AIBU to think it's weird to have a toilet in your bedroom?

My neighbours have put their house on the market recently so I had a nosey online and saw that they have a toilet in the bedroom Grin. A bath, sink and loo but no screening or bifold doors for privacy.
Even if there wasn't anyone in the room while you used it it's bloody odd isn't it?
I don't get it. Have seen it quite often on escape to the country/grand designs etc...
If you have one why? Confused

An ensuite yes, but not something that's open.

user127819 · 28/01/2021 18:51

I find a bedroom basin really useful but a toilet in the same room is too far!

We have an ensuite and have never had any issues with smell or steam. We have an extractor fan. So I don't quite get the issue there.

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel

I've stayed in a couple of hotels like that. I had to send DH out for a pint so I could have a shit Grin
Me too! I send DH out for a smoke Grin

Would love to see the house you are referring to OP. Never heard of having a toilet just sat unscreened in the bedroom. (I've seen baths like that).

Equally weird is the anti en suite stuff on here. I'd never move to a home without them. Don't have any noise or smell issues at all - modern toilets have silent air venting and quiet flushing. We have 3 en suites - also perfect for guests privacy etc.

I'd certainly not stay in a hotel if I had to go outside to the corridor to use the bathroom.

@IrmaFayLear

Grin of solidarity with those who also get “toilet nightmares” ! I have a recurring dream where I need the loo and it’s all open plan and only high-up washbasins to sit on.... it must mean something!
So do I, high up or cracked seats or the toilet is buried in a bed under loads of tucked in duvets Confused

I would want a screen of some sort; but I actually prefer an ensuite if there are others in the house; because I don't want everyone in the house knowing when I go to the loo, especially in the night. Due to some medical issues, I do go to the loo in the night more than some people, and I've had comments in the past which have left me very self-conscious on the subject.

FreyaFromTheFens · 28/01/2021 18:58

@YouKnowItsTrue

Is it like this?
Yes but that one has a pull across screen at least!

@JazzyGeoff

I wouldn't be able to use it, even with no one else there. My arse would get stage fright! My worst nightmares usually involve some kind of loo in full public view.
So glad it’s not just me 🤣 at best they have tiny doors.

My husband and I once stayed at a very trendy hotel in Manchester about four years ago. We were aghast at the shower and basin were in the bedroom. Only the toilet was behind a door ( with no lock.) the shower screen was completely clear.
I've been married for a long time but I found it bizarre. My husband and I have no problem with seeing what needs to be seen but we both felt a bit strange about this. Heaven knows how two friends would have felt about this, or a new couple. Seems to be the norm !

Oh it's already on Rightmove and you've told us all about it.
You're outed enough.

@Yohoheaveho

maybe they've both done time and they miss the camaraderie of hearing your cell mate take a shit in the middle of the night?

@Letsrunabath

I think the hate for ensuites is because some are squeezed into tiny bedrooms, so you hear every movement🤣🤣. Our en-suite is further away from our bed than our family bathroom.
So is ours. It is in a gable of the house that juts out, and the loo, sink and shower are round the corner. We also have an extractor fan and a window that always gets opened after use.

I think the mumsnetters who hate en suites just have selfish and thoughtless partners.

Wingedharpy · 28/01/2021 19:12

I refuse to have a toilet anywhere in the house.

Who would want to be living in the presence of any effluent?

DH has to walk to the next village and use their public conveniences.

I just delegate my evacuation needs to the lady's maid - I've no idea what she does with it.😉

Here it is, no screening at all Confused

@VetiverAndLavender

Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were saying there's no problem having a toilet in the bathroom as en suites smell anyway. I re-read and can see that's not what you said at all.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2021 19:18

But that's a large and very beautiful house OP except for the loo that is Shock

What the hell were they thinking of, and are they generally a little ... errr ... odd?

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 19:18

The thing with an en-suite is that it is never the only toilet in the house. So should you wish to use a different toilet you have that option. But also if you want complete privacy from other people in the house, or if you just want a bathroom that you don’t have to share, you have that too.

But I never go in the bathroom with my family members, so I always have complete privacy when I’m having a shower or using the toilet. And are you saying the en-suite is only for you? What if you have a partner? Do they have to use the “family bathroom” so that you don’t have to share?

The house itself is lovely! I’d definitely have to screen off the bathroom though😂

Brilliant!!! Grin Grin

Gorgeous house OP but, they have "pretend visitors" picture 13, so they're clearly unhinged!

But they do have a trophy cabinet - I wonder what for?
Blondeshavemorefun · 28/01/2021 19:27

Pic 17. They could easily put up a stud wall

LunaHeather · 28/01/2021 19:29

What a beautiful home!

I don't understand what they've done in that room though. Weird fetish?! Plenty of room for doors.

Purpleberet · 28/01/2021 19:30

Very weird but I also dislike the trend for baths in bedrooms and don't particularly like en suites either. I like the bathroom to be a completely separate room. In a hotel I prefer bathrooms that have the toilet in another room within the bathroom which seems to be quite common in the US.
