To ask what conspiracy theories you actually believe are true?

Following on from the thread where OP was looking for conspiracy theories for her kids to look at, I was wondering whether anyone actually believes any of the outlandish conspiracies.

We’ve all read about how people believe that Elvis didn’t die/Paul McCartney did die/the royals are all lizards/the earth is flat. But I’ve never encountered anyone who actually believes any of them, only people who talk about people who (apparently) believe in them.

So, what conspiracies do you actually believe and why?

Re JFK I don't think it was a conspiracy theory but I do think there was a cock up. I saw a documentary years ago that put forward the theory that he was in fact shot by one of the Secret Service agents in his protection detail - that they had heard the first shot fired by LHO (which missed) and in the panic fired back but hit JFK by mistake. I can't remember the exact details but something to do with people hearing another shot first.

But like I said, not a conspiracy just human error.

JimmyCarrsParting · 28/01/2021 11:04

Use of the term "conspiracy theory" is interesting, isn't it?

Lumps together stuff like "the Queen's a man-eating lizard" with genuine, sensible questioning of the stories we're told.

Glad to see others on here also not convinced by the 9/11 narrative (or the many - in my opinion often illogical - attempts to "debunk" people's legitimate questions).

WTC7 was the first thing I thought was strange. A third tower (incidentally where a lot of records were kept) which "pancaked" in exactly the same way as the main two, despite not having been hit by a plane at all. Left out of the first investigation. Then, when people complained, was made subject to a new investigation which concluded the collapse was basically due to burning of office furnishings. Sound odd? "It's fine", they say, "we made a computer model of how it came down". Really? Great, then make that public and let it be scrutinised... "oh no, we're not going to do that".

And that's just one part of it. Then there's the pentagon, the insider trading....

So yeah, 9/11. We were fed a load of horseshit.

I don’t think the Cipriani 5 all committed suicide. Five friends with financial dealings in Russia that went wrong all apparently kill themselves (quite publicly in some cases).

ramblingsonthego · 28/01/2021 11:06

With regards to Diana. I remember the night very well. I was pregnant with my first child and had been at a very late party and was up with indigestion most of the night. ITV had a news flash that Diana had been in a car crash and was transferred to hospital. It was at least 45 mins before it was announced she had died. The newscaster had changed into a black suit and tie to announce it. I watched it all unfold at like 3am or something. I still can remember it like yesterday.

Re those questioning the moon landings, this site is good at countering the most common arguments used by conspiracy theorists.

fakenina · 28/01/2021 11:07

I have questions about 9/11. Not saying I dont think Bin Laden did it but I do think there are strange happenings and we have not been told every thing.

CarlottaValdez · 28/01/2021 11:08

The moon landing stuff is weird but I can’t see how such a huge cover up could have been possible. Can’t we see the footprints from telescopes?

Onedropbeat · 28/01/2021 11:10

I beleive Epstein didn’t commit suicide but why has Ghislaine Maxwell not been silenced permanently yet?

She’s the one who could reveal everything now

That’s what they tell us

Not many people have a telescope strong enough to look for themselves though , convenient!

Re the TV presenter/royal wife situation

I think it's a strange coincidence (really nothing more than that) that the deceased TV presenter's fiancee is now the royal family's gynaecologist and has delivered most of the most recent royal babies.

But in all of the newspaper reporting of this fact there is never a mention that this is a strange occurrence at all. Most newspaper articles reporting this begin with the fact that he does this job now followed by a 'tangential' mention that police say they think they may never find out who killed his fiancee. This is what I think is odd.

I would expect articles to say:

  1. It's an interesting fact that her fiancee is now the royal family's gynaecologist
  2. Poor man that he lost his fiancee

But they don't

I believe that the Right have consistently planted ideas in the Left for several generations now, in order to destabilise it. Identity politics. Anti-semitism.

frumpety · 28/01/2021 11:13

I think a lot of people are quite naive. There are thousands and thousands of people who are working under the limitations of the official secrets act, as part of their job, most working in quite mundane situations. I think deliberately breaking the act is seen as rather naughty and would automatically lose you your pension as a minimum punishment.
Then you have D notices as they used to be refered to, think they have a slightly more long winded name now. The Press is of course free to ignore them and has done on occasion I believe. Or it might have been the case that the Government thought they had prepared one and hadn't ?
We don't always get to know everything about everything, sometimes there will be legitimate national security reasons for that and sometimes people have really good legal teams. And sometimes there isn't anything extraordinary to know.

medebourne · 28/01/2021 11:14

Please don't say that about Madeline McCan's parents. It's a truly terrible thing to say. They are real people, not soap opera characters and you weren't there so you don't know.

Also, MN tend to delete threads mentioning the case. And I agree with them.

I can say whatever I want to say. It's a huge case, loads of documentaries and conspiracies surrounding it, and people are entitled to an opinion on it, just like they are with Diana, Epstein, 9/11.

Around 4 years ago I went on a ferry from Estonia to Finland if they charged me for going round in circles for 2.5 hours I will be royally pissed off.Grin

MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/01/2021 11:16

WTC 7 is the major fly in the ointment, agreed.

medebourne · 28/01/2021 11:18

Of course people are entitled to opinions! You can say whatever you like. It is a free country.

However, you might want to choose not to say it on a public forum for parents because you have empathy. Also, mumsnet is a private company, they can choose whether to let people post things on here or not. They have no obligation to provide you with a forum at all.

KrisAkabusi · 28/01/2021 11:18

Viviennemary

It's over fifty years since the moon landing and nobody has bothered to go back. Why not. Maybe the cost is too high and they wouldn't learn much. But it still seems strange that despite the huge advances in technology nobody has been back."

Well, China had a mission there just last month. They brought back samples and everything. But they could do it without the massive expense and danger of sending a crew. They probably will send a manned craft within the next couple of years, but it will really only be for publicity. It is incredibly expensive for a crewed mission. The main reason no- ones been back in 50 years is how much it would cost, and Because there's not a lot new we could learn that can't be replicated with uncrewed missions.

Diana was a parent, someone's child too. Yet I don't see everyone getting up in arms over people saying they don't believe her death was an accident. Confused
Daftasabroom · 28/01/2021 11:21

@elevenplus2021 I don't think it's odd at all. I think it's a huge expense for probably very little gain. If you think the major NASA manned programmes have been, Apollo moon, Skylab, Shuttle, ISS. I cant see where another or ongoing moon programme would fit. Space is being increasingly commercialised and militarised. Most science based projects are looking at the sun, mars and various comets and asteroids.

I think they've done that all on their own.

Frump totally true about official secrets act. My brother works in a weapons site. Won't say what type. He cannot talk about his job. We know he does project management.

But he isn't even allowed to say "I'm working on a new toilet block for an office"

My son who loves all things weapons is horrified all he can say is "yeah I had a good day at work" Grin
