AIBU to think it's weird to have a toilet in your bedroom?

My neighbours have put their house on the market recently so I had a nosey online and saw that they have a toilet in the bedroom Grin. A bath, sink and loo but no screening or bifold doors for privacy.
Even if there wasn't anyone in the room while you used it it's bloody odd isn't it?
I don't get it. Have seen it quite often on escape to the country/grand designs etc...
If you have one why? Confused

Odd to not have a sliding door, or at the very least, a curtain!

Friends bought a house that had a clear, glass panel on the main, family bathroom door! As a guest, I hated it, but they never changed it so it obvioulsy didnt bother them.

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 28/01/2021 16:33

That is a bit odd to be fair. But then again I'm not a massive fan of en-suites anyway. The idea of my DP going for his morning poo so close to where I sleep makes me want to vom. And I would hate to go for a wee in the night with someone right there outside the door. I'd rather just walk across the landing....

coldsunnydays · 28/01/2021 16:33

@FamilyOfAliens

I think it’s weird to have a toilet in the bedroom even if it’s in its own enclosure. The idea of someone going to the toilet so close to where you sleep - yuk.

But I know en suites are considered the height of sophistication on here Grin

This.

My parents did this in a house we lived in once. It wasn’t totally in the bedroom but kind of boxed in on one wall without a door. So you could see the person showering or on the toilet but only really if you peered around the wall.
They had terrible issues with the plumbing and the bedroom constantly stank of shit.

katy1213 · 28/01/2021 16:34

Had this once in a hotel in Paris - in our 2* days! I just couldn't!

littlepattilou · 28/01/2021 16:34

@FreyaFromTheFens

Yeah it's a bit weird.

I really wish you would put the listing up (I guess it would be too identifying for you though...) ?

WannabeMathematician · 28/01/2021 16:34

All the houses I’ve known that are like this (three I think) had an occupant (or previous occupant) who had severe mobility issues.

littlepattilou · 28/01/2021 16:35

I mean the house listing!

rosyribbon · 28/01/2021 16:35

Theres one on Righmove in my area just now with this.
They have turned the upstairs bathroom into a small bedroom. The toilet is facing the door so from what I can work out the single bed is where the bath would have been with a screen behind it so you cant see the sink in the top corner. Toilet still in full view though!

I once worked somewhere where there were large glass panels on the cubicle doors to the toilets. They were slightly textured but you could still very clearly see all of your colleague, and enough to easily tell which colleague it was, as they sat on the toilet. I was very glad to get another job.
FreyaFromTheFens · 28/01/2021 16:35

@luxxlisbon

YABU to not show us the listing Grin
Didn't want to embarrass the owner if she's on here or someone tells her, plus not many of us live there so pretty outing! Grin

Also are the windows frosted because that would put me off as well.

ThornAmongstRoses · 28/01/2021 16:36

We have an en suite and I have it.

Toileting facilities should be kept well away from bedrooms.

It’s grim. I’ve never seen the attraction.

littlepattilou · 28/01/2021 16:36

En suites are a bit grim I agree. Maybe OK if you sleep alone, but the idea of the person you are sleeping with having a shit 3-4 feet away from you. 🤢

VetiverAndLavender · 28/01/2021 16:37

This reminds me that my childhood best friend had a sink installed in her bedroom when we were pre-teens, back in the late 80s. I think the idea was that she would use it to do her, teeth, hair, and makeup in the morning, since otherwise she'd be sharing the (small) bathroom with her older brother.

I guess it was practical for her situation, but I thought it looked kind of strange and definitely wasn't envious.

KasparKat · 28/01/2021 16:38

That's weird!

Arobase · 28/01/2021 16:38

I really can't think why anyone would want this in a shared bedroom, or even an unshared one, come to that. I quite like en suites, but I wouldn't go out of my way to look for one. Our bathroom is just across a small landing from our bedroom, and I reckon my walk to the loo from my bed is less that in would be in many big bedrooms with en suites. And it has the advantage of there being two doors between our bed and the loo to shut out any sounds, smells etc.

SnuggyBuggy · 28/01/2021 16:39

I could get behind a sink in a bedroom to be fair. Toilet and bath or shower no.

MacDuffsMuff · 28/01/2021 16:40

@FamilyOfAliens I got absolutely hammered on here a few years ago (different user name) for saying that I hated en-suites for that very reason. GrinGrin

The 'my en suite is a paradise of cleanliness and my toilet uses the tears of angels to flush' lot were aghast!

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 16:41

It’s not just the hygiene aspect I would hate with an en suite, though that’s my biggest objection.

It’s the fact that if you do get up and go to the toilet in the middle of the night, you wake up anyone who’s sleeping with you when you flush the toilet. Unless you don’t flush, which is even more grim.

NerrSnerr · 28/01/2021 16:41

I wouldn't want a toilet in my actual bedroom but I like my en-suite. I have an overactive bladder and need to get up 2-3 times at night for a wee so I like not having far to go. I'm also not worried about people pooing in the next room to me. Normal bodily function and all that.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 28/01/2021 16:43

A local ‘interior designer’ (no formal training) has done this in her own home. Loft conversion ‘master suite’ with no doors on it so not technically a bedroom or habitable room from a building regs POV (seriously? Would you want this person designing your spaces?!). Shower, basin and loo all in the same room as the bed. No doors. Loo behind a half wall but all other sanitaryware on display as part of the room and smells/steam/sound shared through the room (and hall/stairs landing thanks to lack of doors throughout). All very fashionably designed with expensive fittings and up-to-date touches but an absolute fire, privacy and practicality nightmare.

Imissmoominmama · 28/01/2021 16:43

Ha- I have an en-suite off my bedroom, with no door! You can only see the sink from the bedroom though.

partyatthepalace · 28/01/2021 16:44

I have seen baths of course tho think it’s a big weird/ try hard

Shower cubicles in bedrooms are just scuzzy

But a loo?!?!?! - that is beyond horrible.

That doesn’t surprise me.

We’re having work done on our new house and I can’t tell you how upset the plumber is that not only do we not want an en suite, we don’t want a fancy bathroom either. You can see it in his eyes that he is dying to ask, “What, not even concealed lighting?” Grin
