop chocolate (either left over chocolate, because I don't really like it, or if I'm buying it myself, the 30 p a bar dark chocolate that most supermarkets sell) up in a blender and then use the milk frother in the coffee machine to make a hot choc. Squirt cream on if we've got some and add half a teaspoon of sugar.

I don't really do quicker or less messy when it comes to food and drink if the end result is inferior. But that depends what sort of instant he's talking about. Does he mean nasty sweetner filled horrors like Options, or nice chocolate powder?

ReggieKrait · 29/01/2021 10:45

Also really not fussed about the calories. If you’re going to have the odd treat do it properly and enjoy it.

Tier10 · 29/01/2021 10:46

I love galaxy and wispa in the little sachets. They are about 30p each. I add squirty cream and they are are so worth the calories.

Givethemback · 29/01/2021 10:47

No one ever believes me until I make them try it but the asda smart price hot chocolate is the nicest hot chocolate ever.

HugeAckmansWife · 29/01/2021 10:48

we get the low cal tescos one. Always mix it to a paste with cold milk then top up with hot wwater - really creamy and nice

fruitpastille · 29/01/2021 10:50

I don't like instant hot choc but the kids drink it with just a splash of milk because it's easier for them to do it themselves and doesn't use all the milk!

I'm quite enjoying those sachets of double choc mocha that Nescafe do in boxes though. They are completely full of sugar but nice for a change occasionally and easy to take to work.

RB68 · 29/01/2021 10:53

I like the galaxy one but another that adds a dash of milk usually (my excuse was always to get it to drinking temp. I don't use low calorie ones but I do actually put less in than they say 2 to 3 spoons not 4 plus
