AIBU to think women should not be banned from Social media for asking the question - Thread 2

Many women have been suspended from sm for asking the question:
“Do you believe that male sexed people should be allowed access to changing rooms and showers for female sexed people and teenagers?”
Seems like a perfectly reasonable question which we should be allowed to ask.

When I first became interested in this subject I posted something about supporting a third space on twitter.

I had to close my account eventually because of the number of abusive replies and DMs. Including comments such as i deserve to watch my child be raped with their girl dick, the usual rape threats against me etc. All reported to Twitter and the one regarding my daughter to the police. Nothing was done. In fact, the police officer i spoke to suggested just not giving opinions on twitter. Yes genuinely the response was keep quiet woman and dont bother us manly men with your silly womanly complaints.

So no, not just random screenshots, but actual experience.

Bloody hell. That's awful Glenthebattleostrich.

💐

Unfortunately it's becoming rather widespread.

@Nomnomarrgh

I think flat earthers are getting some unfair representation here. It is perfectly possible to believe the world is flat without forcing anyone else to agree with you, or even listen to you or change their lives in any way shape or form.
that's true.

It affects no one else, unlike this which affects more than half of the population.

And I agree Lego Friends is dreadful

I never said this. Lego friends isn't dreadful at all.
As I've pointed out before, no one give a shit about lego being almost solely targeted at boys for the best part of 20 prior to friends years, yet make a big deal out friends being 'girly' like this is unacceptable and refusing to buy it.

Winesalot · 28/01/2021 12:47

Glenthebattleostrich

What a terrible thing to happen and then to be brushed off like that by the police.

lifeturnsonadime · 28/01/2021 12:51

I think lego as a brand has changed massively in the last 20 years. It used to be more 'free building' but now it is more building models based on other brands, whether that be Harry Potter, Disney, etc. etc.

I don't think the multicoloured bricks that were around when I was a child were aimed at boys rather than girls. My daughter did some comprehension work on lego, the theme was the brand, historically the point of lego was it was aimed at both boys and girls and was a modular set so each set you got could extend the previous. This isn't the case now with the themed (branded) sets that most people buy.

lifeturnsonadime · 28/01/2021 12:53

So why don't more prominent people ask questions about this?

Why do some very intelligent people (including women) either not comment or affirm the TWAW line? Do they believe it or is it something else?

JoodyBlue · 28/01/2021 12:55

@MaudTheInvincible

Remove their specific biology from the word woman, and anyone can be one.

Sexism disappears, misogyny doesn't exist. Neither does sex specific crime.

Yes Datun, if the definition of 'woman' is changed to include some men, then the legal protections of women become worthless. We are protected in law against discrimination on the basis of our sex. That's it. That's the only protection we have.

It is de facto changing already. I have seen the word "transmisogyny" used in guidelines to employers - i.e. you have to look out for transmisogyny and report back (anonymously) on transmisogyny in the workplace. It is so convoluted as to be incomprehensible. Therein lies the link back to queer theory and a whole other can of worms. Basically, if language is confused, people don't have the tools to make an argument. It is not imminent, it is here already.

You are right. I implied wrongly that you did by saying ‘I agree’. I apologize.

I personally found the early Friends sets dreadful because they were stereotypical aimed at girls in packaging, colours and themes. They could have (and may have since) done much more with them than was available when I was buying them.

However, I did not refuse to buy them as I happened to have a child who liked some of them. And liked the other sets as well. And we purchased the generic block packs to expand the options. Like I am sure many other parents did and do.

Thewithesarehere · 28/01/2021 12:58

I do wonder if playing the same game will work. I was reported many times on a local Facebook group but the moderator didn’t take any action because all my posts were very respectful and neutral while the other side was calling names.
I think I would have been very much within my rights to report these name callers to police because they were quite threatening.
I simply didn’t think of it that way at the time as i thoughts just some silly people. Now I will take this seriously.

@lifeturnsonadime

Well the word that mustn't be named explains the rapey threats by some transwomen on twitter. I didn't understand the logic behind those at all before reading that article.

Astonishing.

We. Need. To. Talk. About. This.

@lifeturnsonadime - when this thread ends, come and visit feminist board, it is a friendly place by and large, as friendly as an anonymous online community can be. Bring your friends. Women need women to know about this and discuss it. A lot of hugely brave pioneering women have stood for this so far. It is time for more of us to get behind them. Flowers

The mainstream media and social media response to J K Rowling's excellent essay on this subject is your answer :(
lifeturnsonadime · 28/01/2021 13:06

But they just said she was transphobic, by and large, but do they really think that?

She's not saying anything different. She's talking about women's rights.

OvaHere · 28/01/2021 13:06

I don't really think there's anything wrong with Lego Friends as a product other than it maybe sometimes being a bit too pastel (they could make the same product with better colours).

The problem is the marketing and toy stores/websites having strictly designated boy/girl aisles.

My DS loved Lego Friends when he was younger and we had quite a few sets alongside all the hand me down lego. He had the LF Yacht which had many hours of play.

lifeturnsonadime · 28/01/2021 13:06

Joody i will visit the feminist board.

Angryresister · 28/01/2021 13:09

Life turns it is because there is the strange belief that trans = oldtime transsexuals getting on with their lives peacefully. Because they have one or two trans friends who would not harm anybody. Because they do not value other women’s views or experiences. Because they are frightened of saying No.

Angryresister · 28/01/2021 13:12

Zee are still waiting for the reducing no of people thinking it’s ok for women to be banned for asking questions to why.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 28/01/2021 13:12

I understand your thinking but as I said, I see so many people slating friends 'because stereotypes' yet seemingly have no issue with 'city' etc. being 'blue' and perpetuating the stereotypes that boys like cops and robbers and fire stations and spaceships and conflict.

They can't seem to see that it's the same forced stereotypes, yet only the girly one is deemed unacceptable.

Angryresister · 28/01/2021 13:12

We, of course!

Winesalot · 28/01/2021 13:16

There was a YACHT!!! That is so much better than the horse ranch, and an all girl pizza counter, and the cool girls lounging around set. I don't even recall there were any boy figures in our sets. Just all girls.

You could get boy figures too although I think they came much later after LF was first launched. I can't remember specifically if the yacht came with both.

I did have a problem with it. Absolutely. However, towards the end of my purchasing I noticed a couple of women characters were coming into the City sets. The Harry Potter kits were also only just coming in and all the Star Wars kits that were available were very male oriented to start with. I think they have a few of the female lead characters now. In fact, I started buying Lego for my daughter when there was absolutely NO Lego Friends and we stuck to generic packs because she had no interest in what was on offer early on. It did change, and I hope it has continued to change.

Anyway, enough from me about Lego.

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/01/2021 13:24

Yes city has female fire fighters etc

Most of surly just let them pick?

I never policed toy choices on any thing other than age /ability suitability.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2021 13:24

YANBU, OP. Women being banned from twitter etc for asking questions some males don't like, let alone having the temerity to want to retain women's rights, is simply rank misogyny.
