AIBU to think it's weird to have a toilet in your bedroom?

My neighbours have put their house on the market recently so I had a nosey online and saw that they have a toilet in the bedroom Grin. A bath, sink and loo but no screening or bifold doors for privacy.
Even if there wasn't anyone in the room while you used it it's bloody odd isn't it?
I don't get it. Have seen it quite often on escape to the country/grand designs etc...
If you have one why? Confused

I saw one on right move recently where they added an ‘en-suite’ at one end of the master bedroom, with a waist height wall to separate it from the rest of the bedroom and no door.

I think it was because otherwise they’d have blocked off the only windows in the bedroom, and they chose natural light over privacy.

It reminded me of something you’d build on the sims when you were short of money. We did not go and view.

GnomeDePlume · 28/01/2021 17:17

@PenCreed quite a lot of houses have the toilet separate from the bathroom. Seemed to be quite a common thing in late 60s house design.

Also when we lived abroad our house had the toilet in a separate room.

Quite useful when there is only one bathroom.

@FamilyOfAliens

It’s not just the hygiene aspect I would hate with an en suite, though that’s my biggest objection.

It’s the fact that if you do get up and go to the toilet in the middle of the night, you wake up anyone who’s sleeping with you when you flush the toilet. Unless you don’t flush, which is even more grim.

Not with a modern toilet and behind a door, you don’t.
Dahlietta · 28/01/2021 17:24

I can’t really get excited about en suites one way or the other, but people are aware that you don’t actually have to shit in them at all if you don’t want to, right?
As for your neighbours? Perverts.

bridgetreilly · 28/01/2021 17:24

Grim. I do quite like the idea of a lovely roll top bath on a plinth at one end of a huge bedroom, but no way do I want a toilet in there. Think of the smells!

bilbodog · 28/01/2021 17:25

All houses were built with loos separate to bathrooms from 1930s onwards. Those of you who think its grim - not as grim as the many people (mainly men and children) who do not lower the lid on the loo when flushing and all those droplets of water containing poo and wee cover everything in the bathroom!!

IrmaFayLear · 28/01/2021 17:26

I agree, SnuggyBuggy. Surely it’s imperative to have a basin next to the loo?

What if you’ve been to the loo but someone else is in the bath next door (with door locked - say you have teens rather than small dcs) - do you not wash your hands? Confused

HuntingCuns · 28/01/2021 17:28

I have known people with this set-up, but it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

I hate en suites, too. We had four bathrooms in our marital home (a renovation project), and didn't turn any of them into en suites.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 28/01/2021 17:29

I've stayed in a couple of hotels like that. I had to send DH out for a pint so I could have a shit Grin

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 28/01/2021 17:29

PenCreed

Where is it meant to be? In a cupboard?
separate toilets work well Confused

isitjustifyable · 28/01/2021 17:30

I went away heavily pregnant with my DH to a hotel (crazy bear hotel) and the toilet was in the middle of the room. It was horrific. (As was the hotel in general)

IrmaFayLear · 28/01/2021 17:31

Grin of solidarity with those who also get “toilet nightmares” ! I have a recurring dream where I need the loo and it’s all open plan and only high-up washbasins to sit on.... it must mean something!

EssentiallyDelighted · 28/01/2021 17:33

I hate ensuites too, nit just the sound of the toilet flushing but the door opening and shutting, light and fan going on and off, not for me.

I have also noticed the trend for freestanding baths in bedrooms in bigger houses than mine on Rightmove and thought I wonder how much to get it removed again, but then I hate freestanding / roll top baths wherever they are and they'd be one of the first things to go.

YouKnowItsTrue · 28/01/2021 17:34

Is it like this?

AIBU to think it's weird to have a toilet in your bedroom?
YouKnowItsTrue · 28/01/2021 17:34

Not mine in case you’re wondering!

Notcontent · 28/01/2021 17:36

I think en suites can be good when properly done - ideally where there is actually a bit of separation between the en suite and the sleeping area.

But a toilet in the actual bedroom? That’s just mad and unpleasant!

Notcontent · 28/01/2021 17:37

@YouKnowItsTrue

Is it like this?
I guess that would be handy for someone who is bedridden?? It actually looks like a hospital room...
BonnieDundee · 28/01/2021 17:38

Ugh! Dont mind an ensuite but with no partition wouldnt it smell if you got up in the night to have a shit? Just NO NO NO Shock

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 17:40

Not with a modern toilet and behind a door, you don’t.

Is it a soundproof door then?

And do modern toilets not flush? This thread is making me feel very old-fashioned Grin

safariboot · 28/01/2021 17:42

I can understand it as a disability adaptation, or as the result of incomplete renovation (eg fittings added but partition wall not yet built). But to do it intentionally for an able bodied person, yeah that seems odd.

I'm fine with a regular ensuite though. With its own opening window and door!

FamilyOfAliens · 28/01/2021 17:42

You mean like having the toilet somewhere you could call - I don’t know - a bathroom?

BarryTheKestrel · 28/01/2021 17:43

Definitely weird.

We have a sink in our bedroom and people find that weird. It's just always been there since we moved in so I've never questioned it. Great for make up and middle of the night water though!

YouKnowItsTrue · 28/01/2021 17:44

Surely a door is essential to obscure smells, noises and straining faces.

DarcyJack · 28/01/2021 17:49

For the ensuite haters- where do you think the toilet is in regard to the bed? Our ensuite is farther away from the bed than the family toilet and measured as the crow flies the downstairs loo is the closest to the bed! Ensuite all securely partitioned with a proper wall and closing door. Like the vast majority of them I would guess. Nothing to fear here. Unless you are one of those weirdos who won't do a poo if your husband is in the house.

combatbarbie · 28/01/2021 17:51

It's very in just now..... But only works with rolling countryside views I think..... I have seen some nice ones online but they are big spacious rooms. Reminds me of the crazy bear hotel rooms 😍
